| Leigh Miners 36 v 24 Egremont Rangers
Leigh Miners kept their unbeaten home record intact yesterday afternoon, but only just after an unconvincing 36-24 win against a young enthusiastic Egremont side who with several players missing had Miners rattled early in the second half. It was the home side who opened the scoring five minutes into the game when prop Martin Gray went over on the right to score, Jonny Youds converting to make it 6-0. Miners increased their lead to ten points when Jonny Youds went over just short of the twenty minute mark but a determined Egremont side hit back ten minutes later with a converted try to make it 10-6 and they could have scored more points if they had taken there chances, but for better decision making or a better pass they could have found themselves in front. With the score looking like it would be 10-6 going into the half time interval Miners hit Egremont with a quick fire double just before the break, the first coming from Australian Shaun Dowie who scored in the left corner and that was quickly followed by a converted try by Jonny Youds who scored in the final set of the half to give Miners a 20-6 half time lead which was harsh on the visitors with the game being much closer than the scoreline suggested.
The opening ten to fifteen minutes of the second half was all Egremont with them scoring three converted tries to take the lead for the first time, and it was nothing more than they deserved with Miners being all over the place defensively. From the third Egremont try which made the score 24-20 Miners knew they needed to change things so made four changes before play restarted to try and stop Egremont's momentum, from the next set some good pressure on the last tackle forced Egremont into turning the ball over inside their own half and from that Miners got straight back in the game with a try in the right corner from winger Jake Waterworth, Youds converting off the touchline to edge the home side back in front at 26-24. Miners where in again soon after with a second try of the afternoon for Shaun Dowie to make it 30-24 with just over twenty minutes remaining. The final quarter was nip and tuck with the game well in the balance but thankfully for Miners they wrapped the game up in the final few minutes with a try from Ellis Grimes, Youds converting to give the final score 36-24 and leave Miners in sixth position with plenty to work on in the coming weeks after a three week break.
Miners are away next week at Bradford Dudley Hill in the second round of the Conference Challenge Trophy.
