Leigh Miners 23 v 6 Lock Lane
Leigh Miners returned to winning ways yesterday afternoon with an impressive 23-6 home victory against a high flying Lock Lane side who travelled to Twist Lane on the back of five successive victories. Miners produced arguably their best team performance of the season to date with a strong enthusiastic defensive performance backed up with a high completion rate in the wet conditions. With the game being played at a fast pace throughout it took until just short of the twenty minute mark before the first points of the game where scored, the points going the way of the home side after centre Sean MacDonald got on the end of a Tommy Parkinson break to score at the side of the posts, Jonny Youds converting to give the score 6-0. Miners scored their second try a few minutes later when full back Jonny Youds out jumped his opposite number to score under the posts, Youds converting his try to increase the score to 12-0. Scott O'Brien slotted over a drop goal right on half time to give Miners a 13 point advantage going into the break after a strong first half performance.
Miners come out strong again after the break knocking off plenty of sets and again defending strongly, snuffing out and closing down Lock Lanes attacking options to keep them at zero. Jimmy Muir scored a third home try to increase the lead to 17-0 and that was followed by a good individual try by captain Scott O'Brien who scored under the posts, Youds adding the extras to put Miners well in control of the game at 23-0. The only negative of Miners afternoon was when Lock Lane scored against the run of play after they was determined to keep their free scoring visitors who had been scoring points for fun in recent weeks scoreless, that score was as good as it got for the Castleford outfit as Miners won the game 23-6 to remain in 6th while Lock Lane dropped from 2nd to 3rd.
Miners now have a two free weekends before their next game on Saturday 28th June at home against Egremont Rangers.
