Leek Wire, do you have any connections to Warrington or did you become a fan of RL and decided to pick the Wire. If so, what were your reasons.

I am in Chester, but have worked extensively in the Far East. I was born in Warrington.

On my travels, I have influenced one or two people to start watching RL and adopt Warrington. I have also had local bars with a smattering of RL fans, these have included Widnes, St. Helens, Wigan, Wakefield and Hull F.C. The fans of most clubs including Wigan, especially abroad, seem to take the view that "It's good to be watching with a fellow fan, we're all RL fans", yet Widnes and Saints are confrontational even abroad (they really hate Warrington to the point where they'd rather mouth off than watch a game with a Wire fan).

It took me quite a while to work that one out.

Only just got that one myself and I live close by, but did live down in Minehead for a few years.

I used to to travel to home games from Swindon - 314 mile round trip to watch us lose......

I have no Warrington connections , just love the sport of Rugby League , no Rugby league in this area , Warrington is only 40 miles from here , the greatest sport in the World as far as I am concerned .

I am hoping by June we can be back watching Rugby League again , August at the latest .

Travel from High Wycombe roughly about 7-8 games a season, no links to Warrington fell in love with Rugby League in 95 been supporting Wire since then.

Great commitment!

Especially when you have top flight RU teams like Saracens and Northampton (comparatively) on your doorstep.

Been to loads of Wycombe Wanderers games - like the ground and set up there. Reminds me more of a rugby league ground - family atmosphere.

We try to do Wire Friday night games when Wycombe are playing up north, stay in Warrington the night for the fantastic pubs you have then onto the Wycombe game on the Saturday afternoon.
Once did Hull away on the Friday night then traveled across country to watch Wycombe in Morecambe, stayed in Blackpool till Monday then traveled home. Love it when we make the Challenge Cup Final seeing my home town full of primrose & blue as it’s only a few train stops from Wembley.

Where are those then mate?



I was brought up in Warrington and have been going back for years, and even I don't think we have (many) decent pubs - especially not in the town centre.

First off the price of a pint is a lot cheaper

We love The Lower Angel the real ale selection is good, proper old school boozer and also 9Gallon. The Looking Glass then onto The Kings Head before the match you can’t go wrong.

It's been a tough gig running a pub over the past thirty years, before the lockdowns. Haven't been in the Angel for a while, but I use to enjoy a bit of banter with Charlie, who was a decent sort for a Chemic.

I'm a big fan of the Lower Angel and pre-pandemic used to be in there once a week (usually Wednesdays) and alternative Saturdays. As you say, a proper traditional boozer.

The pubs on matchday are great, and I used to like The Royal Oak Branch near Wilderspool too.

I don't think the pubs are up to much normally. As someone a bit older now, I don't like the atmosphere in Warrington town centre on a 'normal' weekend night, there is an undercurrent of violence waiting to happen and has been for as long as I can remember.

Too many young 'uns who've drunk way too much. Manchester and Liverpool seem more civilised for a night out because there's a lot more around who are older, and better policed mostly.
