Thank goodness for that.
Conservative leader David Cameron is the new UK prime minister after the resignation of Gordon Brown.
Mr Cameron, 43, entered 10 Downing Street after travelling to Buckingham Palace to formally accept the Queen's request to form the next government.
He said he aimed to form a "proper and full coalition" with the Lib Dems to provide "strong, stable government".

Who'd have imagined that just 6 weeks ago....The Tories seemingly cruising to a landslide, now having to go in side by side with those woolly Liberals.
I think an appropriate result to what politics has served up in the last year or so...Basically, a rejection of all on offer.
I can only hope, that despite my dislike of the Tories, this new administration can at least bring some respect into what has become a shabby and much disliked parliament.

| The problem for Cameron is he has been spit roasted between his own backbenchers and Nick Clegg.
His position as leader had become untenable in the outcome that he didn't become PM at the end of this. For all the complaints the Tory parliamentary party would have had about a 'coalition of losers', they are angry that they managed to blow the 'unlosable' election. It's the cricketing equivalent of having the other team needing 400 to win on the last day, with 3 wickets standing....and ending up being a draw. Cameron's head would have been demanded by the parliamentary party.
Cameron didn't want to offer Clegg concessions on a referendum on the AV system or have to sacrifice spots in the Cabinet for Lib Dems, or give up key pledges like marriage tax, inheritance tax or whatever, but by keeping the Labour ball in play Clegg has managed to panic Cameron into thinking he was going to lose his position, and looks like he's been able to overplay his hand and dictate terms.
Cameron looked stressed and drained making his speech, certainly wasn't the usual relaxed Cameron.

No, they weren't.
BNP's great chance was this election - disillusionment with the political system, immigration supposedly such a big issue. The British rejected them. Excellent.

NSDAP does not equal Socialist. I am not even sure why I'm arguing on this with you.
The BNP lost countless Council seats and were obliterated where they put all their resources. I haven't studied numbers of candidates which may explain the rise in the share of the vote. Maybe people decided to vote Tory rather than BNP as they knew they'd get a cap.

| Osborne will be Chancellor, despite that not being popular with the Lib Dems, or even the Tory backbenches. Clegg will be deputy PM, Hague Foreign Secretary, Cable Chief Secretary to the Treasury, David Laws Schools secretary.
Other than that I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Huhne gets Home Secretary. Simon Hughes might be the 'big name' from the Lib Dems who misses out, or is given a compensation job - too far to the left, and too much of an individual to be handled safely by the Tories.

No the SPD were the socialists in Germany. The Nazis were the ones who ran on a platform of curbing the power of trade unions and providing support for business interests, hence they were backed by big business and also the traditional conservative groups. They had a broad electoral support from the far-right and centre-right, but not from the left which was either SPD or KPD (Communists)

Clarke BIS? or will BIS go and we return to Education and Business/Trade departments?
Presumably they'll be true to their word on cutting the number of ministerial posts.... won't they?

| Cameron will be in power for as long as it takes labour to elect a new (publically acceptable) leader. Then the Lib-demo will tell Cameron "referendum or we pull the plug", Cameron will agree, his backbenchers will say "no way", Cameron will agree and then we will have another election with the public thinking....." that was close", and Conservatives will come 3rd in the vote.

| Well the chat on the political grapevine today was that the Lib Dems tried to push for Osborne to be replaced in the real Cabinet not by Cable, but by Clarke, which put Cameron in a difficult situation, because lots of Tories prefer Clarke as well, but seeing as Cameron is going to be having some disappointed Shadow Cabinet members who missed out on a post due to Lib Dems getting their jobs, sulking on the backbenches, he couldn't risk having Osborne as a big-beast figure around which they could focus a faction.

Not a chance....The Lib Dems are now consigned to a distant 3rd place forever after this deal with the Tories.
It is actually a godsend for the Labour Party, who will now recover all those disillusioned voters who voted for the Lib Dems and now who will feel soiled that they have actually helped to install a Tory administration.
As long as Labour get the right leader ( maybe 1 of the Millibannds, but definitely not Balls), and conduct a dignified, but effective opposition to the coalition, then they may even get back into government at the first attempt.
The Lib Dems should enjoy their moment in the sun, as from now on they can look forward to a regular thrashing in the polls, as people realise that British politics is truly a 2 horse race, and that a vote for Clegg's lot is no different to placing your X next to the Conservatives or the Labour party.

| I can't understand the Lib Dem supporters who are angry at this ?
They voted for the Lib Dems because they wanted the Lib Dems in power and guess what, they are in power.
It will be a good balance for most, right wing and left wing compromising and meeting in the middle.
If the government do a good job i can see it benefiting the liberals but only if they do a good job.
People might think "hey they haven't done too bad lets vote for them solely" you never know with people.

It is the floating voters that they have alienated, who will not be able to tell the difference between them and the Tories....These people will simply fall into the Tory or Labour camp, seeing the Lib Dems as simply a puppet for the largest party.
Make no mistake, any success this coalition has will be credited to Cameron, especially by the Pro-Tory media.
