| Must admit I can't ever remember Atkins and King 'swapping' between wing and centre. King was always outside Atkins to my knowledge.
And Wilde starting at second row in some people's starting 17's for next season? Got to be doing better than that for me, much better. Still a long way off a starting spot on a regular basis even considering Currie's long term injury.

| Quote ="Liver bird"Why is Evans limited at centre ? If Warrington more often than not attack to the left, it's going to be hard for him to score playing on the opposite side. He reads the game very well and puts in big defensive efforts. Games are won on defence.'"
We probably attack more to the left as we have a centre there who can actually threaten opponents with offensive running. Evans would not get in Hull's, Saint's, Leed's or Wigan's side and is not good enough for ours either if we want to be a number 1 side. 4 tries all season is a dismal return.

| The structured attack is to the left and nothing to do with your throw away comment about threatening the line.
You need the ball to score

| Evans at fullback? Do some of you actually watch the games?
He has no rugby brain whatsoever, he has terrible footwork, he cannot beat a man and he doesn't know when to pass and when not to pass... he doesn't know how to run a line.
He is the worst attacking centre in SL and that's saying something, but people think he is a viable fullback option?
Crazy.

| In all the time R Evans has played at the Wire I have tried to find a redeeming factor about his play and apart from some improved defence I cant say that I have found any. No pace, no decision making, can't see a pass and always get caught with the ball under the wrong arm for an off load.
For me move Ratch to centre Russell to FB and Penny to wing and we have a better more attacking back line.

He did and was very effective, I watched him play there. He wasn't even in the Wire team then.

I don't have any personal issue with him, it's just when we are attacking down his side he doesn't break the line, he doesn't commit a man and pass to his winger. He does seem to use an arcing run which just narrows down the space for his winger to the point where he can't pass to the winger or he will end up in touch.
I accept I'm not an expert but I'm calling it as I see it.

He got sufficient ball on Saturday. Whenever he does get it you just know nothing is going to happen to threaten the defence, and it doesn't. Anyway it's just my opinion that this position can be improved upon. If you disagree - fine - it's what makes the world go around.

| Interesting comment from Evans in the Warrington Guardian "We have got a few signings coming in and the core of our squad is staying on so we know we have got the potential to improve. Sorry if this is posted elsewhere but thought relevant to title of this post.

As I mentioned it I will respond, yes I do actually watch the game perhaps not the same game as you Ron and I've seen him do alright at FB for us, all be it on a limited number of games. Whether it's ideal or not is another matter, note it wasn't my first thought I actually stated IF we had a FB....... but it most certainly a viable option based on the current playing roster IMO especially if folk prefer Ratchford elsewhere which is why I posted, although I concede that the title of the thread is NEXT years 17
It's not crazy to choose a FB that can tackle and catch a ball, I'm sorry if you disagree but it's not as crazy as putting Russell back there as we would be kicked to death.

A valid point. However as the discussions and opinions of this forum will have no effect whatsoever on who the club buys or selects maybe all we can do is fully support the team especially during the playing season.

But isn't that the point of a forum, I don't for one minute want or expect the Club to take any notice of my opinion. I want to join in a discussion with fellow fans about the club I support. I know there will be alternative views, and respect those even if I don't agree with them.

It's not a question of blind loyalty. I am all for constructive discussion, however some of the posts are nothing short of character assassination

| Agree with most peoples assessment of R Evans good in defence poor in attack
Curve ball that's not be mentioned - would he make a good second rower?
Following the move both Westwood and Hughes have made - at least until Currie returns

Lineham
Ratchford
Atkins
Russell ( or Solamona )

| i thought we were short in the back row at the start of this year, despite signing westerman and hughes, we were still missing harrison, laithwaite and bevans, and westwood had been moved to replacement prop, despite the 13 on his shirt. so one injury we were straight into the kids.

| Well, Rhys to second row is a new one. Quite how a player who can't bust a tackle in the centres is going to cope in the maelstrom of the pack is an interesting one. I don't know how Joe Philbin would feel if we whipped out the shoehorn again and prised either Evans or Atkins into the second row, but pretty hacked off probably covers it.
Please, [iplease [/i let's have the players in the right positions. Putting you on the wing doesn't make you a winger, any more than popping a skullcap on your head makes you a prop. If messrs Russell, Atkins & Evans are not going to excel any longer in their natural positions (FB and centre respecitively) then they become squad players or move on.
Gidley and Ratchford are exceptions as they have been utility players for most of their career, and are capable of outstanding performances in many positions, but putting players in positions they are not suited to, comfortable with, naturally gifted at or have the physical and mental prowess to adapt to, does them, and the team, a massive disservice.

| The "shoe horning" of players would be one area of concern for me over our coach. He seems to have "go to" players that he trusts not to let him down and will therefore play them out of position to keep them in the team. Without question there have been times where an out and out winger would've scored where a makeshift winger hasn't.
I think the Catalan game showed how a team with speed on the wing can be transformed.

I agree Evans is no Currie or Bateman who can side step and then power thru a defensive line - but neither is Hughes or most of the other 2nd rowers in the Superleague (which is why Currie & Bateman are the stand out 2nd rowers in Superleague)
Evans is a solid defender with a good first contact tackle who makes decent yards when carrying the ball - very much in the young Westwood mould. Its quite obvious he isn't a natural centre so the options available are Squad player (dual reg) keep him where he played in 2016 get rid or utilise him in a new position at least until Currie is available

| Evans isn't a solid defender though, a few good reads earlier in the season seem to have clouded people's judgement. He's a decent superleague player and after wing (if penny is to be forgotten) then right centre is the easiest position for us to improve on.
