| I believe Basil is a top coach now, a cult hero at Wire.
Mateaki Mafi was fast but couldn't catch a ball for toffee,
I once went to a party at mateaki's and Richard Henare's flat. On top of the TV was a photo of Mafi and Linford Christie racing each other at the Barcelona Olympics and Henare was skinning up all night.

i can't believe that open ended statement worked. LOL
i asked cull, whether the club, or other clubs were concerned and trying to complain about jason hooper and his shoulder charging tery on kickers, as he was hurting people(and ended up having to retire having ed his shoulder).
Cull's reply was," we need to get our own house in order first, we've got a player that pushes others into advertising hoardings"
he then came out with the pearler of
"people in greenhouses, shouldn't thrown stones"
pure cull that.

doesnt that make him a great signing then if he was able to forge a good career despite being only average.
John Thursfield was a less than average hooker he was at warrington as a player for almost ten seasons for only two season was he first choice hooker the rest of his wire career was played out quite rightly in the reserves. oh aye he scored one try.......!
John Clarke was never that bad or showed that much lack of ambition.
get a grip understand what a bad hooker actually is before talking cack, and respect a bloke that got us to wembley by playing a blinder in the 2009 semi but missed out on the final due to the injury sustained in that semi.......
anyway with that rant over why are people listing Kevin Walters he came over here with three boys not long after his wife died of Cancer and couldnt Settle I'd say thats fair feckin do's.
Worst signing was that lad off Gladiators Neil Parsley...I mean if ever a barrell was being scraped that was it.....jesus they put him in the same team as Alan Langer.

| Here is one the older posters will remember, from the days when the game was in black & white...John Tembey, signed from Saints for £5000 which was a lot at the time ,a prop who broke his arm or leg soon after starting his Wire career , came back ,quickly broke his other arm or leg & had to retire .He didn't do much for the time he actually played.

Hells teeth 9, you are really going back there. It was 1964 or 5 ?, and you are right he came and went in the same year certainly. He must have passed away at least 10 yrs ago now.

Always thought that if Basil Millward had had a go with Parsley he would have looked alright. We probably didn't give him enough thyme to settle down.

Not having that one mate. Not the most loyal bloke to wear the P&B can't fall into this catagory.
He was a good distributor with a great kicking game. Came back to Wilderspool and left with wins for Saints and Fax more times than I would like to remember.

Don't know how much we paid for him, but he hasn't played ONE game yet.
And I don't know who he is trying to fool by running on the pitch at the end of the game and shaking everybodies hand as though he has done the full 80 -- he still has his suit on.

Can just about remember him. Nine Arches and Winslades, can you remember us selling Jack Melling to Wigan just before the Murphy era and getting Colin Standing (a Welsh second row), and cash in return? He played half a game at Leeds and then promptly retired and was never seen again. 1969-70 I think, that awful year just before Ossie Davies stepped in.

Sorry but I always disliked Bishop, especially when he went back to Australia leaving us with no scrum half against Wigan at Maine Road
There have been many players who were not quite up to it, people always bang on about Dallas Meade but he got a career ending injury after a few minutes of his first game.
In recent times I would go with Sullivan although I think Cullen takes the blame for that.
For oldies like me Tony Waller is another one

Bishop was a legend. If only for his 5 drop goals against Wigan.

I remember the name but not much else I am afraid. I certainly remember Melling.
Those were depressing days in the main. We 'travelled in hope rather than expectation' as they say.

He was a very good centre who represented Lancs and GB U24's. Unfortunately injuries got the better of him.
Anyway back to the rubbish who've played for us. Anyone mentioned the great Leon Felton?

Vaguely remember Standing ; Melling was a hero as was Tommy Conroy.
About that time we also bought Norman Cherrington from Wigan in the twilight of his career & he was a shadow of what he had been. Dave Cotton didn't do much either !
