I have to admit its a strange one given that Chris Hicks is a right winger and we now have a specialist full back in Richie Mathers so moving Hicks to full back to accomodate Brian Carney isn`t really an option given how well Richie Mathers has being playing overall, its something that could send out the wrong message to the liks of Chris Riley and any other young player so you have to be careful.

I`d prefer to go with Tony Smith`s judgement as so far he he`s working miracles with a squad that didn`t look interested not so long ago, its hard to offer a solid opinion without knowing how much he is being paid, whether its a pay per play contract and what role he has come to do. Brian Carney is a great motivator so maybe Tony Smith feels the money is worth investing in that side of him.

Presumably this came about via our link with Munster and Paul Derbyshire?

its not a bad deal imo the knowledge he can pass on to the younger lads we help them immensly just think he could turn Pennny into the finished article

I'm going to trust Smith on this one, I thought he was all about the youngsters at Leeds.

It makes no difference which wing a winger plays on, certainly not a GB international who has more than handled himself in the NRL.

The way I see it is we've signed a very experienced player who has proven his ability time and time again until the end of the season.

Carney = good mentor/coach for Riley/Penny and other young speedsters at the club? as well as being a solid option in the back line if fit.

It's not like TS has brought in Carney and stated that he's going to walk straight into the side.....As a few people have pointed out, it's a no-brainer.

We have signed, on a short-term deal, a proven winger, to replace the gap in the squad left by Penny's loan deal to Widnes....What's the fuss??

It's win-win for Wire....we get cover in the squad, Penny gets valuable game-time at Widnes, and at season's end, unless Carney does something miraculous, we go back to how it was, only hopefully with a more confident Penny, in preparation for next year.

Personally, I'll be very surprised if Carney makes more than half a dozen appearances, as he is simply cover for the wing posisions.

P.S....Can we now presume Penny's loan will be extended?

I joked about this in the gossip forum when i saw him on boots an all i think i must be seeing the future

if all goes well i can see carney onboard for 2010 as well.

So now you now why, out of nowhere, he started appearing on Boots and All again

I remember the try well my mate had just said buying dessie was a waste of money and then he lit up the snookers touchline like a beauty...

but Dessie was 29 when we signed him he was a then current International, an out and out Athlete, and a top grade player, albeit in dispute with Leigh and unable to train with them...
which is why he was out in the streets running to keep fit when Tony Barrow spotted him.

Carney's weeks away from being 33 and has hardly been called a supreme athlete throughout his career.....

but I suppose if my fears are confirmed and he's an old crock he wont play so who cares.. he'll do a good job keeping Paul Johnson company....

I can't wait to see carney play again. On this basis (general increased interest in wire, not mine specifically) has got to be good if you've not paid loads, he's not stopping another decent player develop etc.

Good luck, its great to see a competitive interesting wire - got to be good for GB / England and SL.

At this moment in our season , we don't really need Carney. But he's there for cover etc. which is a good thing i suppose. I wouldnt play him ahead of Hicks and King though
