If you were to talk to someone that had no knowledge of RL to say we were Champions of the Challenge Cup, they wouldn't know what the Challenge Cup is, although the Cup element of the name might stick in mind.
I could come up with a million examples of people referring to "Champions" in a cup competition, do i [ireally[/i need to do that?
I doubt anyone is trying to pass off as Super League champions, they're just enjoying the fact we have won a significant competion in sport, and so should you.
And again

2. One that is clearly superior or has the attributes of a winner: a champion at teaching.
3. An ardent defender or supporter of a cause or another person: a champion of the homeless.
4. One who fights; a warrior.'"
Im not disputing the dictionary definition Im disputing the context. Its a subjective issue but below sums it up for me. Its also a trivial matter but I still find it an interesting argument because I personally have never seen or heard cup wiiners referred to as as "champions" or "champions of the cup." The latter hardly roles off the tongue does it?
Well leave it at that.

So who do we regard as the bigger Champions....Leeds for their three Super League titles in a row, or Saints for their feat in being Challenge Cup champions three times in a row as well as minor premiership champions three times in a row.
I would say you have to give it to Saints to be double champions so often. World Class: "that's why they're champions".

check the roll of honour of winners i cant find National League one teams winning it just mainly the top sides like Saints Bradford Wigan leeds etc....

Just, a small point(it has been said) but, if Leeds are minor league champions by being league leaders, and then SL champions by winning a knock-out competition, wouldn't the winners of the CC knock-out competition be deemed CC champions?

'" No I am proud we won it but so many on here are portraying us a all conquering hero's and we were a below average team all season bar the cup and the luck of the draw mean't we didn't play the big 2 , the real champions are Leeds , we were challenge cup winners if given the option of having what we won or what Leeds did over the whole season I would opt for what Leeds did over our achievement our SL season was a disaster , but can't wait for next year and 2 ball playing half-backs is just what the Dr ordered anything less than winning is failure imo on both fronts cup and league ! |
