| Paul Noone is one for me.
He was hailed as our new Paul Sculthorpe and our future Captain.
Unfortunately for us and Paul none of this materialised.

Good call, I always compared Noone and Woody, not position wise but players coming through at around the same time. Noone appeared to have the skill and flare to make it whilst Woody was just a hard running no nonsence forward. At that time I would have said Noone would have made it while hard running forwards were easier to come by. Well how Woody has matured and his game has improved especially under TS. Well done Woody. Sadly wasn't to be for Nooney.

I remember reading possibly in a progamme or a copy of the Warrington Guardian that Alfie Langer rated him as the best forward at the club mentioning in particular his running off the ball and his ability to find gaps.
It always stuck in my mind that piece especially as knott had already begun to recieve stick from the terraces before Langer came.
anyway has anyone mentioned Graham Appo......

| Recently....Vinnie Anderson maybe??.....Started well enough but got to the point last season where some on here were finding a club for him - Not many were discussing the chances of a new deal for him ....
Pre- Super League....Rocky Turner??....The Great White Hope at the end of the 80's, he was apparently John Woods and Andy Gregory rolled into one, and when he teamed up with Mackey in Autumn '89 and we were top of the league and waltzed to a Lancashire Cup triumph, things looked good for him.....However, Mackey left for Hull and Rocky's career never recovered....Even when Johnson tried him again with Mackey on the Aussie's return in '92, things never got going again for him, and God only knows what became of him.

| Matt 'The Rocket' Rodwell?
Danny Halliwell - Came in, in many ways saved us from Relegation. Is he even still playing?
Dean Gaskell - Dare I say anymore, just look who he plays for now.
Others that come to mind. Paul Marquet, Tommy O'Reilly, Danny Lima, Varkulis, Wilshere and Cardiss.

| I really liked the guy, but Lee Penny could have been a real good player. Had all the attributes early on and shone in his early days, just to fade into mediocracy. Jon Roper was the same. Another one worth a mention would be Ian Sibbit, who at times seemed unplayable in his early years in the centres, big strong and quick. Then 12 months in Australia turned him into a snail pace turnstile.
Pre-Smith I would have been saying similar things about Chris Bridge but thankfully he seems to have found a role and settled into it very well

| Jamie Durbin, John Duffy both were hyped up ALOT if I remember correctly both failed to deliver although I think in Duffy's case a broken leg does seem to hinder your development a little bit.

That would be very rude and might upset them. Far better to discuss it here.
Anyway, I'm sure most of them would admit their failings. I was crap at Rugby League; too timid. See, it's easy.
I always hoped that Dean Gaskell would become a superstar try scoring winger. All he managed was the winger part, and even that was a struggle.

| Three players previously mentioned
Martin Gleeson
No, sorry. Never got worse for me. Still the most talented out and out centre I've seen in the P&B
Kelly Shelford
I can see the issue, but that maybe due to the players around him.
Mark Roberts
Never in the life of man. This man was 100% in commitment, skill and allround play, every time he took the field
I think he played twice after his injury in '89 so you can't really say he declined
To use a football comparison (and those who'd remember him), Man City's Paul Lake. Had the world infront of him, destined for great things, then a career wrecking injury. Tried to comeback, but retired within a couple of years. Such a shame.

I love this particular argument..
You wouldnt say it to there face....
If I was disheartened enough with a player to write it on here.. Yes I would say it to his face..

Come on lefty I'm one of Gleesons biggest fans but even I would admit Gleeson peaked in his first season. I am not saying he was bad after that, just that he didn't keep up the same standard. 2005 was the best year of his career and the impact he had on us that year was massive, for the first time in a decade we actually felt like contenders, we had not gone on a winning run like that for ages. Then in a friendly before the start of the next season he scored 5 against Salford and everybody was in awe saying this is one of the best centres in the world. After that, he was good rather than great.
Kelly Shelford - for me one of the biggest declines. Compare his form 1994 to 1997, even though there was a decline in players around him, his ability to influence a game just disappeared. In 1994 he was one of the cleverest players in the game but he just became zero influence by 1997. I remember him getting a LOT of stick from the terraces back then, but after he retired he passed back into the memory as a popular player because of his earlier spell.
As an aside I remember Paul Lake but I thought he was overhyped, he was probably ability wise about level with Stephen Ireland or Joey Barton, ie good enough to be an international, but the City fans used to talk about him like he was in Gascoigne class before his injury...

| Ian Sibbitt, he declined pretty badly.
He looked a decent prospect, was never the same player when he came back from Melbourne. I knew he was messed about a bit with his position, christ we played him on the wing on occasion, but he really did go downhill.
I'm not sure how fair it is, I'd also Rob Parker declined with us. He was never fantastic to begin with, but all the good things out of his game seemed to disappear, all you got left with was a decent work ethic and a funny bloke.
