You wouldn't think so on here. 'Myler can't play like Briers,' Atkins is poor,' 'Smith out, discuss,' aqnd the best one of all, 'Day coach trip to Catalans,'
I notice that the composer of the'Smith out' thread didn't have an opinion himself.

That's because they're incapable of thought, that, and they'd dribbled mashed banana all over their keyboard

| back on thread, now
Some of our late 20's plus fans, may remember the Andy Currier debacle from the mid 90's
He'd left Widnes, and signed for Fev in a mega-money deal, and got injured within minutes of making his debut
After his long layoff, the rumour mill kicked in, and we were linked with him
Cue a load of letters to the Guardian from fans, saying we DON'T want Currier under ANY circumstances (I think there were even chants from the Fletcher end)...then Peter Higham came out and said "we won't be dictated to by fans".......Higham signed him, and look how he turned out. Is there mileage in this one Sal?
Can you imagine Sally at the dentist
"Will you take your tongue out of your cheek, Mr Cinnamon, I can't see your teeth"

| I think we should... we're quite obviously the most knowledgeable fans in the league.
I don't think any other set of fans would have picked up on Clarke's decline as quickly as we have.

The Fletcher St end knew Clarke was in decline back in 2002, shortly before they picked up on Westwood not being as good for us as he had been for Wakey.

| With Appo it wasn't so much of Wire fans deciding he was crap before his debut, it was Plange signing him mid season, him being on the bench for a couple of games and being blatantly out of shape and then being dropped, so the fans decided he was no good on the evidence of seeing a couple of half hearted cameos off the bench. Then when Cullen took over he put him in the starting line up and he looked dangerous so the fans started to like him.
Talking of Appo....he was one of the first signings Tony Smith made as a head coach.

| I think that we should also vote in the board of Directors. And negotiate the players' contracts. And choose the catering companies. Oh and the price of the food and drink at the kiosks.

| Hopefully, RL Manager becomes a hit before we resort to asking neanderthals and their siblings to vote on anything remotely challenging or thoughtful. It would probably result in us having a team of Rylands lads, as local talent is infinitely more passionate and committed.
However, the biggest problem with this would be the end of what is, arguably, the most belting aspect of being a Wire fan; the rumour mill.

At least they weren't boo'ed on debut. Currier's name got boo'ed when it was announced pre match!

To be fair, Tommy O'Reilly was crap. He'd played for Bramley (rather badly) the season before he signed for us. That was the time of playing our fullback (Lee Penny) on the wing, our stand-off (Lee Briers) at fullback and O'Reilly at stand-off. Then to cap it all we signed Leon Felton. Bad days.

I actually remember a brief time when Tommy O'Reilly attained cult status, I think it was just around the time Cullen took over. I definitely remember Tommy O'Reilly chants at a game at the Shay.
Felton just looked like a student RL player playing in SL, it was one of Millward's bizarre ideas to bring him over to England and we probably picked him up because he'd had a trial at Saints. He was not big enough and obviously out of his depth even if he had decent speed.
Talking of 2002, if the fans were picking the team then, first name on the team sheet would have been Danny Halliwell. A great example of how 'fan power' when it comes to organising fund raising to sign a player, is a load of rubbish.

| Wainwright wasn't a scapegoat all the time. Most of his time here from what I remember, he was quite popular with the fans especially in his second spell. In about 1998-99, he seemed to lose confidence, and DVDV seemed to lose confidence in him, and he became one for knock-ons, and got a bit of heat from the crowd. Then he went to Salford and it was a bit out of order seeing Wire fans chanting abuse at a local lad before the match when we played them (although once the game started, Salford usually started beating us, and Bobby Goulding managed to draw all the Wire fans anger his way, with his belly wobbling, middle finger raising antics). When Cullen signed Wainwright back, he was an improved player second time round, and was pretty good for us from about 2003-05, and pretty well respected by the fans. I think most of those who had given him stick before had realised that he had been better than what followed him during the years he was at Salford, and respected the fact that he had improved and was underrated.
I reckon Clarke has had more abuse over the years than Wainwright did, despite him being a good player for us over most of that time.
