| Maybe it's for the best.
Lee's influence in the last few weeks hasn't been to his usual level (see also Morley and Carvell). As he gets older, his injuries are taking longer to shake off.
It's a tough thing to say, but there's no room for "passengers" in the modern game.
Maybe the time's right for Lee to drop a division, go to a club as a player/coach, learn his new trade, and come back in a few years, when Smith needs another challenge.
If he goes, I hope he gets the recognition he deserves. TOP MAN, BRIERS.
Time then for O'Brien (who played well last night) to step up and get Ratchford and Myler worrying for their places.

| Should we loose Briers along with Carvell & Morley this should free up some cash for a decent player or two to compliment what we already have. Interesting times.

| We've all known for two or three years that several of our top players were coming to the end of their careers at the same time. The interesting thing was always going to be whether they all went at the same time, or if the process could be phased over two, maybe three, seasons. Either way, I have full confidence in Tony Smith's cunning plans, and the form of Ratchford this season has already softened the blow of Briers' eventual departure. Assuming Ratchford stays, that is!

| Wigan have just parted company with a half back coach in Sean Long.
Perhaps he was at Saints at the invitation of the Wigan club.
If Briers joined Wigan he could then develop his club coaching along with coaching the Wales contingent, Harris as coach, Briers asst coach, Dudson, Flower etc as players.
Seems a good fit really!

| Can't even imagine Wire without Briers! Don't think he would play for another team in Super league. However if its in a coaching role it would be good for him to begin his coaching career somewhere else.

| What makes everyone think he's going to be a great coach? He may well be, and good luck to him, but great players aren't always, and I don't want him coaching at Warrington unless he is.
If he goes and earns his stripes elsewhere then returns in future after proving his worth then great, but the last thing we need is another "jobs for the boys" culture starting up with players/ex-players being appointed to coaching roles based on sentiment.

Neither do I. I was referring to comments earlier in this thread from people wanting him to get a coaching job here.
I'm pretty sure Smith will expect him to go elsewhere and earn one first, and rightly so.

He is still a St Helens lad and he will support us when he retires, not the Wire. He was fist pumping and roaring T-Mak on when he made the break down Wigan's right.

| New Wolves’ deal for Briers
Warrington Wolves are delighted to announce that half-back Lee Briers has agreed a one-year contract extension with the club for 2014.
Lee said: “I am really over the moon to have signed an extra year at Warrington. After a horrible start to the season with a neck injury I am delighted that the club has given me this opportunity to finish my career here and also further my career in youth development coaching. Even though I had offers from other clubs there was only one place I was going to sign. The fans here are second to none.”

| Glad to keep him, it'd be very sad to see him play for another club, so it's good to have one of the old guard sticking around for another year.

| Surely Mr Briers wasn't hinting at leaving as leverage to gain another year at the HJ ?

So was I. In fact, I could hear most of Warrington roaring him on, and I live about 170 miles away.

It was a bit late in the day to start doing that though. He signed the next day.

We were all jumping up and down at that very moment. Are you going to support your home town team when you retire?

| Am but disappointed really. I was wishing we were going to sign a new half back. Rather looking to the rumor mill going into overdrive. And reading about which potential signings were spotted where.
