Legend is a colloquial phrase used by fans, and everyone has a different standard. There isn't an objective criteria that can be defined.

Take these ex Warrington wingers for example, all had fine careers.

Which of those would be most likely to be described as a legend?
Are there hard criteria that we could use to judge? Is it who was the most prolific try scorer? Who won the most trophies? Or is it down to intangible characteristics: who animated the crowd the most, who had the biggest personality, who epitomised qualities that fans want to see in a Wire player?

Also how important is length of service? Who is more of a legend, Jonathan Davies or Ben Westwood?

Be careful not to mistake the People's Front of Judea with the Popular People's Front, or even worse, the Judean People's Front. Many a hero has been mocked or slapped with a large fish for associating the PFJ with these lesser organizations.

Its all down to personal opinion ...and my opinion is just as valid as the next fan. If you think he is worthy of Legend status I don't have a problem with that at all. I don't agree...but thats fine. I never saw Bevan play....but I know he is a legend. I never met King Arthur...but I know of his legend. I saw Nat Wood play his heart out in a bang average team....enjoyed watching him play and his antics as a joker. Never once came away from watching him play thinking...Jeez thats one of the best players ever to pull on the Primrose and Blue. I did feel that watching Lee Briers, Jiffy and Boyd. But thats just me. To earn legendary status as a sports star (IMO) you have to perform consistently well at the top of the sport, over a sustained, long period of time and win honours. Ben Westwood....legend...in my opinion.

The Davies Westwood is interesting question, jiffy is a rugby league legend Westwood is a club legend. Would be the way I would differentiate between the two.

Nat Wood is the best player from DH for Wire in my 19 years as a fan. It helps that he was playing in a period where RL was actually entertaining, and teams were throwing the ball around more. I'm convinced an 'average' team from the mid 2000's would beat any of the previous 4 or 5 GF winners. I left Old Trafford last October wondering how such a poor Wigan side were leaving Manchester as champions, again. It was a dour game

To put this thread in context, Westwood and Nat Wood joined from Wakefield on the same day back in 2002. While Nat Wood feels like a distant but fond memory, Westwood is still playing! In terms of longevity and consistency there must be few that can match him. Briers and Paul Wood being the only ones in the recent era.

Completely agree, the mid 2000s was the peak era for SL in terms of quality, especially the years from around 2003 to 2005, when Bradford were still at their peak, Saints were packed with world class players, Leeds were fast emerging as the new force, Hull were a strong side back then too. I also think Raper or Mike Gregory's Wigan could have beaten the current Wigan, despite the fact that they were a bit off the pace of the other top teams (and went in to free fall after Farrell left).

We have started this season well and everyone is hopeful that we are contenders, but if we transported this team back to 2003-05, I think we'd be competing for 4th/5th.

I have to ask do you think nat wood was better than Michael Monaghan from dummy half? As i believe the loss of MM has hindered us more than LB, the man was unbelievably clever as a rugby player....ten fold on Nat Wood. We as a club ate trying to raise the standard of SL - be thankful for such a brilliant board.

To be fair, you may be right about M Monaghan, but i was a regular home and away in Nat's day, as i got older i missed lots of games due to work and the like, so i saw Nat Wood play a lot more

The difference with Monaghan's departure was we signed Daryl Clark to replace him, neither Nat Wood nor Briers were ever properly replaced.

As an adult watching our great club only one man for me crosses into Legend status and that is Mike Gregory. We have had some great players but not legends for me.

Probably will be controversial to say this but for me Westwood is ahead of Mike Gregory as a legend.

I'd put both of them in my all time wire 13. There's no way you could justify putting nat wood in.

Both legends IMO...Westwoods medal haul is much better than Gregs..BUT Greg was captain of GB ...tough one..I think they are both Legends on equal footings....IMO.
