we did it last year and have booked again for this year. we had two children aged 10 and 5 and did the dover to calais option, we drove all day to perpignan which dont get me wrong was boring but do-able. we just made sure we had plenty of food, colouring books and ds's for the kids as well as story cds for the radio. every other third services had a toilet and a park of some sort so we stopped alot to give kids time to stretch our legs. it took us 14 hours from getting off the ferry to getting to perpignan but that was with a hell of a lot of stops, not just for kids but so i could get out and have a fag so it is achievable in less. the only down side was getting stuck around paris in the traffic. we are staying in Kawan village- Ma praire which is about 5 min drive to the beach and 15 min to perpignan, we got bus to the game. the camp has 2 pools, club, pool table, entertainment and a lovely english speaking receptionist. avoid Paris by heading for Rouen and cutting across country to the motorways heading south - the easiest way is - Calais (or channel port) to Rouen - Alencon-Le Mans- Tours-Poitiers cut across to Limoges and join the N20 down to Toulouse then head for Perpignan (signposted Barcelona & Carcassonne etc) - from Brive the motorways are toll roads but if it's busy or to save money the ordinary roads are not bad

As someone else mentioned, I can heartily endorse Camping Mar Estang, plenty of pools and waterslides for the kids and it's only a short walk into the town centre.

I've also been over the Millau Bridge twice, worth the detour as it really is breathtaking.

i can also vouch for sanjunien`s route from a couple of posts ago , rouen , le=mans , tours , limoge , cahors , toulouse , carcassone , narbonne and perpignan , cycled that way for our first catalan away game , very nice roads and plenty of places to stop , and no tolls . You can also do your sterling moss impression on the mulsanne straight through le mans . And if you do go that way try and do carcassonne at night , the citadel is amazing

it's pretty good during the day as well - I booked a hotel in the old city (cost me a fortune !) as a surprise wedding anniversary treat - had a good result with loads of brownie points !

Narbonne is often overlooked but well worth a visit too - on the Narbonne - Perpignan you pass some interesting vineyards....
