| Quote ="YettonGiant"IMO, I'd rather have Hodgson for a number of reasons (goal kicking, passing, reading play, taking bombs, experience, leadership etc). One thing that Hodgson doesn't do though is return kicks very well. Whenever I watch Mathers he always runs in hard and busts tackles whereas Hodgson dances about and throws dodgy passes sometimes. Saying that, Mathers seems to improve everytime I watch him!
Will be sad to see Hodgson go as he has been without doubt the best player I've ever seen in a giants shirt.

| Quote ="getdownmonkeyman"That doesn't make sense. If Riley was being omitted to accommodate Hicks, then I see where you are coming from. They play in the same backline together, frequently.'"
They have only played in the same backline together this season because of injuries to Myler along with Mathers missing a couple of games, if all our team is fit then Chris Riley wouldn`t be in the starting 13 and more than likely he wouldn`t be in the 17.
If Chris Hicks is fit then he is our regular right winger, i think their is only one occasion this year which i think was against Salford away where Riley started on the right wing when Hicks was also in the line up. That was because Chris Bridge moved from right centre to stand off which meant we had to break up our left sided partnership of Matt King and Ryan Atkins with King going to right centre and Hicks played left wing.
So what i said previously makes perfect sense, if our regular right winger is leaving then presumably it will be Chris Riley that replaces him on the right wing. Whats difficult to grasp about that ?
If we have a fully fit squad then our strongest backline this season is
1. Mathers
2. Hicks
3. Bridge
4. Atkins/King
5. Atkins/King
6. Briers
7. Myler
If we make no more signings for next year then i would expect our backline to look something like this next season.
1. Hodgson
2. Riley
3. Bridge
4. Atkins/King
5. Atkins/King
6. Briers
7. Myler

Discounting the multiple occasions that Riley and Hicks have played along side one another. Do you really expect us to go into next season with one out-and-out winger?

Which bit can`t you grasp ? If we have a fully fit squad available then Riley wouldn`t make the starting 13, he probably wouldn`t make the 17 either hence i said with Hicks leaving then Riley would probably replace him on the right wing if no other signings are made.
The multiple occasions you refer to was before Mathers and Ryan Atkins where Hicks was tried at fullback to try and cure the fullback problem, Hicks is now established as our right winger and has been for some time.
In the current squad the only time Riley will play at the same time as Chris Hicks will be when we have injuries and we have to move the backline around, like i said if we have a fully fit squad then he wouldn`t make the starting line up as Chris Hicks is our established right winger.
Sorry but your just digging yourself an even bigger hole....
As for signing another winger, our overseas quota is full and apart from Tom Briscoe their arn`t any other quality english wingers around that would improve us and we could fit under the cap. We certainly couldn`t afford Ryan Hall, after that your looking at the likes of Ade Gardner and Peter Fox lol

Agreed Rob. We need a class winger from the NRL to replace Hicks & be someone who Riley would learn from.

| Saying that one person I do think would cut it in NRL and I wouldn't mind as a replacement for Hicks is Ryan Hall (really rate him).

I can't grasp is the notion you have Riley as a peripheral figure when he has played in every SL game this season (and twenty-odd last season). He has moved position to accommodate other players absence, never being dropped. I think it is fair to say Riley has made the left wing position his own.

| for the most part its been myler, ppl are focusing on the 3/4 line too much and not whats happened elsewhere in the team, bridge and grix have been taking turns filling in at 7.
For me, the first choice(and our most deadly) backline
Hicks
Bridgey
Atkins
King
thats what got us off to the great start this year, and to an extent i'd quite like to see kings kick returns featuring again, great way to start a set off and march us up to halfway.

| Tonight was Mathers worst performance in his two years at Warrington, not sure if he was still feeling the effects of that injury, very poor.

| Mathers would never take the place of a fully fit Hodgson. The problem is he will be 32 when he joins us. How often over the next 2 years is he going to be fully fit?

| I trust yesterday has put this argument to bed. Mathers was absolutely shambolic coupled to the fact that if we had a reliable kicker the game would probably have been won.

| The one thing Hodgson will bring to the Wolves is someone who can regularly kick penalties and goals - alas something you are sadly lacking this - and last -season.
How many games would the extra two points have made the difference? Why doesnt chicks take the kicks?

Apparently goal kicking aggrevates an old injury for Hicks.
