Well isn't that to be expected?
Alonso has two fairly average seasons by his own standards, he didn't look up to it and we needed British players. He never left, he upped his game and he earned himself a £35m move to Real Madrid. Not bad. Liverpool fans weren't fickle though, and you could argue some Wire fans haven't been. The majority of supporters weren't impressed with Monaghan or King and rightly so, but some people felt King needed to be played on the wing, whilst Mona's needed to be moved to hooker. It just so happens to be that when Smith moved King to the wing, when he moved Mona's to hooker, that their performances gradually improved.
