| We had him for 3 or 4 years before he went to the NRL. Can't blame him for that. Then he made Origin.

Probably the greatest all round rugby player I ever saw but also one of the nastiest and underhand. The ultimate professional who would stop at nothing to get winning pay as easily as possible.
Was it the 68 CC Final when Wigan had no hooker and he and Billy Sayers took in turns to stand offside and get the ball back. It completely ruined the game for impartial spectators and caused a change in the rules?
Undoubtedly an all time great but not the stuff of heroes in my book.

1966. Younger readers should note that at the time you had to kick either for touch or goal from a penalty and if you kicked for touch it was a scrum. Sayer won the scrums about 21-5. First final I can remember.

| I find these exercises impossible because there are too many genuine contenders for each position. For example, how can you pick Ben Westwood and leave out Mike Nicholas or Harry Bath or Bob Ryan etc.,etc.
There is only one position that is not in dispute. That is right wing and there are no prizes for guessing who would fill that berth

the question is about who was your heroes and not particularly who is best.

I am not misunderstanding the question and I am sorry if I gave that impression but all I am saying is that each generation has it's own heroes and it is hard to pick one against the others with the exception of Bev who was a complete one off.
I suppose the biggest heroes of most fans are the players who they first remember as a kid which in my case would be the players of the fifties.

| I've tried and tried and simply can't do it ......
Just too many good players
Managers - Smith, Cullen (saved us), Johnson (if only he had the money that there is now), Murphy
1. Whitehead, Hesford, Johnson, Penny, Mathers (that tackle on Bailey in the CC final was one of the best I've ever seen), Hodgson
2 / 5. Drummond, John Bevan, Chris Hicks, Forster (with an awesome partnership with Kohe-Love), Henare
3 / 4. J.Davies (won games single-handedly for us), Allan Bateman (the Clamp), Matt King, Kohe-Love (with Fozzie and if he kept the tackles below head height !! ) , Cullen (never gave less than 100% - including smashing Goodway after his hand was stood on..... ), Blake
6. Briers, John Wood, Kevin Ellis
7. Nat Wood, Grey Mackey, Murphy, Andrew Johns (what an absolutely awesome night against Leeds. HJ was rocking and it's one of my favourite games including the Wembley wins), Alan Langer
8 / 10. Boyd (what fights!), Moz, Gaz, Bob Jackson,
9. Tamati, Mann,
11 / 12. Nicholas, Westwood, more to add here I think
13. Mike Greg, Sid Domic
I will almost certainly end up editing this a number of times.....

Undoubtedly a great list Fez but throw in Parry Gordon, Bob Eccles and Tommy Martyn and the selction has been neatly steered towards the greatest Wire select from personal viewing (too young for the 50's team) and away from the Kelly's Heroes concept?

| I plead guilty m'lord.
Saw Parry Gordon a few times when I was very young and Bob Eccles also but don't remember seeing Tommy Martyn.
One guy that I thought long and hard about including was Allan Rathbone - purely based on what comments have been made on this site, but again I can't remember seeing him play.

| Allan Rathbone was one of the most vocal and motivated players I ever saw.
Headcase but awesome aggressive attitude!
Bit of a rouge roofer though!
