| A few weeks ago the excuses for playing crap were 'well at least we're 4 points clear at the top' last week it was 'well we're 2 points clear at the top' and now its 'we're joint top' so we've obviously been on a slide and yet we absolutely SHOULDN'T be. People don't need to 'see where we end up at the end of the season' lol. We can see it from here as easy as we saw Hull doing us in at half time.

And when the new boss comes in and inevitably loses a couple of games on the bounce, do we sack him and get someone else in then?

Hanley and Millward would be 2. But I’m struggling on the third…
Woolf left after getting an NRL deal (won 3x SL titles)
Holbrook left after getting an NRL deal (won 1x SL title)
Cunningham was sacked but didn’t win a title
Brown left after getting an NRL deal (won 1x SL title)
Simmons was sacked but didn’t win a title (end of the 5 in a row)
Potter left after his contract expired, then joined Bradford (middle of the 5 in a row)
Anderson left after getting an NRL deal (won 1x SL title, start of the 5 in a row)
Millward was sacked (non performance related - rumoured misconduct), (won 2x SL titles)
Hanley was sacked (non performance related - tried to sell key players including Cunningham), (won 1x SL title)
McRae left after his contract expired and then joined Gateshead thunder (won 1x SL title; Super League 1)

| It just goes to show ,if you want silverware watch Saints.
I think one of the problems with rugby league in general is the lack of money in the game . Not necessarily for enticing imports but for funding a proper route from schoolboy/girl level through to top level sport. We have a wealth of aging players who have to be recycled between clubs & maybe the best we can hope for is to sign the right mix for success like Leigh seem to have done so far this season.

Thanks Magic Superbeatle.
I wonder if Moe Syslak or Lefty goldblatt (who liked the initial post claiming 3 coaches were dismissed) could clarify who the 3rd St Helens coach was who lost his position after winning a Grand Final(s)..?

He spent last season restructuring the squad by popular request from the fans and board - so he's effectively had one pre-season with the players. They're still things to improve...many, but we're joint top with none of the other sides playing consistently either. Let's get things into perspective please.
Are you sack him or keep him?

| Just been reading through this thread and I wonder if some of us are guilty of letting Phil Clarke live rent-free inside our heads. Our dip is not as bad as we are making out. We have had 2 very creditable wins against Catalans away (who are now top of the league lest we forget). Could it be those wins took it out of us, so we went on to lose the next 2 both times?
Whatever, our first 7 games weren't the finished articles some are suggesting - I think we drew the second half against Leeds; we definitely went AWOL for the last 20 minutes against Cas. We were awful second half against FC. Leigh came back at us at our place. Salford had us on the ropes for a while.
If we bounce back and win the next couple in the league and do the do in the Cup at the pie-dome, noone is going to remember Magic weekend. And looking at the pics they sent back my lads aren't going to remember it whatever happens.

For me he's currently on borrowed time although I agree there is a lack of quality coaching alternatives available at the minute. I'm very concerned about our recent performances and how similar they look to last season.
His blind faith in players who are simply and never will be good enough continues to irk the fans. Minikin should be nowhere near this team, let alone starting over one of our most exciting youngsters in years; Thewlis. Dudson isn't worthy of a salary and in Mata'utia and Ratchford we have the two worst centres in the league. Furthermore, we're letting Daryl Clark go to one of our biggest rivals and replacing him with a player we deemed not good enough four years. Lastly, one of our new recruits appears to be heading home next week due to disciplinary reasons so when I hear this argument that Powell has spent a full preseason restructuring the squad, it looks to me like he hasn't done that good of a job at it to be honest.

| Irrespective of whether we sack Powell or not, the truth is we are unlikely to win the GF nor will we finish bottom.
We'll probably be among the best of the rest.
Whether that is sufficient to keep Powell in a job is probably subjective. All I'd say is neither Justin Holbrook or Kristan Woolfe were on anyones radar until Saints appointed them, so the argument that there's no-one else to appoint doesn't hold water, I'm afraid.

Who's the 3rd coach Moe? Magic Superbeetle has named 2 to help you out.
2 of those were Hanley and Millward around 20+ years
ago (I think) - a long time ago. Let me remind you of this posted a few pages back in response to one of my posts:
Quote ="Moe syslak"Going back over 30 years to a different sport to prove your point!! And if you actually want a name, I'll start with Shane Flanagan.'"

So are you seriously suggesting that a top 4/5 finish and a semi final play off appearance wouldn't be acceptable and would have Powell out of his job?... He has to basically win the GF in order to be secure in his job for 2024?

I don't think the warm weather is agreeing with you, go change into your looser underwear. I said it was subjective, so a good run in the playoffs and/or the CC may be good enough for some.
Personally, I think we should be aiming higher, given the personnel. And given the age of some of the stalwarts of the team, if we don't do it soon we are back to a rebuild.

| I'm sorry, the bit I quoted from your post seems to suggest we should be questioning Powell's role if we end up as 'best of the rest', which means not actually winning the GF?

| =#FF0000Im gonna pre-empt where this week is going.
Right folks, i can see that there's going to be a revival of HAPPY CLAPPERS vs THE NAY SAYERS, those that share the same disbelief in knowledge and common sense in each other, but both ends of the spectrum, it can be discussed,[u but there will be no name calling, no dismissive insulting statements.[/u
Converse and debate politely, we're not having a return to last year.
This will be posted across the threads where needed.
Anyone that can't follow the above underlined instruction will take a 2 week holiday.
play nicely.
thanks

So why so many of you are unhappy about over achieving and is bizarre…!
There ought to be only one person on here unhappy….me!
I predicted top and for Wire to finish top ‘comfortably’ top and with the CC and GF.

After the match Powell said that Philbin was a doubt for next week (shoulder) and that Kasiano had a rib injury, so it was decided not to risk him. Drinkwater was also withdrawn with an ankle injury but Powell expects both Drinkwater and Kasiano to be available next week.

| Hull fan, I come in peace. I think Hull deserve a bit of credit on here, Wire pummelled them first half ,but apart from the early two tries held firm. I thought they would be knackered after all that, but they came out fighting second half. After the recent loss of seven on the trot and the recent revival a bit of credit where it is due.
