| I've not checked the stats but our completion rate must have been extremely high. In terms of discipline I only remember us giving away two penalties. 1 for offside on Clarke in first half and 1 for Thewlis holding down in the tackle when the game was won. Fitzgibbon's fantastic facial treatment of Welsby was great to see. About time we had that housery about us.
Need to back this up with a win against Leigh at home.

| So I’ve reflected on it and my conclusion is…bloody brilliant display!
Tactics were right (neutralising the rush defence). The players were at the right level of enthusiasm without crossing the line into “headless chicken mode”. Fitzgibbon has just the right amount of niggle while still being an excellent player.
Our right edge is starting to gel, and now that Dufty has learnt to jump to catch the ball following Jiffy’s on tv coaching hopefully he will continue to do that (I did think he was actually tackled in the air once…).
Harrison immense, Williams magnificent, Hayes quietly but efficiently doing his job, Ashton now the leading winger in SL in my opinion.
And will Saints finally accept that they stopped being “The Entertainers” a long time ago? No wonder their supporters think the game is boring, it certainly is the way they play it.

| Wonder what Phil Clarke thinks about Dufty now. Called him for not being a good enough fullback, some of his passing this season as been sublime.

Saints are still a decent side, and could still beat us on another day, but there's no reason to fear them now. They look like a team in need of a rebuild. There was a time when yesterday's game would only have felt safely wrapped up in the final few minutes, but to be honest, once we went 19-8 ahead, I couldn't see Saints scoring another two converted tries.

| Just generally this 'next man up' mentality is really refreshing. Under Powell especially he would often talk about players missing etc and as a club - and a fanbase - for a looong time we've focussed on what players are missing for us having a massive impact on the game. Whether that was no creativity without Briers or no go forward without Vaughan.
The structure you attack with is really important, rather than relying on one specific person to create something from nothing - credit to Glees i guess?
Burgess just shrugging off players missing with the media must give the squad players much more confidence in themselves that they can go out and do a job. It helps of course having the younger squad players being able to do a job, but again they are being given experience and confidence by not shifting senior players about so we have the most experienced 17 out there, rather than playing a younger player in a specialist position.

| I thought Jiffy was over the top criticising Dufty for the Saints try. The kick was covered by Ashton on the left wing & then it got a wicked bounce. Dufty dropped a high ball in the first half but otherwise he was fine. I do love old Jiffy though & even went to see him & had a chat with him a few years back (he loved his time in Warrington) but I'd give him some stick over that one. The FB cannot be everywhere & has to share duties with his wingers.

Hell yeah, huge credit to Gleeson. The difference in our attacking structure and threat level this year, compared to what went before, is like night and day.

I think the game will give our lads so much confidence especially good to see the younger lads holding their own in such company. I don't think Wood, Holroyd & Hayes (for example) would be expecting this at the start of the season.

We look organised and dangerous with the ball. Remember when all we had was a high kick to King under Price? Then under Powell nothing in the opposition 25m.
That gets me thinking what Powell must be reflecting on when he sees a display like that? All things happen for a reason though and perhaps Powell did his job by clearing out a lot of players and we certainly made a few excellent signings on his watch.

You can date this type of try back to c2010 when the rules were changed so that touching the corner post was no longer counted as being 'in touch'. Wingers, from all clubs, immediately started to practice their 'leaping salmon' technique.

I think Powell had exactly the same goal as Burgess: to bring some humility to the side.
I think the difference is that Burgess is able to relate to the players far more easily, and hence is getting them to buy into his mentality. I also think that Powell wanted too much control over all aspects of play, whereas Burgess puts more trust in those around him to coach whilst he manages the big picture stuff.
Long may it continue…

| Everything is rosy on the back of a big win and rightly so, let's enjoy our victory an excellent performance from 1-17 particularly bearing in mind that it probably wasn't everyone's first choice team. Let's not get too cocky and forget the start we made under Powell and what happened after it.
However, Burgess and his coaching team seem to have a very different approach to man management and the playing team look like they have bought right into it and are playing for each other. They really seem to be enjoying their rugby and with that comes trust that they are all pulling in the same direction and long may that continue.

Wise words. Keep expectations grounded and take each game as it comes. I for one am enjoying watching us again. We are tough, gritty and full of flair.
The Warrington we are used to, after a wonderful game like that, would fall flat on their face against Leigh. Let's hope we can keep the intensity.

There's a bit of balance needed isn't there? I didn't want to come across in any way negative, as I can't tell you how chuffed I was with that performance.
The big deal for me is, I too like the look of what we seem to be trying to achieve beyond this as a one off and having watched it back listening to all the post match interviews with so many young lads out there, we just might be onto something....fingers crossed.

Spot on, UR. We (the fans) can allow ourselves to briefly revel in our bragging rights over the rugby team formerly known as Entertainers, and we're all enjoying our encouragingly bright brand of rugby, but fans and team alike need to stay grounded. Leigh will be a tough game, and we don't get a 6-0 start just because we beat Saints. Another big performance will be needed to get the win.

Totally agree. Thought Amone was superb for Leigh this weekend in defeat and Dwyer/Charnley etc. will be busting a gut to turn us over. This will be a really tough game even with Vaughan returning.

| Anyone else notice Bell's 'contact' with Philbin (67 mins) in the build up to Harrison's try? I thought watching from behind the sticks that it looked nasty, but watching it later his fingers are well and truly in contact with Philbin's eyes.
Amazed the MRP have done nothing.

Yes totally agree. It's good to see a Wire team put in a performance like that. Their faces clearly show they are enjoying every bit of success, and after all the work they get through, why not ?
But Saints were diabolical. Last tackle kicks going straight into touch, Lomax with his foot over the dead ball line, kick off's not going the 10 yards, Wood getting a great attacking pass ( - from a Saints player), Walmsley dropping the ball and having a paddy. It was all a bit 'wrong time of the month" from them. Nice to see though if you are the opposition.
I am not saying we were average. Williams, Ashton and Harrison had great games and deserve the plaudits. Add to that a low number of errors plus a lot of set completions and there is much to be pleased about. But I suspect we are currently over-achieving, particularly if you consider we have had key players injured or suspended since the start of the season. At some point we will inevitably get turned over, but until then we can justifiably sit back and wonder what sort of magic fairy dust Burgess has sprinkled over the squad.

| Really happy with the win, but lots to work on. In the spell while it was 4-0/6-4 we were under a lot of pressure. Scrambled well, but still leaked a lot of meters. Thankfully Hurrell and Sironen blew chances to put the wingers into space, but it could have been a momentum shift. Instead we rode the wave and found a way to create our own momentum.
We desperately need Vaughan back. Stating the obvious, I know. But when Harrison went off we lost a lot of control. And Philbin too, to his credit.
Hayes did his best kicking from deep, and got us out of trouble a few times. Really like how he has just taken that responsibility on for himself, no hiding behind Williams. He, the club and the academy system should be really proud to see that he is earning his shirt over a time served halfback, who is also taking a quota spot. Still, come the back end of the season, he will have to do a little better to really put teams under pressure. But lots to like from him.
Lee Briers commented in the podcast on the BBC about learning when without players, finding a way to plug the gap and go without them, and then having the boost when they return to go up a gear. I think we need to build up to that, particularly with Currie, Musgrove and Vaughan. Those in the shirts need to (and so far, have) find a way for us to not notice they are missing and make the stars wrestle the shirt off their back. I’d love to see Vaughan sat on the bench at the weekend, reward the efforts of Crowther, Harrison and Philbin and get in his ear about earning his place back, think it would be a great signal to those in possession that they hold the cards if they want to start next week.
