Dexter, The Sopranos and The Wire. 3 of the best TV shows ever made imo.

Film wise have a look on IMDB. They have their top rated 250 films and there are loads of user made lists to look through as well. Most recent film I have seen is Limitless which is wuite good.

look no further than this if you're housebound.

The Green Mile

A couple of films I recommend on the Channel 4oD site now that you can watch for free (just go to the Drama section), both political thrillers if you like your historical films:

A Very British Coup - this is a 1980s film so looks a bit dated but is a good story, it's got a young Keith Allen in it as a journalist. It's based on a cracking novel written by Chris Mullin who was a Labour MP at the time, the plot is that a left wing Labour government has been elected in the UK in the mid 80s, and wants to renationalise things and stop the US from having military bases on UK soil...both the 'establishment' and the Americans don't like it, so they set about trying to bring down the government from within. I read an interview with Mullin about this where he said the Americans told him later on that his book had got a lot of interest in the CIA and high circles at the time because they thought it was a pretty realistic account of what they would have done!

Endgame - the book that this is based on is very true to real life events so its not a fiction, basically about the secret dealings brokered by a university lecturer, businessman and exiled revolutionary that set in motion the end of apartheid in South Africa. Has a good cast in it as well and well acted, especially Chiwetel Ejiofor as Thabo Mbeki.

Also on the apartheid theme, its not on 4oD but if you can find cheap on amazon used or something, the film "Catch a Fire" with Tim Robbins, that is a good watch. It's set in mid 80s South Africa, a black guy gets framed for a terrorist attack and put in prison, and comes out angry and radicalised and becomes a revolutionary. Tim Robbins is an apartheid policeman with a conscience that knows something is not right but also has to stop any more attacks.

All pretty obvious really, Although the funniest programme ive ever watched is Pheonix nights with Peter Kay in it. Im sure you could get a box set somewhere.

Whilst going through exactly the same thing (being house bound, torn ACl etc) I watched:

Californication (quality show)
Entourage (Best show on tv, already watched them all but went through all 7 series again)

Dexter, Sopranos and the Wire had unfortunately all been watched already. But the box sets are all on my shelf and they got revisited!

Also check out Breaking Bad, pretty decent TV show.

For pure comedy, Eastbound + Down.

Boxed set of bottom will lift any boredom, esp early ones

Major League. Although, I don't think it is available on DVD.
