in fairness, the mediea coverage of the strikes has been very one sided, and hasn't really made clear what exactly the surrounding issues are.

At the same time though, I think RM staff do need to be a bit more understanding of the total nightmare they will be causing for some individuals

I am fully aware of problems that it is causing and I apologise to customers on a daily basis if it is something that is serious (not a book). However most people are generally supportive face to face.

If you are waiting or need to send very important documents then the Special Delivery service is largely unaffected.

I've read that in one sorting office in London there used to be 30 people with one manager - this was changed to 27 people and 2 managers with both managers getting a 10% pa salary bonus if they increased profitability ..... which they did by cutting the head count down to 22 ........ which affected speed of delivery etc etc etc. You couldn't make this cack up.

Mandelson is trying to offload Royal Mail and by creating the illusion of profitability the price would be higher - but the service is being hammered because of the way he and the odious toad Adam Crozier is going about it (Crozier, another piece of scum - previous experience running the FA).

This Gov't is a sick sick joke. How, as the Labour party, can they betray the people that they were formed to stand by and protect - the workers. They are more than happy to take Union money but don't give two hoots about them once in power and with access to a bigger pot of money to play with - the taxpayers and boy, have they got stuck into that.

You are correct, one of the main aims of this whole dispute is to remove union and therefore make it more attractive to private companies that will attack the service which would make it unrecognisable.

im sure i saw it on the telly a few days ago that RM were trying to reduce postal workers salaries and in some cases it was from £20k down to £12k.

If thats the case i can understand why the workers are fighting it.

incidentally my book arrived this afternoon (our post is normally always delivered by 11am at the latest) and it was a woman who arrived in what appeared to be in her own car and was wandering up and down the road delivering parcels and letters to random addresses. She did have a RM flourescent jacket on though. Very strange.

i have nothing to apologise for, i think that is for the RM, its workers and the unions for getting themselves into this mess in the first place.

there is a compromise out there yet all three parties cant seem to agree to one...PATHETIC.

i dont know enough about the dispute to possibly say, as i said in my OP.

However, i do know that in any dispute there is always a compromise to be found and agreed to by all parties. The peace deal in Northern Ireland being one extreme example.

I've not really ordered anything recently due to this strike action, so have not seen the impact.

Nobody will pick up the Royal Mail as a commercial entity, the time and monies required to convert it into a commercial leviathan would be phenomenal.

Keep with the modernisation policy, as agreed between both parties and carry on as is. The only people to lose out on this will be the general public regardless of who ends up owning it.

This 'profit' that RM returned (how can a not-for-profit company declare a profit?), I assume it is going onto the pension deficit seeing as it has nobody to pay the surplus cash to.

The pension deficit which was essentially their fault when they took a payment break due to bad management? The only reason they post profits (324m) is so they can sell it on.
