| Chuffed that Blakers got it, will be good to see him back at The Willows.
Looking for to seeing the Deadman too, that bloke didn't half put his body on the line in our shirt.

Bugger, beat me to it!
Afraid I'm far too young to remember KG & Stevie Blakeley gets my vote hands down. Along with Malc, Buffer & Scott Naylor he's up there with my post 1990 Red legends. That sidestep was a thing of sheer beauty!

| Ken Gill was the best,in my lifetime,by a country mile.
What's the story of him not acknowledging the club and slagging the sport.
He really was a special player and despite some of the stars they had at Widnes,he is still very highly regarded for the short time he was there.
Good luck to Steve Blakely,he was a better player than HE realised .Sometimes played with a shortage of confidence

I think I read that Ken Gill, doesn't rate the way the game is played now.

Ken Gill
Peter Glynn
Paul Shaw
Steve Blakeley
Wayne Reid
Graham Holroyd

Never saw Neil Baker
would have loved to have seen Emlyn Jenkins
Ken Gill for me but no issue with Blakers
maybe he'll get a reprise of ' walking in a Blakeley Wonderland ' from the Shed ?

Kris was picked because of his affiliation to Wakefield as well as Salford.

Agreed
My childhood hero!! He should have the legends number 6 shirt just for his performance against Wigan in the 1996 CC alone!!
I'm sure the likes of Baker, Gill and Glynn we're all top class, but not being old enough to remember them can't think of anyone else in recent history fit to lace Steve's boots.

| Never seen anyone with such a brilliant burst of pace from a standing start as Blakely. He is a proper legend in my book as he wwnt to Warrington and found out how crap it was and came back

| Steve Blakeley is a modern day legend and imo doesn't get the credit he deserves, lots go on about what he shud have been but imo he oozed class when he was on form and to be 3rd highest ?? Point scorer at the club shud be mentioned more when talking about our clubs greats imo

| Steve Blakeley, I'm sorry to say that he was crap compared to some mentioned above. Fair do's he had the odd good game.
Kenny Gill yep no danger!
Neil Baker - If you never saw him, too young, didn't go at the time etc........... Boy did you miss something SPECIAL.
Can I ask did anyone try to contact him?

I've said that for years, he was fantastic for his first 2 or 3 years but after that he was a bit of a one trick pony, however when he was on form he could be a very special player and like someone has already said [ihe[/i was the only person that needed to realise that. His goal kicking was excellent and won us a good number of games.
Quote ="The Black Cat"Neil Baker - If you never saw him, too young, didn't go at the time etc........... Boy did you miss something SPECIAL. '"
I did write a narrative on Neil baker for the Turkey a few years back (which I've lost) he was for me the finest player I’ve seen in a Salford shirt (being born in 1977 didnt help matters in that department, end of an era and all that, yes I'm too blame!) the things Neil could do with the ball were at times mind boggling, his kicking game would have left 99% of RL players well behind, he only played 19 times and yet managed to score 11 tries, 11 goals and 7 drop goals managing 73 points and all this in a team back in 1985 that was, with all due respect, pretty damn dreadful!
Quote ="The Black Cat"Can I ask did anyone try to contact him? '"
I kept in touch with him for a number of years after he left but we lost contact. I did however track him down to a Club he was coaching at even and his favourite pub back in Oz a few years back but without actually making contact to him.
I may try again!
STALKER!!!!

| Has anyone got game footage of Neil Baker ? love to see them
I have a couple of vids of Paul Shaw in action and he was a class above the team he was playing in , he was either making breaks then turning around and wondering where the hell the support play was , or on the ground looking for his head as opposition teams soon targeted him .
I was in my teens so more impressionable but Ken Gill was a maestro , especially his ability to disguise a lay off or slip pass , mind you he also had Dixon , Coulman , Richards etc to run unto these plays.
Stevie Blakeley certainly wasn't a ' complete ' 5/8 but he certainly had at great 'step and go ' move to take on the line , and his kicking wasn't bad either ! Wasn't as quick when he came back from Wire but they never are 2nd time around ( McAvoy - Naylor etc )

Yeah I've got a VHS of a game at Central Park when we were just pipped by a great Wigan side. I think we were down 20 - 0 at half time and then Baker turned on the style and it eneded up 22-20, even the Wiganers, who were watching a great side of their own, were in a little in awe of him by the end.

Search for 'Souths v Manly 1986' on YouTube. There's a cracking try by Baker.
Don't post the link because it will be removed.

I was a member at Fitness First gym in town a couple of years back and he was working as a fitness instructor there. Not sure if he's still there now though. I reckon I was the only member that actually knew who he was .
