We're fortunate to have a ground that allows us to retain a Super League franchise. Personally, I really enjoy taking my little lad to a stadium that's modern, safe and has great views.
This idea that it would all be ok if we'd stayed at The Willows is plain daft.'"

| Ok. Fair enough, I'm happy enough to hear your plan though.
We've heard all about the poor management/marketing that has been holding the club back, but what would YOU do to improve things?
Serious question, how do you propose we do things differently to raise crowds and elevate the team to the higher echelons of Super League?

| I'm not the one constantly carping about poor management/marketing.
You're obviously an expert at picking out bad practice, so surely you should be able to outline a little good practice.
It doesn't have to be detailed, just give me five or six bullet points outlining practical/achievable ways that marketing and management can be improved.

See that's not fair, your not allowed to give the serial detracters on here a chance to give us hard facts or truths, what they want a forum to just constantly harpe on and take side swipes at people.
I agree for you that it's a pleasurable experience at the new ground and see that yes there are realisitically isses to be sorted out about the venue and some of the decision making in the background but I'd take that rather than lower division rugby in a ground that is falling to pieces and with the financial difficulties the variety centre has suffered little or no onsite facilities other than a woman squeezing cans into plastic pots for us to drink.

Unfortunately it looks like there is no realistic plan its probably along the line of hope that we get further investment sometime in the future who isn't related with sale sharks and if we do have doesn't have their interest above ours
Crazy bonkers plan sack everyone, install alker as coach / chairman, rip the seats up in the east stand and play on Sunday.

It doesnt matter what i would do,its just the same old chestnut time after time. When anybody of the dinosaurs answer these people all we get back is ,where do you get the money from,it goes on and on.Yet the first thing i would do is to bring back the junior devils, fans for the future. 2nd,i would take a serious look at getting closer ties to the amateur clubs in the area.3rd,i would target areas around Salford maybe on a 2 or 3wk blitz on where by a players, staff and supporters actually knocked on doors and gave half price tickets to the families, sold lottery tickets and so on.Scrap the bus from the willows and put it on the precinct, put one on in Broughton, ordsall, and get it out there that its happening.Get in the schools, colleges and uni`s,not just the odd training session but getting them to their local amateur clubs.Make the people of Salford aware we exist, tell them we are one of the greatest teams not only in England but Europe and one of the finest stadiums in the country, right on their doorstep.

There are a number of very good ideas in there, many of which I share.
Why can't you always post constructively rather than going on with the usual 'punch & judy' stuff?

| Thank you,but in all honesty it doesnt matter what we think is it ,its the people in their positions who call the tune.I would go even further but thats for another time.Salford need a new broom to sweep the apathy out,god if you ran a club for 30 years with the same people in charge winning nothing, achieving nothing, going backwards all the time until another get me out of jail card turns up now and again.London the Catalans and even Sheffield have been to Wembley in the past 15 yrs, where have we been, fookink Blackpool.Thats why the people of Salford don`t turn up,its a joke, their e,never win out.Who`s fault is that? Not yours not mine.

| Up til Tony Smith's arrival, Warrington had achieved very little in the past 15-20 years either, yet their crowds have consistently and significantly outstripped ours; it was a similar story at Leeds too prior to Gary Hetherington/Graham Murray's arrival
It isn't as simple as fielding a winning team.
The difference between places like Leeds and Warrington and Salford is that there's a living, breathing rugby league culture. We could be top of the super league and selling season tickets for a pittance but it wouldn't necessarily enable us to draw significantly higher crowds than we're already getting (just look at Huddersfield!).
Our issues aren't as simple on some people in here would like to make out and neither are the solutions.

With a population of 220.000 we have an average stronghold of 3500 supporters with probably treble this figure are dormant support awaiting transformation. Wire and Leeds have successful community programmes unlike Salford. All schools in these areas play rugby league can this be said for the schools of Salford ? No. I know areas of Salford where they've never heard of The Willows nevermind the SCS. You reap what you sow FULL STOP.

and Leeds has a population of 800,000 so really we get a similar following as Leeds do with out the added attraction of the top two teams in the premiership.

That's precisely the point I was alluding to; there are, at last count, 29 community rugby league clubs within the city boundaries of Leeds. Last week the Rhinos community team held a Year 8 nine-a-side tournament at Leeds Rugby Academy: 17 schools turned up. The Rhinos brand is ubiquitous and is far more visible than those of any of the other local sports teams.
This is why Leeds consistently get crowds; having a successful team simply maximises gates. The argument that a winning team is all it will take to flush out all of these supposedly lapsed fans is complely flawed.

| Agreed
Relying on a winning team won't bring the crowds flourishing, it would definately increase gates but the club would have to get off it's backside for once and inject the Rugby League drug into all communities of Salford and South Manchester especially the deprived areas just as MM touched on. This is a must in my opinion regardless of whether we're successful or not and Salford have been ignorant towards these communities. If these two summaries are met in tandom BINGO, it's only then we'll match the likes of Wire and Co.

| I agree to an extent, but it can't all fall on the club and, if it does, it simply wouldn't be sustainable.
The club is there to provide guidance and support but it needs committed local people to really bed roots.
There really should be flourishing junior rugby league clubs in Weaste, Ordsall, Broughton etc. But the reality is that, although coaching support etc from the local pro club is a massive help, it really needs local people to get from behind the keyboard, out of the pub etc and make it happen.
One further area where I have to disagree is that rugby league can only thrive in deprived areas; this simply isn't true and actually holds the game back when negotiating sponsorship/broadcasting deals (check out the advert breaks next time you watch boots n all).
Rugby league needs to spread in terms of geography and demographics if it's to have a viable long-term future. So although it's vital that we have flourishing junior clubs in Ordsall etc, it's just as important that we start making inroads in places like Worsley and Boothstown too.

I never said that Rugby League can only thrive in deprived areas, i feel the schools and youth clubs etc in communities of deprived areas such as Lower Broughton, Higher Broughton and Kersal haven't been reached or the message hasn't gone out to these areas from our club. I've work in the Fire industry for many years to which my job includes community and school visits in the all the Warrington vicinity deprived and affluent, and the amount of times i've bumped into their community Rugby League development staff over the years i'm on first name terms with them. So for me, if Warrington Wolves can put this much effort into their communities so can Salford.

| Regarding the club getting involved in the local community.
A few years ago I was coaching in Bolton and needed some support in schools. Being a massive fan I contacted the club, attended a meeting with a plan and was told the club had loads of coaches and would be happy to help. I thought this would be a great opportunity for the club to spread the word in Bolton. We had one visit from the club to our training ground and that was the last time we saw them. I complained to Mr. Tarry but all he did was pass the letter to the person who was supposed to arrange the coaching in the first place.
An opportunity missed in an area that is crying out for development.
As I worked in schools in Bolton I also spoke to the clubs marketing department. I explained that I would be happy to publicise the club with their help. Posters, promo stuff, junior tickets. Once again got nothing.
Shame really as Bolton is untapped and is crying out for rugby league.
