Jewitt back on track

[iLee Jewitt is ready to make his Salford comeback against Wakefield on Sunday after more than two months on the sidelines with a mystery injury.

The 23-year-old from Oldham thought he had a knee problem until specialists discovered a damaged disc in his back.

Now the all-action prop, who has signed a new three-year contract, is desperate to play in the final game of the season to say goodbye to his pals who are leaving the club.

Jewitt said: “I was getting the pain in my knee but they found out it was coming from my back.

“They weren’t getting anywhere with my knee or hamstrings so they went for another option.

“They were baffled and sent me to see a back specialist. They did a couple of scans and revealed I had a bulging disc.

“I had to have an epidural in my back and it’s sweet now. Within two or three days I was fine and felt like I had a new back.”

Jewitt has been playing with the reserves for the last three weeks and is hoping for a call-up from coach Shaun McRae for the Wakefield game when regulars like Stuart Littler, Willie Talau, Phil Leuluai and Luke Swain will play their last game for the club.

“It would be nice to return and get a game under my belt before the end of the season,” said Jewitt. “But it will be an emotional game because a lot of people are leaving this year. This is one game I really want to play in.

“I’ve got some good mates who will be going back to the other side of the world and some who are going to other clubs.”

Despite losing good friends, Jewitt is looking forward to playing alongside next season’s new signings.

“They have brought in some good, experienced players and with the developments at the new stadium it looks like it’s going to be an exciting year.

“There will be good competition for places and that can only be a good thing. The main thing is you want to learn and the players coming in have been in Challenge Cup finals and played in big games and you can only benefit from players like that.”

Salford City Reds and the Reds Devils Association are hosting the Lance Todd Gala Dinner at The Lowry Hotel tomorrow and Sky presenter Eddie Hemmings is hosting Salford’s player awards evening at the Willows on Thursday, September 16.

Pretty dire game but nice to end the season with a win. A good team could probably have put at least 50 points past Wakefield with the field position we had today.

I agree it wasn't the best game to watch although the best part for me was seeing Stu go over for his 4 pointer. It was a real shame Big Phils "try" didn't stand. It would have been great for such a popular player to finish on a high.

After a long, hard and at times very trying season it was nice to end on a high with a well earned victory. Thought all the players showed more passion and commitment today than they have in the last half dozen or so games and it was a fitting reward for Stuart Littler's final game in a Reds shirt.

I was disappointed and angry though when at the end of the game when Malcolm Alker, Stuart Littler, Big Phil and Fitzy were given the microphone to say a final few words to the Shed but we didn't hear one bloody single word they said.

Did the mc swith the mic off before he handed it to each player?
