Overall I thought both teams were poor and apparently that was Cookes best game for HKR on the local radio phone in with just one caller.
The pitch itself was in pretty poor condition for the first match, whether this is due to the sandy soil or the moist salt seaair.'"
Is this the coverage that showed the last pass to every try yea?
My honest evaluation is that I think the battle will be on between you, quins and celtic for who take the wooden spoon this year.

| My main worries were the way our forwards were out-muscled so that we found it very difficult to go forward, our left side defence (which had to cope with Dobson) and the poor quality kicking game.
None of the above helped us . The positives were that we didn't let our heads drop after being 12-0 down in the 7th minute; some of our goal-line defence was very impressive at times and there were signs of rustiness that should disappear as the season progresses.
To beat the Crusaders we need to make fewer mistakes, give away fewer penalties and gain decent field position more often so that some of the attacking flair that we seem to have can be exploited properly.

The same Sky Sports coverage that only showed his 2nd try? Nothing wrong with either pass, just long balls over the top that's all.
The pitch looked worse than it played, it certainly never deteriorated during the game. For a poor pitch, watch the Leeds v Cas highlights!

| Looked forward to yesterdays game for ages and it ended on a downer really.
The fans didnt get behind the team and the place makes Salford look like New York.
On the playing front Broughton, Holdsworth looked good, Fitzy also looked good and he did a great catch under the high ball. Fox scored a hatrick against us last year so youd think you wouldnt keep kicking the ball straight down is throat. The problem with us is while other sl clubs have improved, alot of our players havent, the effort was there though which is all you can ask for really

| There were a coulpe of points that concerned me regarding the game yesterday.
1, The lack of times that anyone wanted to attack the line
2, Easy penalties that were given away.
3, The Tyrer - Broughton wing, it was too easy at times for Fox. glad we wasnt playing Leeds.
4, Kicking game?
But i supposed yesterday was the first game and we cannot expect too much this season. Maybe bring littler back (eh shirl )

| We got beat by a better team on the opening day of the season, simple really. We did have a couple of nice moves, the try we scored obviously being one of them and we also made some poor, quite frustrating errors in defence. I can't say I ever expected us to go over there and win, although we could have had a couple more tries and made it a bit closer were it not for an unlucky bounce that took away a try from McGilvray and a knock on that could have got Broughton our 2nd try in the first half.
Our kicking game was poor and contributed to the loss given that we were kicking to their wingers and full back at the end of every set. Our completion rate was probably actually quite good if you look at the stats but we rarely found touch or split the winger and full back so were giving them good field position at the start of every drive. Add to that the silly penalties and we were never going to win the game.
We're still not up to speed as of yet. Like last year though, we can only get better and I honestly think that while, again, we don't have strength in depth, we do have a better team this time round and can improve on last year if we can keep the majority of the team healthy. That's a big if though.

| Also, just as an aside, did anyone who bought their tickets on the Hull KR website experience any problems at the gate when trying to get in?
I got there with my printed ticket to be told that the ticket I had was invalid and was sent to the ticket office. After queuing for about 10-15 minutes I was told to go back to the gate as the problem was now fixed. The ticket was scanned and yet again it said it was invalid and I was told to wait for a minute before they just gave up and let me me through anyway.
Bit of a farce really and I only hope that we don't have the same sort of problems next week with our season tickets.

They didn't scan our tickets they just took them off us at the gate and let us through the turnstile. Should've done a few photocopies.
As for the game, not a lot to shout about really. Would imagine we will find out where we are at on Friday night vs Crusaders.

| They didnt scan ours either, 4 of us went up, 3 full adult price and 1 student / concession. They didnt even ask for a student card. Regret not getting 4 Concession tickets now at £12 each. Would of saved a few quid. Aw never mind, im not F*****g Mystic Meg.

GCSE results don't lie, see you can't even count they broadcast both of Fox's tries and the passes were not over the top but along a line which unless the lines on the pitch are not parallel (look that up) and being in Hull may not be, see GCSE results tables 2008, 2009, but the passes sent the balls in a forward direction ie they were closer to the try line when the ball was caught than when the ball was passed.

We had exactly the same problem with printed tickets at the Reebok this weekend - wonder if it's made by the same company (Teamcall IIRC)?

| I agree with most fans assessments, did not expect to get a result, went more in hope, pleased with the new signing & although Broughton was exposed early on, he stuck to his task well, alway coming inside to take the ball & not letting his head drop.
If we have a weakness this year I think it will be in the forwards & this was exposed yesterday.
I too take some positives from the game! I thought after the poor start we battled back into the game & worked hard throughout not letting our heads drop at anytime.
Finally although the ref gave some strange decisions I thought our kicking game was the reason for us being on the back foot, they pinned us back by finding touch every time with there kicks, which kept us pinned in our half for most of the second half, while our kicks were straight into there hands everytime, enabling them to obtain good field positions & punish us.

| One tactical ploy which surprised me was not to counter Dobson. Bit like Andy Greg - he can only pass well one way and that is to his right. Guess where all the tries came? Really should have addressed the problem at HT with a marker coming from left side to block the path to the wings.

You see, your post is riddled with schoolboy errors. Firstly, you assume I took GCSE's, which I didn't - good old fashioned O Levels & A Levels were my school diet. Secondly, as my learned colleague has pointed out, on SSN, Rovers 2nd, 4th & 5th tries were broadcast on Sunday night. Having since seen (via the SL website) all the tries, I can confirm that they were all fine and you need to understand the definition of a forward pass. Finally, as I'm not from Hull, the last 2 years education league tables mean naff all to me.
No need for me to look up the definition of parallel - as a Chartered Engineer, I don't need to.

Actually BigPev, not so - From Note 1 "Direction of Pass" in Section 10 "Knock-On and Foward Pass" of the Rugby Laws Book from the RFL website:
Direction of Pass 1. The direction of a pass is relative to the player making it and not to the actual path relative to the ground. A player running
towards his opponents’ goal line may throw the ball towards
a colleague who is behind him but because of the thrower’s
own momentum the ball travels forward relative to the
ground. This is not a forward pass as the thrower has not
passed the ball forward in relation to himself. This is
particularly noticeable when a running player makes a high,
lobbed pass.
I hate to spoil a good argument with facts!

| Thinking back to the game on sunday i thought we were competative throughtout, the only three problems we had were our 1st 10 minutes Hull KR came out fast ( as i expected them to do with our youthful team) and blew us out of the water, i dont think we could have done anything about it and im sure they will learn from the experience.
My second problem would be our left hand side defence, Broughton was caughtout twice coming in and leaving his opposite number open to score easy tries, is it a communicaton thing? is it a confidence thing? i dunno, after a while it seemed that side of the field got organised and we looked a little better but when leaned on we caved in on that side of the field a bit too easy, its till early door and im sure they try and solve the problem this week.
I dont think you can do anthing about the game breaking try rebounding of Sibbits head straight into the arms of a hull Kr player to score, some you win some you dont in that respect.
I also thought Mcrae left alker on the field for too long during the game all the pre-season matches he has given him 20 minutes then smith has come on a started pulling the strings for 40 mins , soon as the real season starts he keeps Alker on for 30 mins then gives Smith a cameo role of 10 mins eather side of half time??
The positives i think were the way the players kept going it would have been easy to cave in and get smashed by 40+ point but give them credit they battled on and got stuck in, 1st game of the season enthusiam was there for all to see lets hope it continues though the season.
Individually i thought M Smith did very well, The Wizard had some nice touches and Fitzy looked good as well as the usual "8/10ers" again but its a team game so without everyone pulling their weight they arnt able to work the magic.
