| I think it's great news.
Malcs passion, commitment, and work ethic can only be a good thing for the Club.

No, because the announcement seems to be saying that the club are expecting Malc to become head coach in due course. Steve Simms "....We see him as a potential future Head Coach. ...."
The Andy Gregory - Gary Jack situation was dubious from day 1 - how did anyone ever expect that two such egos would ever gel together?
Question I would ask is where does this leave Alan Hunte? Is he not seen as a potential future Head Coach too?

| Time of course will tell if this is a good move for both parties but in this day and age how amazing is it that a player has spent all his career at one club, Players seem to have so many clubs these days its refreshing to see someone so loyal in our game.

The Genius is in charge of the reserve grade teams and youth scholarships and is doing a fantastic job too . I get the impression he revels in this role. Maybe he is happy to stay away from the limelight as I'm sure he would do a good job if he was given the chance.

| I agree with Middleman about the fact that Alan probably enjoys the role he has. If you also take into account that the role of head coach is much different in that job security becomes much more precarious and, unless you win something or vastly improve a team year on year, you could find yourself out of the game entirely for long periods after you've been dismissed. Just look at what happened to Karl Harrison after he left us. Huntey has been with the club for what, 8(?) years now and is well respected, why would he jeopardise that? It doesn't mean he wouldn't make a great head coach or that he lacks ambition, holding down a long term managerial job in any sport is extremely difficult (hell, in football you can lose your job just because your boss gets sacked 9 times out of 10, regardless of how good you are) so perhaps Alan just knows which side his bread is buttered and we should be thankful for that.

| The players were all hoping that Malc would take the coaching role, so it looks like Malc will be the coach in the New Stadium.

Hopefully he will be attending coaching schools and watching and talking to our new players about the techniques they are using now, modern coaching.

Sorry but for me that is way to quick, think the club will go for a big name marque coach from Australia to attract the very biggest named players when the current coach's contract expires at the end of next season. Think that IF Alker makes it as a top notch coach he would need longer than one year as 2nd in command and that bring in said quality Aussie coach he will hopefully be learning the most up to date NRL techniques.

I believe these guys contracts run out at the end of 2011:
David Furner (Raiders)
Shane Flanagan (Sharks)
John Cartwright (Titans)
Wayne Bennett (Dragons)
Daniel Anderson (Eels)
Matthew Elliott (Panthers)
Rick Stone (Knights)
John Lang (Rabbitohs)
Tim Sheens (Tigers)
Some good ones on there (and a great one) but can you imagine John Cartwright coming back to us this time as a coach, in a new stadium a new era, now that would be a dream.

Exactly, think we'd all like to kick of the first season in the new stadium with JC at the helm, would bring a wealth of NRL coaching experience, command real respect from both players and fans alike and not only is he the type of forward we are all screaming out for but he promotes and expansive attacking game too boot.
My number one choice without shadow of a doubt.

? Said he was doing a good job ( With the limited resources available to him ) , I guess every season there are difficult decisions to make about who progresses and who doesn't, does he dump people with out explantion ? , I didn't say he was a 'Saint' or that he gets it right every time ,

| The Rugby Genius is doing a fantastic job bringing the youth through, there will be more who dont make it than do and where we are at the mo we dont have access to the best of the best so alans job is to find the late developer or the one that got away, which he has, several times imo a more important job for us than a assistant coach.
We didnt have a assistant, now we do see how we go, somthing is better than nothing.

| I'm not 100% convinced that Mal will add a huge amount as Assistant Coach but am pleased that he will still be around the club once he stops playing because his loyalty, work-rate and determination are second to none.
I hope that he will learn lots in his new role and ultimately become a top first team coach.
In the meantime I don't feel that his appointment can do much harm as we have previoulsy had no assistant coach and before that had Scott Naylor who never seemed to be particularly influential.

Totally agree with you here KOTS: I was lucky enough to meet Hoss a few years ago while he was at The Panthers (my Mother-in-Law's local club). I was on top of the world to have met hjim and I was like a kid for weeks after. He (and his Dad Merv) were absolute legends at Penrith.
A top player and a Top bloke.
