NRL goes head to head with AFL and Union in NSW, QLD and Vic and loses in all three.

Cowboys, Titans and Broncos averaged 22,416.....down 7,517 on the AFL and actually 140 LESS than Union

Storm averaged 14,670 down 29,143 on the AFL (This year they are on 12,610.....5,684 less than the Rebels)

NSW NRL Mafia averaged 15,525 down 16,060 on the AFL and 3,034 LESS than Union

Whilst you are indeed correct that the method for viewing figures is incredibly flawed and based on averages, where someone can watch a channel for literally a few minutes and be considered a viewer. The figure you gave of 500 is incorrect.

How can 765 homes in Sydney will tell you what 4,000,000 people watch? This just shows it's all about averages. But it's all we've got, so we have to look at it in the generally broader sense for all sports and programmes.

When people mention "don't forget the regional figures". There would be a lot less households involved. See below. Taken from Oztam's website:

I can't believe that's how they get viewing figures.

How can some base their opinions that the Nrl is the biggest sport on that?

If in 3000 odd homes more people watch RL, they are recorded as viewers, then in theory that ratio can be applied to the nation. Times it by whatever and there you have your figures.

Same applies to all sports and all programmes. The numbers all inaccurate but what is proven, is that as a proportion, more people watch RL than other sports on the telly.

The sampling methodology for TV viewing is a joke and would be laughed out of academia. Said it all along. Worked out that I have 4 friends who all watch NRL in Perth. None of us has a measuring box. If we all did the NRL's viewing figures in Perth would go up by about 19,000 viewers!

Actually, to be fair to dally messenger it's really quite simple to spot a RL Fan.

If you call me a Union Troll you are in his gang and therefore a RL Fan.....if you don't, you can't join the SADORLF and you are a TROLL.

Personally, I spent nearly 3k this weekend attending 2 games of NRL footie.......flights, accom, beer, food etc...all adds up. And guess what? I still would have done it....even if it had been RAINING

but apparently, I am not a RL Fan

ill simplify this for those of you that didnt study stats at uni ....

sample are based on statistically significant data ....this is they are proven to work ...

any sampling errors will cancel out so comparisons from year to year or across sports will still be valid as long as the method used to calculate that sample is consistant across sports and years, which it is

i find it really funny when people who clearly havent seen the inside of uni think they know more than the Ph Ds who are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to come up with accurate sampling methodology

I find it really funny that you and your SADORLF mates feel the need to question the judgement of some of the worlds largest TV networks and advertisers who will spend more in 4 weeks of RUWC on sponsorship, advertising and corporate hospitality than the NRL could ever dream of...

union should just use real figures rather than the BS way it does things ...

we all know that it is nowhere near as popular as the soccer world cup so it should stop pretending it is anywhere near as popular by using those dodgy figures of 4 billion ...

if union has a viewing figure of 4 billion, soccers must be 4 trillion using the same methodology

you consider 475 people a statistically reliable sample group of a 1.8million population?
As for agreeing with the trolls, you know I have always considered TV viewing figures as flawed assumptions and am totally amazed that business, media and stations put them out there as some sort of accurate figure.

Don't attack RL........I am just a realist who up until about 18 months ago was quite happy to believe some og the hype coming from these boards. Alas, after 18+ months in NZ and hving seen the state of RL for myself I now know that the musings of a certain poster are, shall we say, fancifull at best (in most cases). When I point out this posters "errors" he and posters who no longer visit tese boards decided to try and show me up.....they failed.
I repeat, the 4 billion figure was not posted by me as being fact...........I have asked dally messenger to prove it was, but he can't, so instead he goes down the insult route (again) with a jibe about University Education.....I also notice that in an effort to keep his new gang in check, he felt the need to "WARN" JB Down Under about siding with "trolls"


As I have said, I spent a lot of money this weekend flying to Auckland and across the Tasman to catch 2 games....I am a RL fan, but I will not blindly defend the game, especially when it has faullts.

I will keep my musings on this subject and the comparison with other codes to this thread...I willl discuss other topics in other threads, but if the SADORLF decide to try and look clever (see souths new coach comment in the Bennett thread.....not confirmed and as I personally know the employer in Wigan, a matter of financial dealing) by repeaing runour, then I will smack them down again.
