Specifically, Williams used fake blood to dupe the referee into allowing Quins to send in a blood replacement at a key moment in the match, at the instigation of Quins coach Dean Richards and team physiotherapist Steph Brennan. Williams later admitted that his mouth had been cut open immediately after the match in an attempt to cover up the fake injury. Richards was ultimately banned from rugby for three years and Brennan for two; Williams was initially banned for one year, but his ban was reduced to four months for his role in revealing the full extent of the scheme.[128
