£27.80 return according to National Rail enquiries. Sadly that involves passing through Newport. I might just pay the bridge toll and drive. Newport depresses me.

| I'm up for it.
PHIPPS, just out of interest, if you're driving across the Severn Bridge and paying the toll how do you plan dodging Newport when the M4 runs through it?

Hate to break this to you crucrucrucrucrucrucrucru but thankfully the people that planned and built the M4 made sure it skirted around the top of Newport so as to spare unfortunate travellers like myself the sheer misery of setting eyes on the place from close range.
I can just about handle seeing the rain soaked drab grey slate roofs in the distance from the comfort of a moving vehicle as I travel westbound each click of my mileometer taking me a step further and further away from civilisation.
Also when you travel on the M4 seeing as you don't really have to enter the city itself it saves the hassle of being stopped at a Welsh nationalist manned checkpoint where you are asked to reveal the last 3 generations of your family history or risk being made unwelcome in all the local pubs or get chased away by a guard sheep and the local militia men.
The train actually travels through the city and as the Wales and West Arriva train network doesnt come with thick curtains or blacked out windows there is a risk of seeing abominations on the landscape such as the river Usk, Crindau or St Julians.
It's the M4 for me everytime. £5.70 is a small price to pay.

| It skirts around the centre of Newport yes but most motorways do not go directly through the town or city centre.
I think you'll find to your horror that the motorway travels through/over St Julians, Shaftsbury, Beechwood and goes very near Ringland and the like. Happy travels. It must be tough coming from paradise. (probably Swindon)

| I'd avoid the bridge altogether if I was coming from oop north. M50, A40 and A449, yes you still have to do the M4 from the Coldra in but there is no toll. Then again I have no such worries given I already am in Cardiff.

| The Prince of Wales is a Cardiff City pub and a lot of City fans go there before games when in the centre.
City are home that day so I'd change the venue if possible.
I'm not for one second thinking this will happen but if anybody is looking to find a pub to meet in it might not be the best choice.

Good call Crucrucrucrucrucru I hadn't thought about that.
It should be empty though. All the Cardiff fans will still be locked up in HMP Swansea as they are away to the Jacks on Sunday 6th.

| Meefy raised a good point on another thread =#FF0000Well it WAS another thread until someone decided it might be a good idea to merge the 2 together when he said that Wales RU are playing a 6 nations fixture on Saturday 12th February.
Also Cardiff City have a home fixture against Shorpe on the same day.
Someone mentioned on another thread (think it was CruCruCrusaders) that the Prince of Wales pub is generally considered to be a Cardiff City supporters pub on matchdays and lets be honest it will be a very brave Welsh landlord that switches off Wales v Scotland in the 6 Nations (k/o 5 pm) in a pub packed full of drunken Welshmen so we can watch 2 English teams (Castleford v Wakefield) play Rugby League.
Its a pretty safe bet that the Walkabout will be showing the Union game.
For those of you that have never lived in Wales I can assure you that 'Rugby Day' is a big event...and I'm not talking RL here.
'Rugby Day' in South Wales is traditionally where around 99.9% of the male (and a lot of females too) don the red and white Rugby shirts, break out the glittery Welsh Cowboy hats, inflatable daffodils and leeks, paint their faces and drink themselves senseless all day before fighting themselves to a standstill later on all across South Wales in such bloody scenes not seen since Owain Glyndwr crossed the border and ransacked England in 1400 and something.
Anyone worked out what pubs will be 'league friendly' on the Saturday?
Terrible planning by the way to have a Rugby League event on in Cardiff that weekend.

| Walkabout has several screens and usually shows 2 or 3 different matches on different channels.
It also has two large screens which should have a mixture of the two codes on.

They had a few small screens upstairs around the bar area and the big main one was downstairs by the dance floor. Mind you it is about 3 years since I've had the misfortune to be in there so maybe its changed.

| As I mentioned on another thread (before it got merged) don't count on actually seeing any of the Millennium magic games on the big screen in the more popular pubs in Cardiff.
Sadly Saturday 13th is 'Rugby Day' in South Wales. This is because Wales are playing Scotland in the 6 nations in Scotland (k/o 5pm) and virtually all the pubs will be showing that. Cardiff will be awash with drunk stocky looking blokes with short tempers wearing Wales RU jerseys (unless they wear their Italian ones because Italy are playing England in the earlier fixture) whilst the women will have Welsh coats of arms painted onto their Orange fake tanned faces and will be wearing glittery cowboy hats and probably carrying large inflatable daffodils. Later on that evening the same girls will be heard screaming encouragement to their boyfriends as they fight one another to a standstill or be seen holding one anothers dyed hair back off their faces whilst they throw a mixture of lager and half digested kebabs up all over the city centre before being thrown in the back of a Police van and driven to Canton cop shop to sober up.
Also Cardiff City FC are playing Shorpe at home on that Saturday and another popular city centre pub (the Prince of Wales) is considered to be a Cardiff City supporters pub on matchdays. It's fair to say that SOME of their supporters are not particularly keen on the English or Rugby league.
I've checked on the Walkabout website and that confirms that they will NOT be showing the Rugby League in Cardiff either.
Good planning to hold MM that weekend.

| 1) a Walkabout? meh
2) why are you interested in whether a pub is showing the RL games: if you want to watch them, go into the stadium.
3) It's the weekend it is because a consultation of fans, including an online poll on the RFL website, showed that having it as the opening weekend of the comp was the overwhelming favourite of the fans.
4) merger, hey …

Well you might find there are some supporters of either of the 2 Hull teams or Leeds supporters who might not really be that interested in paying to go and watch the likes of Catalans/Harlequins etc and might have preferrered to watch them for free with a few beers on the big screen in one of the city centre pubs.
Just a thought of course.

? If they're not interested in paying to go and watch the games, they'll still be Hull or Leeds. You are aware that your one ticket gives you access to all matches?
Or just poor trolling again?

| Maybe some people whose teams are playing on the second day have only bought a ticket for Sundays fixtures.
Perhaps those same people would therefore have liked to have watched the Saturday fixtures in the pub rather than paying to go in on the Saturday too.
I've heard Yorkshiremen don't like to part with money unnecessarily.
