| Quote ="knockersbumpMKII"RFU rules have always awarded more points for goals than tries.
Excert from RFU History of scoring: 1886 (accepted):-"A match shall be decided by a majority of points, a goal shall equal three points, and a try one point. If the number of points be equal, or no goal kicked or try obtained, the match shall be drawn. Where a goal is kicked from a try the goal only is scored."
Later penalty kicks were introduced, allowing teams disadvantaged by illegal play to kick for goal and score points if successful."
Later in 1891 a goal other than a goal after a score (a drop kick in other words) was worth 4 points. The value of kicks for goals has almost always being thus until 1971 when they introduced a 4 point try as an 'experiment'!!!!'"
Excellent, both informative and amusing.
It's no wonder Union has always had the better goal kickers !
So try's are scored to allow the opportunity to score a goal, it all makes sense now

| I'm sure that when I were a lad, like half a century or more ago, a "goal" in Yawnion meant a converted try, as distinct from a penalty goal or a field goal (Yamnionese for a drop goal, I think).
EDIT: Sorry, just realised that this is well off-topic and also off this board.

Off topic or not you are correct. In rugby ( full stop, before the split ) it was called a 'try' because registering one allowed your team a 'try' at kicking a goal, for which maximum points was awarded.

| I read this morning that John Smiths will no longer sponsor the Grand National. With the McGalpharm recently renamed the John Smiths Stadium, could it be they are looking to further invest in RL?

| I read with interest the call for increasing points for a kick but agree that it would lead to teams kicking more.
Id actually like to see a reduction of the value of a try earned as a result of a kickon the same tackle - call it a kicked try.
Might just encourage a bit.more handling and bit less bombing and repeat sets which to.me are killing the spectacle.
As for the sponsorship - Im staggered that in a World cup year and with last seasons sponsorship this wasnt wrapped up months ago.
Perhaps splitting Magic weekend The playoffs + grand final and the league into sponsorrship packages if one overall sponsorship cant be secured.

..............nobody expects the "INSERT SPONSORS NAME HERE" Spanish inquisition
BOT........anything less than 1million a year is a farce IMHO. Recesion aside, other sports are still coining it in and the RFL need to sort themselves out!

No clues on the super league website, just their standard logo with no sponsors at the minute.

| If there is no one stepping up to pay for it would it not make sense to give the sponsorship away to a charity? Like Barcalona and Unicef, the "Joining Jack Super League" perhaps. It would be worth a lot for the publicity, certainly more than giving it away to a truck company in Carlisle.
It would be worth doing to rebuild the market value of it. Let face if you are a company you are not going to pay a 6 figure sum for something that was free last year.

It's a fair point, but I'd personally be very concerned if we can't find someone willing to pay* for sponsorship of our league.
[size=85*last year we had someone willing to pay for it; it's just the powers that be chose the dodgy lorry scam[/size

Didn't football have two kinds of goal too- something like a goal and a rouge?

| Fear not, there will be a sponsor, and it will be announced in January as always as part of the SL XVIII launch. I wouldn't be surprised if it was sorted months ago, they wouldn't have pulled out of the Stobart deal unless they had something lined up or were confident of being able to secure a deal.

Just a small point. Was it SL that pulled out of the deal, or Stobart that withdrew.
Why would SL pull out of a deal part wat through
If you are lucky and it's a full moon, you can still see the Stobart SL vehicles driving round

I was told that privately the RFL quickly admitted the Stobart deal was a disaster, and the new Comms Director was quick to try and get out. I think officially it was by mutual consent. Stobart would have no reason to pull out, they were getting free advertising on Sky Sports etc.
