Funny thing is, my suggestion would see the team I support 'Relegated' to Division 3... But at least they would be at a much more appropriate level.'"
There'll be no change in numbers before the end of this licensed period,so if they were to go to two 10 team leagues in 2015 then york would need to finish in the top six,imo thats possible don't you think?

Dont bring on field performance into the arguement, modern RL is about box ticking, not playing "the greatest game".
Anyway, how do you propose the cull ? would it be based on the SL type criteria ie. ground, attendances, community work, finance, whether the RFL "owns" your ground, development club status or league position ?

I completely understand that licensing is meant to bring clubs up to the 'elite' level, and while everybody insists on having 14 teams in SL I will support franchising, as it's the only way clubs will get a decent go at SL. The problem is IMO the gap will always remain the same (huge)... Surely a simple league restructure would be better?'"
To tell the truth I've given over bothering about it anymore, I couldn't care less what happens to SL
As long as Leigh remain in business, and I feel like watching, I'll go, thats about it really, everything else I put on here is just to annoy people

| This is just a smokescreen for the "big clubs" to get a bigger slice of the pie ala Champions League in .
Peacock and Co. urge for fewer clubs because they play to many games, when in reality what they want is to reduce the SL games so they can have the top clubs in the UK play the top clubs in the NRL. What you will end up with is the top teams playing the same number of games as they currently do but getting a bigger share of the cash as they will be in the end of season money spinner unlike the remaining teams. What will happen is the smaller struggling clubs will get reduced income and as such some will go to the wall, the bigger clubs will benifit in the short term with more cash but the viability for Sky will diminish as the number of solvent clubs shrinks and teams start playing each other 4 times a year thus the cash cow dies. For me the whole package wants revamping to add interest, the SL should start in March in line with the NRL and the Grand Finals should be in sync, internationally the World Cup should be every 4 years and the Four Nations Every 4 years, inbetween the Four Nations and World Cup we should have an extended World Club Challenge Tournanent. This would give a grandstand finish to every season in late October early November with the world club championship every other year giving a larger talent pool the chance to play at international intensity. This in turn will benifit the international game as we get more competitive games between the hemispheres and increase the exposure, as there is no other tournaments on the go at this time of the year and Sky would hype it up no end, this is a win win for me as clubs would have an international competition to aspire to and the England/Great Britain Selectors would have more chance to see players at the elite level outside of test matches.

I would rather watch three close games between Saints and Leeds than 1 close game and two walkovers with Salford and Widnes...
I already suggested a league cup idea too.

| I think a lot of people are against it as they see the relegation/removal to a second tier as the death of a club, because that is what it pretty much means at the moment - the idea behind a restructure is to make it a better competition and ensure even stepping stones from bottom to top - new teams are essential and they must start at the bottom and build up, that is easier when there isn't a massive gap between each tier
people speak out against repeat fixtures but the figures are clear, game 3 between 2 quality sides draws more than game 1 or 2 between a good side and a poor side - the lowest crowds of the year are cup ties between sides that will only play each other once but where there is a massive gap in quality, the highest crowds are the finals between sides that may have played each other many many times - it is the quality of the product in the stadium that draws in fans, not the rarity of the fixture - the rational is higher quality fixtures improve gates and it will improve the players for a crack at the Aussies

My opinion is,our fan bases would be completely decimated and then your just a stepping stone for new clubs

| I know from talking to some of the professional players who are in favour of a smaller Super League that they believe it would have a significant impact in improving the domestic game and therefore reducing the gap in quality between Super League and the NRL. With less professional places for players in the Super League competition would be increased for places and the top players playing against top players week in, week out.
Furthermore players dropping down would strengthen the Championship and it would filter down right to the amateur levels, improving the quality of the sport at all levels.
I understand where some are coming from with regards to the financial aspect of playing less games however a stronger international game is key to growing the sport and therefore increasing it's financial muscle. This would outweigh any lost incoming through playing slightly less Super League fixtures.

These players, are they the ones who would still be in SL after this ' reduction '? , or are they the ones who would become part time and have to do a real job before training every night, then play for winning money only?

You beat me to it.
The original question is 'what is the rationale?' Simply, the rationale is greed on the part of clubs who, by luck or design, find themselves in the current 'elite' - nothing more.
For the good of the sport, we have to play a longer game - instead of jettisoning those clubs who aren't currently up to the standard of the top 4-6, we should be looking at ways to give them the best opportunities to improve; it may well be that SL has become a rich mans plaything, given that the clubs who are successful tend to be those who are propped up by a wealthy benefactor, but it has to be recognised that that position is precarious - the future of the sport depends on widening participation, strengthening community involvement and providing player pathways, none of which would be achieved by this daft, short-sighted idea.
