The reports from the shareholders meeting vary on the sale of season tickets. One says 215 while another 500.

In either case this is dreadful for a long established SL team. This is all the more problematic because ST sales will have been through the period when there was a flood of optimism about Newmarket and the awarding of OPP by the council. Plus there were numerous special ST offers.

It is interesting that 10K -15k (?) will sign a petition but only 215-500 will put their hands in their pocket and buy a ST!

Take away the hardcore of posters / SWAG members / Supporters Trust enthusiasts (often it is the same people in all 3 groups) and considering over a decade in SL one question is........

Do enough people in Wakefield actually want a SL team? [By this I mean willing to buy tickets and attend games rather than sign a petitions)

I would think that quite a few of thoe 15,000 petitioners what signed did so because of the lack of sporting facilities in the city, and did so in the hope that they would play a part in bringing about those said facilities not just for the rugby but for the use all other activities planned as well, especially if they have kids of their own.

He probably does not know the correct figure, but refuses to speculate unlike some on here.

The club has sold a minimal amount of ST's (if the figures quoted before are true that is shocking) and they need to find 500k in 2 weeks just to be sure they cans survive


Sad day for the game in general if a SL club from the heartlands goes to the wall.....surely there must be a RL fan who fancies owning a club and has a few million stashed away. Ian Lenegan was Quins saviour before Wigan came on the market....he can't be unique? Surely the club represent an opportunity to someone? Get their crowds up to 10,000 and with Sky money and residuals you have a club with a 3,500,000 income......it just takes hard work and belief.

It wasn't a case of necessarily disagreeing, it was more a case of being misunderstood. I don't like being misunderstood. I don't mind disagreement. But its done now, and I apologise for the length of it (everyone needs to be told to stop sometimes, so thanks tb).

What was quoted by Jim Elston? If £0.5m is BELOW what the actual number, then I fear for Wakefield even being able to begin the season, and it could be a disaster for SL if they fold. There isn't the time for anyone else to make the step up.

In the event of Wakefield folding (or anyone for that matter), what contingency plan do the RFL have (if any)? What do people think should happen if there isn't one? As has already been said by (I think) Starbug, an odd number of fixtures and an odd number of games doesn't fit. If Wakefield fail to make the start of the season, do Castleford just get an extra two points (since they play them one time extra)? Do the Magic Weekend games become irrelevant to the league to make things fair on the points front? Perhaps this question merits its own thread?

I'm not sure. The RFL have to drop one club at least (due to promising that one club HAS to come up). They don't have to drop both clubs, so if they deem Wakefield in a worse position than Crusaders, then Crusaders may not have anything to worry about (as they hit a lot of other criteria, stadium and expansion being two of the big points that the RFL have been hammering home over the last few years).


Same. As a Hull fan, we've been there before. We were lucky (VERY lucky) with the merger (or more like takeover). This option doesn't appear to be an option for Wakey. If someone doesn't come in to take them over (I really don't believe this shareholder idea will work at all), it probably will be curtains for them.

If they do go bust, could they not reform in the Championship as a community club ala Rochdale and go from there? They seem to be doing a lot better now they are run by the fans, and I'm sure there are enough Wakefield fans to be able to get it up and running. I don't think Wakefield as a club will ever die, they're too strong for that, and they will always reform again at some point if worst comes to worst. I just think the business that runs the club is in serious danger.

I think that if Wakey were to fold, then the comp would have to have a bye week. As for the extra fixture between castleford and Wakey...I honestly can't think of any remedy other than making the games in Cardiff friendlies, but with points difference counting and Castleford being given the average points difference to their + column.

If Widnes were asked to step up....there must be some Wakey players they could take on...even for just 1 yr deals? That would make them competative.........

That said, I can't see the RFL letting Wakey fold before the season starts....they will prop them up until they jetison them at the end of the season.

That would kill MM sales dead, surely? People may even ask for their money back (and would rightly be entitled to it, as it is sold to the public as the SL season opener). It makes logic sense to do in a competition sense (which is why I suggested it), but would be a financial nightmare and a marketing disaster for the MM event.


Could be an option, but I aren't sure that Widnes would want to rush their way into SL when they are pretty much guaranteed to get a SL spot in 2012. They may want to wait and keep the momentum building rather than potentially kill it off with a poor season. Plus, what of the current Widnes players? They can't just bin them off surely?


This looks like the probable contingency plan the RFL would use and could be the best bet to keep the season running smoothly. Do they have the finance to do this for a season? Would that mean they are in charge of the club?

Just what I posted , the RFL will step in at the last minute to make sure they complete their fixtures , but it will spell the end of Wakeys SL membership ,

If it does happen this way, then I hope that the RFL and the Club really market the games at Hell View for the season. It would be very sad for the club and the area if they just "went through the motions". A decent crowd average would help pay-off the RFL the debt from the "bail out' and set the club up for a spell in the Championship. What they don't need is to "go down" with a massive debt hanging around their necks.
Also, although the last home game is scheduled to be v Bradford, surely the RFL/SL could move the Castleford fixture....a fiting way to say goodbye to an historic RL venue.
