Dally, i said before and i say it again, Demetriou is going to bankrupt the AFL in his pursuit of trying to make the one country game a national game in the only country where the game is taken seriously.even then its not taken seriously outside the southern states.
The Swans and the Lions are hemorraging money like you wouldn't believe, now the fool has put a team on the Gold Coast and next year one in Western Sydney. these 4 clubs are never going to make a cent in a million years.
Don't believe the hype what the AFL administrators and fans tell you. the game has peaked as regards TV viewers and the TV companys know this. the next TV deal after this one will be same as they get this time and the one country game will only be played in the southern states after that as there will not be the money to bankroll the game in NSW and Queensland.
Always remind fumbleball fans that there game is Australian as pasta, and has its roots firmly in England and Ireland.

What's amazing is that out of a potential reach of 733,000 407.000 tuned in to watch teh Eels v Cowboys game, that is well over 50% of ALL potential viewers watching a NRL game.
I notice Fox are supposedly willing to pay an extra $40-50mill a year for just one more live AFL game. Wonder what they will be willing to pay us for their by far biggest rating sport if we offer another game through NRL expansion?
I predict AFL will get $900mill (and claim with contra $1bill) and NRL will get shafted again and get around $750mill which is still a healthy increase and more than enough to set right some of the ames problems.

i noticed news ltd recently saying that if john quayle is appointed to the ARL IC they will walk out of the deal
yeah now we all know why
we get around double the viiewers they get

I think that, given it is like a hybrid of Rugby and Gaelic Football nobody is stunned by your assertion at where the game has it's roots ......unfortunately, the word hybrid, as in "developed from", together with it's uniqueness and the fact is played predominently in 1 country and that country is mentioned in the name of the sport would point to it actually being a VERY AUSTRALIAN SPORT.
To attempt to argue otherwise would just smack of sheer desperation.
Why do League fans get so defensive when AFL is mentioned....

you should have left it there......no skin off my nose.
In fact, I told Wellington RFU where they were going wrong back in 2009 when I arrived here.......they wouldn't listen.....their crowd average for Super Rugby was 23,300 in 2006 It was 18,000 when I told them they had a problem (and they ignored me)....it was 14,500 last year.....and is 12,740 this year.........I regularly meet with the guy who told me I was wrong.......and yes, I do say "I told you so".
No matter what code, the principles of marketing are the same and when you stop "inviting' the crowds, they stop coming....the Hurricanes have an arrogance about their marketing....and ergo, WRFU will post a loss of over $750k this year, whilst NZRL will post a profit (helped by a great attendance at the cake tin I may add )

So why in your view, is RL so bad at getting the base out ? Some of our marketing seems, I dunno, directionless at times and the NRL appears to have a similar problem.
Is everyone sat at home watching it on T.V?
I may call and take the outta unionite thought(you kno what I refer to) but they can get the numbers out.

How long have you got
In the UK, the RFL seemed almost ashamed to market themselves in the past, but gradually, as with this exiles game mid season and the double header at Wembley, they would appear to be growing in confidence. The moving of Magic to Scotland was a failure, but the RFL didn't panic as they would have in the old days....they just got on with the job in hand and tried something new.....Magic, back in Wales but as a season opener. The Jury is out on that still, but they are at least trying. I hope that with the New SL TV deal in place, the games governing body continue to push themselves wehn it comes to marketing the game....there are millions of people like me, who given the chance to go and see a live game, will become fans of League....they just need to keep getting the message out there.
In Australia and remember, I am new to this part of the world, I can only say that a certain amount of "field of dreams' marketing exists...by this, a certain amount of arrogance from the clubs. I was in Sydney earlier this year and over the weekend took the ferry to Manly, Northern Sydney etc and saw not 1 poster, advert, flyer, TV Commercial for the NRL which was due to strt 3 weeks later. I did see S15 and AFL everywhere....and pubs advertising the 6 nations LIVE.......
I said it then and I will repeat it......WHY THE HELL ISN'T THERE AN NRL SUPERSTORE IN CENTRAL SYDNEY???????
When I got off the ferry in Manly I was greeted by a poster for AFL ......
The solution? Take 5% of the new TV deal from each club and put it into a central marketing pool.......ensure the clubs still do their own marketing, but with the central pool get something going, like weekend rover tickets on the transport system for $100 (normally $30 I believe) that include entrance to 3 games over the weekend......do something new....get old fans back, get new fans in and get the exisiting fans going to other games as neutrals. One of the best things about League is you can enjoy a game as a neutral......Union has to have an edge I believe...but league has the product...it just needs to sell itself.
As tacky as the AFL can seem...they have no problem marketing themselves...and it's the same with Union.
Look at Union in the UK.....plodding along with a 10k average but able to sell 75,000 tickets for 1 game on boxing day that would normally only get 10,000.......League needs to grow a set of marketing b0llox as big as the other codes.....IMO that is
