Thats to be expected by rational people thought aint it.
New stadium, New sport, New team thats the media hype surrounding all that, if you expect the same number of paying punters to turn out every single game forever , then you are deluded.

More than half the crowd against us were home fans. The main stand was full with home fans. We took just under 3k.
Leeds had an allocation of just under 2k apparently. Over 8k home fans.
I would imagine Hull FC would take around 2-3k but the crowd was near 7k.
Hudds took 1.5k according to someone on their board, so again, you got it, more home fans.
Catalans was a poor crowd but still 2k for a cup tie on tv. Home fans again.

| HKR attracted many gates of around 1600/1800 in the late 90's and early 2000's and look at them now, 8000 home fans almost every game.People get bored after so many years of lower grade RL.Besides,as has been pointed out,it was a midweek pay on the gate cup tie live on TV so was always going to be below our average.Don't any other professional RL clubs post cup tie attendances, live on TV,much below their league average or is it just Widnes?

| CD - Widnes fans do go on about their crowds in comparison to others.
Regardless, I would prefer to see Widnes in SL in place of Les Cats and the Crusaders. I think you will get decent, but not great, crowds. I just hope you winthr GF to justify your position in SL.

Justify to who?

Good argument apart from the fact you don't ask how many of the 6124 for the home game against Catalans were away fans also.

Just to follow that up a) Hull took nowhere near 3k, Hudds didn't take 1500 either, chalk a third off each one and you might be close.

| Back to the OP , yes it was a poor crowd , I'm sure the management at Widnes were dissapointed with it , but unfortunatley it seems to be the norm for cup matches were everybody pays , especially televised ones
As has been pointed out earlier , the Vikings are just treading water for the last 10 months and will do the same for the next 12 , they will get a SL place in 2012 , if they dont then nobody will be under any doubt as to how ' bent ' the franchise system is
When they do take their SL place they will get crowds better than 3/4 current SL clubs , it will be interesting to see what sort of attendances the club that comes down from SL get in the championship and the NRC in 2012

They would get better crowds than some SL teams but 3/4?? I think not. That would mean they'd be averaging 10,000+.
I'm still not convinced that a SL club will go down. If that happened, the first thing that would happen is that the relegated club would take the RFL to court as the decision would pretty much make the club insolvent.
It's going to be a real mess and a PR disaster for the sport.

Not true. 4th lowest average home SL attendance so far this season (excl tonight's games) = Crusaders 6,691. That's quite a way short of 10,000.

3 years before being able to apply again would mean lost sponsors, £1M+ Sky cash etc etc. Are the 'threatened' SL clubs only offering 1 year contracts from now on ?? You can't pay many SL player contracts on £300K a year.

The original post said that Widnes would attract better crowds than 3/4 of SL clubs. As there are 14 teams in SL, that would mean they would be the 3rd or 4th best supported team in the comp. Currently (going from www.slstats.org/) ....
1. Wigan - 16,207
2. Leeds - 15,333
3. St Helens - 14,034
4. Hull - 13,599
5. Warrington - 11,143
Widnes crowds in SL ...
2002 - 6,510
2003 - 6,511
2004 - 6,153
2005 - 6,794
I've no doubt they'd better those crowds from the last spell in SL they'd get nowhere near 10,000.

Slight missunderstanding , you read it as 3 quarters of SL clubs , I was implying 3 or 4 clubs currently in SL , as for the 2 nd highlighted bit , I totally agree

The SL applications have to be in November this year, with the decision day being spring 2011. As Starbug says, we're probably only 10 months away from hearing who gets the nod from the Championship. I believe they will announce the 'winning' Championship club(s) 1st and then the SL club(s) who are to be relegated get announced at a later date. The reason being that 1st of all it gives the Championship club enough time to prepare and also if a SL club was told they were getting ditched in April/May, it would be unrealistic to expect them compete right to the end of the season.
As for the SL application - I believe a Championship club has to average 2,500 or more to statisfy the minimum standards regarding attendance. Looking at the RLfans Championship stats page, Widnes are the only team to stasify this criteria. In fact if the RFL do what they did last time and look back at the previous 3 years, they will see that Widnes are the only Championship team that have ever satisfied this criteria.

This thread is getting nowhere !
Who cares ?
Put some of the lower SL clubs in the Championship and watch them struggle. Widnes, Leigh and Fax have a solid fanbase and thats a credit to them. Barrow are doing fine, but some have jumped on the bandwagon in the last 3 years, and Fev has always had 1500 loyal supporters.
If Widnes want SL, then fine. I feel they deserve it as for me they are quite easily a top 8 club.
Widnes' attendances will be 8000+ easily if they are to be competative. The Wire match alone will be 12000+.
Next season is going to be fun with the big shadow of doubt against 1 SL club guarenteed not to get a Franchise.
As a Leigh fan, I cannot be bothered with SL yet. The infrastructure is there but the team isn't, but averaging nearly 5k when watching your team get spanked week in and week out was very commendable when we were in SL. It almost killed our club, and I really fear for the lower clubs currently in SL.
Good luck to Widnes. They deserve it.
I would still prefer P&R, but watching Barrow getting 70 put past them each week isn't very motivating. Maybe it would be best for the Championship clubs to break away and go back to Winter ! Year round RL for the flatcappers !

Couldn't agree more - it must have been such a demoralising time for Widnes fans the last couple of years since the franchise farce. Don't blame the stay-aways at all.
When they get the franchise they deserve I reckon the crowds will shoot up like ours did.
