I think the player went too far by posting it on twitter, airing his dirty washing in public, enraging the social justice brigade and ruining a man's reputation. All over a relatively minor issue that was a bit naughty but could have been sorted behind closed doors. Absolutely no need for it.'"
Victim blaming isn't cool.
The player did nothing wrong was and was correct in calling out racism.

| I'll just get it out the way first and say that it was wrong to say what he did, no matter how tongue in cheek he thought it was.
But I can't help but feel the backlash from fans would have been so much less if it was the other round and the Swinton chairman had made the comment to a Toronto player. People had a chip on their shoulder over Toronto the moment the club was announced and a lot of people are just rubbing their hands together at the thought of them failing. To me, Argyle has issued an apology (and even tried calling the player to apologise) and a suitable fine should be given and then end of story. I can't see the people who are demanding action against the whole club (and I've seen mention on here and also facebook about giving them points deductions) doing the same if it was the Swinton chairman. I bet a lot of people couldn't wait to get on the internet when this news broke for another round of Toronto bashing.

Now I don't agree with that at all. If you feel wrong had been done and no justice has come of it, you certainly should speak out. Unfortunately the RFL had a duty of care here to not only Kenga but also David Argyle and the Toronto club as a whole and have failed so spectacularly that a man's reputation has been ruined, a club's major backer has had to leave (leaving them in potential peril) and the fans have been left torn again - all over something that should have been addressed behind closed doors immediately.
I'm sorry, but David Argyle isn't the person that should be voluntarily walking out of his role. The RFL have monumentally f'd this up - either through incompetence, through hope it would all just disappear or through not thinking it was that big a deal. I'm actually gutted about how bad this has turned out.

This sadly is spot on. If it was the Swinton chairman saying it to a Toronto player it wouldn’t be getting the same level of interest from people wanting punishment especially a points deduction for Swinton.

Just NO!!!!
Jose has done nothing wrong!
This could have actually all been sorted at the time it happened by apologising to Jose when called out about it immediately after it was said. Instead argyle laughed.
When it was reported, he still did not apologise.
The ONLY reason he’s apologised is because Jose went public. And the only reason he went public is because Argyle thought he could get away with it. Which suggests he’s not contrite at what he said at all!

Based on the email I have received from David Argyle this morning the club is still going to move forward and remain committed to “growing this great game” (his words not mine).

Sadly it isn't.
Sorting things behind closed doors or treating it as a one is why we still have racism in 2019.
He raised it through proper channels and let people know what he thought publically to make sure something happened.
I'm pretty sure everybody now knows it is wrong to make racist comments. Making them anyway and then brushing them off is giving strength to racists in general whether it was a one off or not.
Level of interest doesn't matter. It's still wrong.

| So that comment in bad taste has so far ruined a mans reputation, maybe even a club and the future of rugby league in Canada. Like another poster said, probably better to deal with it in house, it’s not as if he’s dressed up as Al Jolson on the side lines.

Unfortunately there are clearly done people treating this as one and the same, hence the ridiculous suggestions of over the top sanctions to the club.
Just like anything, there are different levels of crime here and it requires different levels of punishment. It's not just a case of "Aaaah, racism! Throw the book at him!"
Is racism any worse than sexism? Homophobia? If people believe so, tell me why. If people believe not, to me why this did be punished differently to all the homophobic and sexist incidents that have occurred in the past?

Kind of missed the point. Never said sorting it behind close doors wasn’t wrong and that it isn’t wrong to make these comments.
Simply commented on some fans reactions to the news and how they want Toronto punished as a club included a points deduction. Very unlikely people are calling for that same level of punishment if it’s other clubs.

Let’s just get this clear. A RACIST comment in bad taste.
Tbh I don’t think the comment itself ruined his reputation- it was his reaction when called up on it that’s done that.
If he’d apologised to Jose at the time when Jose told him he couldn’t say things like that we wouldn’t be having this debate.
He had every opportunity to deal with it in house......

There so much wrong with your post it's hard to know where to start.....
1. It wasn't a comment in bad taste, it was a racist comment. Trying to belittle it as bad taste shows an inability on your part to grasp that racism in not bad taste, but an evil attitude......or maybe you have sympathy with Argyle's attitude towards Black People?
2. His reputation has take a deserved hammering, not only because of the comment but also in how he initially dealt with it going down badly (a drinks voucher and a laugh) and his initial statement that didn't really apologise for anything. IMHO, how he now behaves will be under scrutiny, but he can re-build his reputation if he wants to.
3. The Game in Canada? Really? Regardless of the fact that the Wolfpack are a Mancunian side who play some games in Canada aside, he has stated he will continue with his fiscal obligations, so Toronto will be fine. How the game is perceived by minorities is another matter, but if he's genuinely sorry, he can repair that damage with some old fashioned community work....and by that I don't mean buying rounds of drinks.
4. Dealing with it In House or as it's otherwise known, brushing it under the carpet is not an option in the 21st Century. He chooses to live in the public eye and as such, his every move is scrutinised......he F%^ed up and he has paid the price, although it is a minimal price as he still has his club.
5. Al Jolson? Seriously. If you think all racists dress up as a minstrel, then you live in a bubble. The "off-handedness" of your comment again makes me think you lean towards sympathy for Mr Argyle's Stance on people of colour rather than sympathy for his plight.
The Bloke made a racist comment and on 2 occasions didn't grasp the nettle and deal with it.......on the third he's made a token gesture (2 jobs he certainly wasn't getting paid to do).......the game has no place for Racists and until he steps up and proves me wrong, that's how I will view him

But that unfortunately is why it's still an issue now.
Whether malice was intended, malice was felt, because the words backed up all the racist comments we've seen since the 50s and before.
He made not be wearing a white hood or a little mustache but trivialising what those types of people have done in the past is just making it all harder.
He shouldn't be treated like a racist. But he does need to know its wrong and he has to stop.

That is a very scary route to go down, to say malice wasn’t meant but it was felt. So they should be punished because someone took offence where it wasn’t meant? Chuff me, we really are in a sorry state if that’s the case, a very scary and sorry state.
Why didn’t the player when the bloke said that turn around and say “What do you mean by that mate?” and then the bloke would have either apologised or put his foot in further but they could have sorted it there and then. But posting it on social media is just doing it to gain publicity in my opinion.

| Free speech isn't freedom to spread hate speech, if you do you take the consequences. Anyone who thinks freedom to write or say discriminatory things is ok gives liscence to the terrorists and violent abusers further up the line.
Jose is a really good guy and he has every right to go public with it when the 'right channels' saw no action taken.
