| I said on other thread that I'd love Kev to win.
But in terms of achievement this year you can't top beating Wladimir Klitschko in Germany to become the unified, linear and undisputed Heavyweight champion of the world.

| The current world rankings of the guys Murray beat in Davis Cup singles this year
10th
11th
15th
16th
18th
48th
80th
109th (that one was in the final)
Is that really that impressive when you take the GB specs off? The way they went on about it you'd think he beat a Serbian inspired Djokovic team or a Swiss side with Federer in it.....but he didn't

He's not the undisputed champion, Wilder has the WBC belt.

| the most impressive thing about his run was that he played 3 matches back to back in every tie winning every single one and obviously pretty much won the trophy himself. If you watched the tie against france when he played against simon he was on fumes but somehow managed to get over the line. Tennis is an extremely gruelling game at times and to what he has done is pretty special, regardless of his opposition.imo he deserves the award as much as anyone. If Sinfield gets top 3 here somehow, that would be a great achievement imo.

| Murray can only play who’s in front of him, he made a conscious effort to assist G.B. to win the Davis Cup & it paid off.
Due mainly to one player an eighty year old drought is over, yet he still finished as No 2 in the world rankings. If he wins it then it’s thoroughly deserved.
Would Sinfield have been in the running if he hadn’t swapped codes, I’m not so sure? But at least it’s given the Loiners a last hurrah for their immortal redeemer & a slim chance of a final cherry on their 2015 cake.

For what its worth, the criteria for SPOTY are:
"The Panel will select a short list of sportspeople for the main award on the basis of the following criteria:
Reflects UK sporting achievements on the national and/or international stage;
Represents the breadth and depth of UK sports;
and
Takes into account 'impact' over and beyond the sport or sporting achievement in question"
www.bbc.co.uk/sport/sports-personality/34727935
Accounting for that, then Sinfield's laudable achievements at club level this season might put him below those that compete on an international stage, but its was nice he was included this time around. If he doesn't win some might blame McNamara for not giving him a cameo appearance in the final test match.....
Now for the public to decide.

True, but if Wigan, Saints, Warrington and Hudds hadn't bothered competing in this year's SL would Leeds winning the treble been that impressive? Not saying he doesn't deserve praise for winning it but when rating it against others you have to consider the strength of the field the nominee was up against.
Quote ="^"Would Sinfield have been in the running if he hadn’t swapped codes, I’m not so sure?.'"
I don't think that makes any difference and think he'd still have been in had he just retired (had he carried on playing for the Rhinos in 2016 I don't think he would've as it wouldn't have had the 'story' of a swansong). We aren't talking about a guy who joined Bath or Saracens or Wasps and could be knocking on the door for England soon. It's a guy who is just giving it a little end of career try for a year or so in a lower league with a northern club and has played a sum total of three games, I highly doubt that RU swayed them.

| Surprised that Joe Root didn't make the list after being man of the series in The Ashes victory, maybe there's a BBC conspiracy against cricket since they lost the free to air broadcast rights.

Yes he is. He has the most belts and is linear champ.
Larry Holmes gave up his wbc belt in the 80's and took the Ibf belt but was still the linear and considered I disbuted champ.

| Usually if you hold 3 of the four belts you can be considered the undisputed. Add to that the ring belt and being the lineal champ I think he can be called the undisputed champ

| Quote ="LifeLongHKRFan"I was thinking more last season when the young number 6 (Sutcliffe I think) was playing when Sinfield was dropped.'"
Sutcliffe played very well and McGuire was superb at the time. Plus it was known within the camp that Sinfield was finishing that season so it was a good opportunity to give Sutcliffe some game time.
Sinfield started in some very good performances for us this year too including 30 point winning margins over Hull, Huddersfield and Saints, the fantastic performance v Saints in the cup semi, the cup final and of course the final 3 games of the season v Huddersfield, Saints and Wigan.
I think you're looking back and seeing that we had a dip in form just after Sutcliffe's injury but that period coincided with a lot of injuries for Leeds and to important players for us like Aiton. The loss of him really affected our play, especially our attack and (along with injuries to our second rowers) our defence in the middle of the field.
Sinfield's kicking, game management and calm head are the reason we've won so many titles and is a major reason as to how we won the treble this year.

The undisputed champion, and lineal champion are not the same thing, there hasn't been an undisputed HW champion since Lennox Lewis beat Holyfield in 99, and surprisingly Larry Holmes was never the undisputed champion either.

I think you’re been a bit disingenuous to the G.B. team, the four teams they played this year were at full strength, they didn’t play Serbia or Switzerland because they didn’t draw them.
But I do like your analogy regarding the likes of Wigan, St’s etc. This seasons S.L. has been similar to the Davis Cup. Leeds have swept all before them, as have the G.B. team. But next year G.B. will probably have to beat Serbia & Switzerland, whereas Leeds will still be playing the same old Belgians & Aussies of the S.L.World.

| I don't usually talk boxing out in non boxing forums as as their is usually very little knowledge about boxing.
But due to politics in boxing today it is virtually impossible to hold all 4 major belts at the same time so if you want to go by what Wikipedia says then other than a minor miracle there will never be an undisputed boxing champ ever again.
There is no rule book, if the boxer becomes widely accepted as the undisputed champ by the boxing public then he is. Especially if he holds 3 world titles, the ring and the lineal title.

Well, if Fury and Wilder meet in the next year, which they should, then we will have an Undisputed champ again.
The main reason we haven't had one since Lennox retired is that the Klitschko brothers have held various versions of the titles and have always refused to fight each other.

| I'd say it was as much to do with the top fighters seemingly unwilling to fight each other than it is politics. Kovalev-Stevenson is a prime example of a fight that should be easy to make, but the 2 camps are dragging their heels. It's infuriating from a fans POV. Especially when you consider a fight like Ray Leonard-Tommy Hearts was made in 5 minutes at the airport. Although Leonard did avoid Marvin Hagler for years so it's nothing new.
