| Another embarrassment for international rugby league. It's clearly a try.
Let's face it he was never going to give it. Why would he? This is an Australian tournament and Australia must make the final at all costs.

| England should honestly just pack their bags and go home. No point even trying against that sort of biased officiating. Did anyone notice how the video ref stopped looking at the slow motion replays and started running through at normal speed when it looked like he was going to have to award a try?

| GROUNDING means (a) placing the ball on the ground with hand or
THE BALL hands or
(b) exerting a downward pressure on the ball
with hand or arm, the ball itself being on the
ground or
(c) dropping on the ball and covering it with the
part of the body above the waist and below
the neck, the ball itself being on the ground.
So, with reference to (b), it clearly was a try. Consequently I'm assuming we'll hear an apology from the Australian RL on the 5 o'clock news.

| It's not a try - just given the wrong decision at the outcome. Should have been a dropout for Australia due to Inglis grounding!
Nothing more to see here

| The two, soft laying on penalties that got Australia into the game were far more biased IMO. Given the flops and wrestling we saw from the Australians to give two in 2nd half was farcical.

Setup a seperate 5 nations with England & NZ and Wales, France, PNG, Samoa, Fiji etc rotating into it or by winning the European/Pacific comps. At least whoever wins will be honest winners. If the Aussies want to join in they can do. Under full international rules, not NRL based rules & interpretations, and with neutral refs.
After all there was only 20k there. The Aussies clearly don't care for international RL if they can't win every game, and that 20k is no great loss. The last England/GB v Australia crowd in Britain to be that low was in 1986.
If the Aussies want to retreat within their own borders then let them. And let them do it well and truly on their own.

| Will the rfl come out and publicly say something?
Add the word gutless to inept.
Either that or a a full on endorsement and crawling under the Aussies backside.
Cheating plain and simple.

| A friend of mine umpires cricket. He was talking with the captain of one of the teams after a game one day who was saying how much better it was when they have a neutral umpire (like my friend, which is not always possible at that level). Not because they're necessarily better, but because there's a difference between feeling unlucky and feeling cheated.
My issue isn't so much that it was a bad decision (though in my, admittedly biased option it was probably wrong), it's who had to make it. If it had been a Neutral VR I'd be disappointed, but that's sport. This creates suspicion which isn't fair on anyone, including the officials themselves.
Anyway, England would have likely missed the conversion then lost narrowly to nz while Australia put 40 odd a drained Samoan team, given how these things always seem to pan out. Even a draw would have been nice though, and not undeserved for all that England went into their shell in the second half.

Totally agree.
Let the match officials make the decisions. They will get them right or wrong, that's part of the game, just like Clarke had a 2 man overlap and blew it by not passing.
This is a high speed, tough collision sport. Slowing it down to nano second views from every angle has, and still is, doing the game a great disservice.

| It really is time for the RFL to draw a line in the sand here.
Although not too many people will have been screaming for a try in live play, the video evidence is absolutely clear cut, it was a try.
People saying that the VR is a waste of time are wrong as without the VR, they wouldn't/couldn't have given the play a second look BUT, the VR has to get it right every time and they don't seem able to do so.
The RFL need to create a stink over this and stop pandering to the Aussies and allowing them to choose "the best" officials, which always happen to be Australian ???
I'm absolutely furious with this, stuffed again by cheating Aussie officials.

| If the Aussies were behind and made exactly the same play does anyone think the try would have benn awarded 100 % dead certain try.
They would have all been celebrating the Aussie winning champion mentality.
Completely at a loss to understand how that couldn't have been given.

| Reinforces why I dont watch NRL, just a wrestling contest with the occaisional good bit of play, its not RL
Until they decide to ' play the game ' rather than just keep finding new ways to win at any cost ( then adjust THEIR rules to suit ) International RL will never grow or prosper

| By the strict rules of the game it was a try. To suggest that it was a rising ball which pushed Hall's finger back is simply not borne out by the video evidence & it's a contrived explanation to support the on field ref's initial decision.

| Cannot understand people saying England blew it because of the poor second half performance. Maybe England getting absolutely hammered by the referee in one of the worst biased refeering performances I have ever seen. Ow, and the behond scandalous decision by the VF at the death.

| Quote ="Nozzy"Don't think that was even a 50/50 call, after watching it 5/6 times it looked to be a clear cut try. That felt like a kick in the guts, I am stunned that they can disallow it. The 'excuse' for not awarding it was that the ball was rising when he touched it but there is clear evidence to show that the ball was flat on the ground when Hall's finger hit it.
So angry!!
'"
we might as well play American football with an end zone if that is a clear cut try..it was a 50/50 call with Australia getting the ccall

| Funny how the two reasons he gave for a no try were dispelled. Ryan Hall was going for Inglis not the ball - nope... ball was on its way up on to Hall's finger - no, it was on its way down. You could tell he was desperate to find a way NOT to award it - see the way he played it in normal speed as the last shot before the big screen, because it never looked a try in real time. The Slow mo and freeze frame displayed the facts.

Positive statements are more verifiable than negative ones. A million pictures of something not happening are rendered irrelevant by one showing it did.
Interesting to hear the Aussie commentary on it. They seemed to think it wasn't a try at full speed, then began say to it was on the slow mo replays, seemed to become disorientated at that prospect and then just went in to unreasoning denial - 'Nooooooo', and a preference for the faster version - 'you can't give that'.

| Disgusted. We got nothing in the 2nd half, the Aussies were allowed to mess around and lie on all day while we got penalised for the same.
That performance and the final disallowed try is clear evidence of why neutral officials is an absolute must. But still we bow to their ridiculous demands and throw the game into farce.
Hall's finger grounds the ball, clear as day. "The ball was rising" is a shocking excuse - the ball was on the ground, simple.
If they're going to cheat, at least be subtle about it. I'm almost embarrassed for them.

the " clear grounding" is open to speculation, but the call of " ball was rising" is just so wrong...all the ref had to say was " no clear grounding" and as with nrl video rules( which they must be using as all tries were awarded/disallowed before going to video)....so with the last try if ref didn't make a call and they are playing nrl rules, then " no try" was the presumed call....the try was 50/50 , so with nrl rules the try was cancelled
