Has anyone seen that Wakefeild have done an advert for ITV to be played this week?

Its a shame because all the clubs seem to be able to market themselves well, but this isnt backed up by the RFL/Sky

isnt that the problem tho? the third link is merely a parody of the second link. what do any of the clubs in England, at any level, have to use as a foundation for their marketing?

when harlequins were restructured etc last year, one of the commitments they wanted from the RFL was assistance in marketing RL, rather than Quins themselves having to bear that burden.

The problem with virals is that it is an even less exact science than getting an ad on TV. The overall cost of putting together and publicising a viral may be less than putting an ad on TV, but your Return on Investment might not make it cost effective. Its nearly impossible to predict the success of a viral and its difficult for them to be a success at all, so there's a strong chance that it could be a waste of money. Its also difficult to demonstrate the benefit of the ad, e.g how many people bought a ticket as a result of watching a viral. I would imagine this is the reason why the RFL doesn't go chucking money about on adverts. It has a solid bedrock of followers, which will turn up to marquee events as well as turn out regularly for theirs clubs, so does it need to spend money trying to appeal to new punters when it might not see an ROI?

The "They're Coming!" scheme has been brilliant so far and very encouraging that the RFL are taking on board new ideas of marketing. The costs have been minimal; slide for big screen, five hired actors, five robes, an emblem design and a photo shoot. They've used Sky Sports coverage and the SL website so far, which keeps costs down, but does mean they're only appealing to hardened fans. However, for a relatively little bit of money they've achieved high visibility and because they haven't launched it or said its the Exiles, its created a good amount of excitement and gotten folk talking.

The trick is to think "outside" the sport......even a parody of Northerners would get attention even though it's a cliche.....something that starts with the Hovis ad music, 2 old guys chatting over their ale talking about the "good old days".....flick to sepia film footage of mines, black pudding etc......and then flips to OT, Packed to the rafters with big hits and fast rugby...........then back to the 2 guys in the pub looking stunned. Get the guys friom the fast show to do it.....post it on youtube and see what happens.

The thing with viral, like this rebecca black scenario....you never can be sure it will work, but as I said at the top of this post...if you get it right, it can be brilliant!

Marketing nouse is a huge problem, people just dont have it in RL, either that or they cant be bothered.

In 2009 i did work experience for uni at Bradford and i made a few videos for them with a few other students, took a couple of weeks of slow work, on my macbook. We made a good video, but was extremely simple and if i was given time and a budget or even a beyond basic programme then i could come up with some of the stuff from above.

as someone has mentioned already its spreading it thats the problem, RL is a tight community and as such, often struggles to extend beyond when it comes to advertising etc.

As mentioned, i would love to work in a marketing dpt, at either the RFL or any SL club, because the job just isnt being done right. all of the videos above are simple, bit of film, bit of text, good programme to put it all together with.

Now this is poor, but it was my first attempt EVER at making a video, and as mentioned it's on a basic programme with not many functions, and the only video i had was what was already on the net.

Next up......getting paid well? I somehow doubt it. I was in discussions with the RFL regarding work in London a few years ago. If I had accepted it, I would have reduced my income by over 2/3rds....as much as a fan as I am of the game and Quins RL.....not a chance.
This is the one thing that gets my goat about Quins RL......if they are going to lose 1.5 million a year, then for gods sake at least spend 10% of those losses on a marketing professional. The job above will pay nothing like 33% of the salary it should....if I had to guess, I reckon 40k tops and for that money.....with the list of tasks in the description, you'd maybe get a professional for 1 day a week

Hey.....I'd email them again if I were you and see what the deal is in June. Looking at the number of tasks the successful candidate will be required to do, they may well be looking for either an assistant (20k at a stab) or a replacement by then.
