However, you are right. There's not going to be 100,000 households/people who pay for just rugby league. I'd say that some of them will also be football fans/cricket fans etc and so will be contributing to the rights for them.

I guess that is a very hard thing to prove or disprove, how many people would cancel their Sky subscription (or at least the sports package) if Sky dropped SL/RL? I'd be surprised if their wasn't at least 100k who are motivated to have it because they are RL fans.

My Sky Sports subscription is cancelled when the season/4 nations is finished and restarted when it returns. There are quite a few who do a similar thing so I understand.

I just go watch the amateurs play during the winter months.

There is very little other sport that interests me that I can't find out about from other sources.

Super League going head to head with the sunday lunchtime EPL football game would be crazy. Also I dont support this idea that the Grand Final has to be on BBC. Yes it would be nice but FTA shouldnt get some free pass. Nobody is stopping the BBC bid for Super League but they refuse to pay the going rate. Sky have been great for RL and I have no problem with them keeping all the TV rights although I do want to see them improve their coverage!

Also Super League on ESPN is not an option unless they decide to bring ESPN 2 to the platform. Sunday lunchtime on ESPN is Serie A coverage.

The games don't even get 100k viewers so I doubt 100k people will be that bothered about RL not being on Sky

Personally speaking I always cancel my Sky Sports packages after the Grand Final,they usually ask me if I would like to keep it at a reduced price for a couple of months.I always decline and tell them the only reason I have it is for Rugby League,and have no interest whatsoever in watching hours and hours of Fairyball !!

The Wakefield v Hull game, not exactly a massive draw for people got 104,000 viewers on a saturday at 7.30.
The Wigan v Leeds playoff game got 335,000 viewers.

I think we can safely say that RL games get 100,000 viewers on SKY.

I believe the current ESL deal is worth about 1,170,000 each to the current ESL clubs. This would mean that SKY TV would need to see about 17,000,000 in advertising revenue over the season to see any return on this investment.......if they sho on average 2 games a week that's 54 games, + 6 at MM and another 9 play off games.....or 250k in ad revenue per game. This is without the cost of getting the OB stuff around the country and picking up the tab for wiggies wigs and Stevos new dentures.......I somehow don't think they would be investing this much money for a sport that was getting 100k viewers.......I think the figure they actually get is nearer 500,000 viewers (or at least that's what they will tell their advertisers anyway).

Just so you're aware of the market values associated with RL.......Gillette sponsored the last UK 4 nations at the last minute...the initial price tag was 300k.....they didn't pay that much.

A new TV deal? I suspect that it will be little improved on the current one. With Crusaders and possibly Wakey going into administration over the last few weeks, the RFL will need to assure their principle revenue stream that everything is going to be OK. I would think the best the RFL could hope for is a 3 year deal at maybe 55 more per club.......then ensure that no other clubs go belly up and try to negotiate harder next time around.

Don't forget the cost of filming the 28 Championship matches for free as well
