| ...armchair fans are no good to the game. As I have shown, a combination of attendances, media conditions set by those with their own agendas and TV audiences all count when it comes to TV deals......I mean look at the IRB......all that money BEFORE they sell the TV rights
If you doubt that Union is well represented and rewarded for TV when compared to other sports including League and AFL.....try googling the Oxford v Cambridge boat race TV viewing figures ......toffs they may be, but they aren't stupid
Oh, by the way.....you recently quoted NSW v Queensland Origin attendances......
well try these on for size.
NSW....Population 7,240,000 (estimated 2010)
Q'land...Population 4,500,000 (est 2010)
Ireland (Republic and occupied counties) 5,800,000 (est 2010)
Wales...Population just shy of 3,000,000 (est 2010)
Scotland...poulation 5,194,000 (est 2010)
February 27th 2011....Murrayfield...63,082 Scotland v Ireland
March 12th 2011...Millennium stadium...74,233 Wales v Ireland
Febriary 12th 2011 Murrayfield....60,259 Scotland v Wales
Not bad figures really....but even the soccer mad Italians got 32,000 - 32,000 - 34,000 to their 3 home games this year 99% of the country don't even know it exists in either code......but at least the IRB are growing the game. The All Blacks v Italy filled the San Siro stadium (80,000) last year.....beats the 11k that the roos got in parra for their game v a developing nation like PNG.
BTW.....5 rounds of 6 nations games over 5 weekends achieved 914,000 attended fans...at an average of AU$100 a ticket.......that's AU $91,400,000......or if you prefer, AU$6,100,000 a game....BEFORE TV Rights that are sold to Networks around the world like ESPN shown Live in markets like the USA ....not bad for a sick puppy when compared to the AU$800,000 a game the NRL Billion dollar TV deal will pay
even at AU$45 a ticket.....with an average of 20,000 at a game, AU$1,700,00 per game for tickets AND TV revenue for NRL.......AU$6,100,000 per game for the Union BEFORE TV
...still...what do I know eh. The NRL rules

yeah these figures dont include regional figures which add around 30% more for RL...

sorry this is the latest week :
www.tvtonight.com.au/2011/03/pay ... ek-12.html
so 2 of our games beat the grand final of the A League, an australian WC cricket game
and again the Toyota Cup beat a S15 game
i dont need to post any more of these things you guys get the picture
when i was looking at these ratings closely it used to be :
1. RL - 1.2 million viewres
2. AFL 700,000 viewers
3. RU - 300,000 viewers
4 A League approx similar to S15
around 70% of the most watched shows on Fox Sports are NRL ones
with AFL on Foxsports 1, League on Foxsports 2 and S15 on FS3 all going head to head we come out well in front

| Back on thread.....unless this is now the TV thread
Option 1.
Build an international game that generates Billions of dollars that are then filtered down to club and grass roots level. This includes central contracts where your best players are expected to roll up and play international games regardless of sprained thumbs etc....This option, although having been around for a while is in reality only 25 years old as a professional business, but will raise literally billions of dollars and help prop the game up in countries where it is suffering. This organisation, through the growth of this programme now has the shorter of their games, with less players, running a stand alone profitable world series with 30 countries involved at some stage every year. As a result of this well managed organisation running this shorter game, it will soon be an olympic sport. This shorter but popular game also enables pacific islanders to lay for their countries without being b'stardised so as to play in a made up state comp designed to generate nothing more than TV revenue.
The 15 a side game also has a club competition running in Europe that turns a profit, as well as a state/provincial comp in the south that again commands Attention and generates revenue that is filtered down to grass roots. All of this money is supplemented with an additional wedge of cash that comes from TV.
Option 2.
Build your game up where there is a total of 30 fully professional teams around the world generating 90% of the income (most of which comes from TV deals), and where very little if any of this money is filtered down to grass roots. Somewhere between 50 and 55% of the players in this elite group come from pacific Island heritage......with the WASP or European herritage shrinking more every year.
Now, I am no Donald Trump......but guess which game makes more money and pumps it into grass roots and development and is far wealthier than the other....answers on a post card to
Dally Messenger

Road to nowhere
No-nothing City
somewhere up the creek (and where's my paddle)

No need to cut and paste (unlike the NRL Crusader with the pritstick)...I was given an education by my parents which enables me to think for myself......
Like it or not m4e.....the business model used by the IRB is so far ahead of the NRL/ESL that it is funny. As I posted earlier.....over 16 years (4 RUWC) the IRB will generate 1 Billion USA dollars from the host nations alone. Then, on top of that, they get 100% of the TV Money AND THEN 100% of all merchandise revenue.........and this money is then spent on places like Italy and Argentina....spent getting Union played in US colleges etc.....do you remember the episode of FRIENDS when they played Rugby League? Nope......neither do I, but my late wife had it on DVD...oh...sorry, they were playing UNION
compare that to a 30 privately owned clubs, some of whom are not making a bean (well...a fair few actually) and rely on TV for 80% of their income.......
seriously...that ia not a business model...it's a recipie for disaster

To be frank I couldn't care less about the IRB or whatever union has It doesn't interest me.
If the union get 1billion for the international game, then the NRL is not doing so bad getting 1billion for a national game only played in 3 states, and NZ...

I am a sports fan....first and foremost. Next up, I am a convert to league from Union......I played union all my able adult life....thank christ, because I wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes playing league
What gets me...is the now long departed posse and dally messenger acting like self appoined bully boys.....trying to gang up and get people to just walk away.....they have nothing to say, bring nothing to the table and are generally wind up merchants. Bazza, PHIPPS et al are funny...dally and his crew were trying to be bullies....but the called the wrong person a troll.
As for the NRL getting a billion....congratulations....but that will be for 1,250 games and also 15 SOO games on top.......the IRB will get their billion....and it's a US Billion by the way, for 192 games.......that's the point of me posting it. Care or not, one game is well run, the other isn't. Morally, the IRB are toads...but they are also in business........and they are the ones with the bigger cash flow and bigger reach.
I agree, this is a League board and the majority of my posts on here are league related, but I won't take name calling or attempts to look clever at my expense lying down...as dally should have learnt by now. He's inventing second posters to back himself up for gods sake.....it's sad

PHIPPS likes to try and be funny...sometimes he is, most times he's not, but he is also a RL fan as well as a sports fan. He does get annoying...but he does that on every board (except Crusaders where the 3 posters there just ignore him)........but, and it's a BIG BUT....he doesn't try to bully people. He is a jester at best, but there are ...sorry were posters on here who would gang up to try and win an argument through sheer volume of posts and PM's when they knew they had been beaten. Eeels, Gijot, Old Darling...to name but three all came and went, but dally was always clever enough to just stir it.......not get too involved.
If there is such a thing as Troll...then the tactics employed by dally messenger over the last 12 months pretty much define what one would be...sneaky, devious, nasty, spiteful and petulant.....oh, he has been know to run and tell tales to the mods as well...so I'd better leave it there
This thread will be a cracker when the AFL gets going

Can someone clarify. Is State of Origin not simply a 3 game series between players from the NSWRL and QRL comps.
Are they threfore nothing to do with the NRL as such if that's the case apart from playing first grade in a comp called the NRL. Which basically was the NSWRL and then the ARL.
Not winding up, but can someone seriously clarify? Just wondering if gutterfax needs to include 15 SOO games in his estimations if Origin doesn't classify as NRL games, which they may not.

I honestly wasn't sure myself when I wrote it...that's why I intially seperated them. If SOO isn't part of the deal, then those 3 games a year a worth a few bob because they are the highest ranked sports programmes in Australia I think.....but I believe that they are part of the overall deal.

I would imagine they are as they are the highlight of the RL Calendar, but I think that they are not an NRL product as such. They just contain players who play in the NRL first grade comp.
