| Quote ="BrisbaneRhino"It should be noted that the 'non-international' element primarily relates to potential match-fixing. As we've already seen, cricket has its issues, and soccer may have been caught up in it, not because its a major sport here, but gamblers across the world can understand it and place bets (I also wouldn't underestimate the fact that footballers here in the main also aren't paid as well as AFL/NRL players which potentially could make them easier to target).'"
How do you fix an AFL game? They get points for missing as it is.

It's actually a different article to the one I originally linked too which said they had found a stash of urine in the changing room.
Seems that one links to some story about jam.
EDIT - The urine story is at the bottom.

For all that I'm babbling on about this though, personally I do love it. Sport is narrative to me, and it's as much about the stories as it is about what goes on on the pitch.

| Drugs in sport in my opinion is bad and needs to be eradicated.
Saying that, I'd rather have a scandal about catching people than have a clean record because we don't test.
The sport won't die on this. For a start it sounds like all codes are affected so its not like Union is going to benefit because no one likes League any more.
The cycling issues are a special case because of Armstrong's celebrity status. But even then, Sky as mentioned above are putting a lot of money in, but equally they demand a clean team. They caused part of the stink by making their team test constantly and find some out.
And HTC are making losses at the moment so may not like the idea of investing no matter what happens.
Of course it depends how many are caught. If the whole Aussie team, turn out to be doped up they can still field a team that are not and compete. If one team is seen to be a major offender and all their team are banned, we'd soon have another team take their place.
For me, the way to handle this as a governing body, is to praise the clean ones. Make it clear the world cup will have a major testing campaign and ride the publicity that we can say w are clean when other codes cannot say that.
Time will tell who is found out, and I sincerely hope it turns out to be a few low level players but the fact that Rugby League is the biggest sport down under would mean that the media will hound anyone even suspected so won't be pretty for a while.

| The statement that has been released to the media is causing all sorts of issues in the fact it is tarnishing many sports and Clubs and players unfairly.
They should shut up and present their case with facts before having a press conference.
They have just dragged at least a couple of sports through the mud at the start of their respective seasons without putting out any evidence at all at this stage.
I am sure there will be problems as there are in all sports all over the World but this has been a media Circus so far.

The Vials were apparently in a toilet cistern at a ground that 40 odd teams have used in recent times.
Lost of rubbish will be put in the media before the truth comes out.
I hope the clean Clubs look at taking legal action for the unfair insinuations that have been put forward this week.
You used to be innocent until proven guilty, not seeing much of that so far in this story.

| This news of widespread Australian doping certainly raises huge questions as to the legitimacy of their international results against us over the years. For decades, it had been assumed that GB (and now England) were rubbish in comparison to the superhuman Aussies who handed out all those routine thrashings, but it now appears we were squeaky clean and superbly gifted all along - a successful international dynasty thwarted for years by a serial bunch of organised drug cheats.
It is to be hoped that all of our previous international defeats against Australia are removed from the record books and I would urge the awarders of the Golden Boot to re-evaluate their decisions over the years in order to redress the balance in our favour. Sir Kevin Sinfield can then be recognised as the best player in the world in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012 with a 100% win record against the Aussies in Tests (1 win but 14 losses now scratched from the records) whilst being narrowly pipped by the Worlds Best Winger Ryan Hall in 2011.

not sure about urine, but there was a stack of s**t in wakeys dressing room last weekend
on a serious note, i'm sure that the investigation will have some hard facts that we will get to know about in time. one thing worries me though that is, is this the tip of a worldwide iceberg? are we about to find out that a lot of the sports we love and have grown up with as kids are bent as a nine bob note? or is it on a much smaller scale?

I agree to a point. I just dont think there is the level of 'boundry pushing' or sophisticated systematic use of such drugs in Super League.
I would think that any transgressions in SL would be of more traditional PEDs

| "That's my beef with this - if we've got the drug problems we've had, well, what's the drug agency been doing? We pay them a lot of money to come into our sport. We made a lot of compromises for them to come into our sport. And now they're telling us we've got a problem. I can't detect it, I've got no means to do that. We employ them to do that." - Wayne Bennett

| Being a personal trainer with a particular passion for sports conditioning and knowing several pro strength & conditioning coaches and rugby league players - they have all told me they know first hand that growth hormone use is widespread. Without them telling me its still obvious, look at the huge amounts of muscle mass some players over here have gained in pre season, its just not possible to maintain that throughout the season and have the time and energy to play in and recover from games, but many do maintain it. That's not protein shakes and maintenance strength training, its steroid and growth hormone use. There is no other explanation.

Absolutely right. But... ASADA over here regularly test players in and out of game time, including visits to training, games, etc. They can come anytime, anywhere. If you refuse to give a sample, you are "presumed" to be hiding something.
Here's the current anti-doping policy.

| I was relating to the blanket coverage that all sports are drug using cheats that has been in the Australian media, if they are not. they are match fixing, if not that they are connected to organized crime.
How much Mud can they throw without showing some facts and evidence.
