As a Leeds fan it hurts me enormously but I agree - at least based upon the players I've seen in the flesh. It'd also be a good way to ensure that history isn't rewritten as it'd remind those union-freindly journalists exactly where Edwards was moulded.

Finest/cleverest, that's just your opinion. As good as Murphy was, he isn't that well known outside of RL circles and of those mostly the over 50's. Offiah is generally recognised by many more people but I'd go for the group representation thingy.

I said that ages ago. Would sum everything up about the Challenge Cup and RL at Wembley. The two most iconic images are those two men on their knees.

| If i was Fox i wouldn't want a statue of me at the lowest point of my career, iconic or not it wouldn't be fair to immortalise failure regardless of the poetry of it, besides he's not in the shortlist so move on, it's not happening.

| Martin Offiah was a fantasic talent and player....but what grates on me if he was to be picked is that he is not a "real" RL man if you get my drift. in alot of his interviews he says many times that before Widnes approached him he had little or no knowledge of rugby league

Course it's your opinion and he's not that well known in Aus. If you'd said Mal Reilly, who really is well known down under and considered a great of the game, then you'd have a case but Murphy was one of the best in his era but not the best/cleverest etc of all time, unless that happens to be your opinion. Anyhow, he doesn't deserve a statue to himself. He's got enough of them at home.

| Sounds like a compromise is needed. I'd settle for a statue of Syd Hynes smacking Alex Murphy. That way the wishes of those who love/loathe Murphy would both be satisfied.

Not this Wigan fan !
Murphy is an all time great.
Offiah was indeed an exceptional player, but not in the same league as Murphy.
You have to realise of course, that not too many fans on these forums actually saw Murphy at his best. You have to be getting on in years unforunately.
For what it's worth, I think Edwards should have been on that list.
But the winner for me should have been Jim Sullivan. His records will never be beaten.

| Alex Murphy was a rugby genius. That he's not so well known outside RL circles matters not a jot. He's RL through-and-through to this day and represents the sport in a way that no Union convert ( pre or post League ) can ever do. In the build-up to the millennium The Guardian ( national ) ran a readers' poll for the greatest rugby player of all time and Murphy won it, deservedly.

I was referring to his total length of service to the game. About 40 years at the top level as player, captain and coach.
The fact he captained the first team to win at Wembley in 1929.. He scored the first points at the first Wembley CC final in 1929.
Sullivan still holds the record for the number of kicks in one match - 22 goals.
When Sullivan played we used to beat the Ozzies almost for fun.
www.rugbyrelics.com/SW/sports/rl/sullivan.htm
Then there was his records for the Wigan club;
[iWhen he removed his Wigan jersey for the final time, he had made 774 appearances and amassed 2,317 goals and 4,883 points for the club.[/i

| Well , it is ridiculous that both Fox and Sullivan are not on the shortlist.
Neil played for 23 years 56 to 79 amassing over 6000 points.
He scored 4448 points for Wakefield.
3 Wembley winners medals, man of match in 62, and two championship winners medals.
He also played in successful GB teams scoring 228 points in 29 tests.
It would of been more as he was selected as captain of the 68 Lions , but a groin injury kept him out of that as well as 68 Challenge cup final.
Would he have of kicked the goal brother Don missed ?
Both Jim and Neil are legends of the Greatest Game
