| Quote ="Codarmysaint"This is just a load of crap, perpetuated by your average league fan. The backs in the guiness premiership poo all over the super duper league backs from a massive height. They are faster, stronger and far more skillful, because you see, league is going backwards. The game is just like a huge game of british bulldog where the fittest survive.
Gareth Thomas will tear it up in SL, even at the age of 36 and will be even more embarassment for our game'"
The bit in bold is correct then you go on to make a total hypocrite of yourself by posting the same and more from a Union point of view.
League has been going backwards in the last few years but the signs are now that we are moving forward again. The gap has been closed certainly by Union and I think the influence League coaches have had on this is much to do with it, the lines they run are very much the lines League players have run for a very long time.
I have experience working with both pro league and union players at a top level regards conditioning and I would say that the Union backs generally are more powerful, as this is more a requirement of the game, mainly because they need nothing like the all round aerobic capacity that a League player does. The fitness components are very different and union players can sacrifice aerobic conditioning for anearobic conditioning. League backs are asked to do far more work in a game in every aspect and this has to reflect in their conditioning.
Regards skill level in truth i think the basic levels are again pretty similar but the League lads do everything at a much quicker speed which in my opinion gives them the nod.
Regards pure sprint speed again i think there is little to choose. Union backs are a little more powerful but generally have a bit more bulk again due to the lower need for aerobic training, so generally there is little to chose from both.
Regards Thomas I think he will go well in League, he will not "tear it up" but he will not let anyone down. He is strong lad and his game has always been one of a traditional league player, ie he has a strong carry looks to run the ball when he can and cuts some good angles.
Its a shame we never got him years ago as i genuinely think he would have been a GB international, now though he will put bums on seats, will not let anyone down and will strengthen the Crusaders, which can only be good for the game in Wales.

| I watch union when i can't sleep. Works every time.
It's very generous of the players to start a ruck so fans can go get a pint and go for a pee and when they come back the ball hasn't moved. Just in time to watch "Jonny" boot it over the sticks. HOW exciting

| You really don't know what you're on about do you.
And he didn't play outside centre he played 12 and a hint of ten in certain instances.
Farrell was crocked but he was still a hell of a player

| We have an other sports forum to discuss other sports.
While there's obviously some crossover when discussing a league club signing a player from union, comparative crowds for association football and rugby union in New Zealand isn't even remotely covered by that.
A general warning: we're not going back to the days when the VT, which is a forum for discussing rugby league, was fully of dick-comparing contests talking about RU or Aussie Rules. As we seem to be getting more threads heading that way, I'll be clamping down on them.

personally i haven't seen much of Gareth Thomas as i don't bother with union, so i will reserve my judgement til i have seen him play a game of RL

Quinnell is a smart guy. He recognises that they are two different sports with similar elements. I wish more people would understand that.

I spotted that too, it's the way to go, big name with Thomas, then Powell, then hopefully get some scintillating Welsh backs into the side.

| I've seen him play Union a time or two, and as others have said, five to ten years ago would have been a good time to switch; I think he still can but with limitations. If he does switch, I suspect he'll make a few interchange appearances, then he'll be tried out as a starter.
Good luck to him for having the nerve to try at this stage of his career. It may not be a long one, but I think it could well be a good one. If all it does is stir curiosity amongst possible supporters, it's a good thing - some may even stay!

Makes a change for the boot to be on the other foot. And if they don't want to come, just say they weren't really Welsh anyway. Oh.

| Gabby Logan is a first class idiot.
Now, I would'nt want to mention that it takes a particular sort to rely on your dad's exploits as a footballer to 'make it' in the field of journalism, but perhaps Logan can perhaps do a bit of research into the fine and pround history that our code has when it comes to multicultural matters.
I know this may be too much to ask of Gabby as she gets her leg over with that fella who played on the wing who was the epitome of mediocre, but surely it is not too ask that she remembers which code used to ban its players from playing a particular sport and the 82 (IIRC) year gap between a black player representing the England team (1906-8icon_cool.gif
