| Quote ="Fishermanscap"Err sorry no. When some Trinity idiot let off a flare at Cas a few years ago the club got fined, it wasn't the clubs fault was it, it was twi individuals but thats how it works. Can't just move the goalposts, if that statement he made breaks RFL rules then the club pays the price, whatever that price is.
Frankly its a pee poor bit of behaviour but its surely only a slap on the wrist, lets not blow it out of proportion. The bloke has apologised, he's clearly an idiot as even idiots know that kind of humour (i'm being kind here) is no longer acceptable. It doesn't matter whether in his or your opinion that it's PC gone mad etc etc the fact is society no longer tolerates it and most people are smart enough to accept that, you just can't be too careful.
If I were the RFL I would take another look at this guy before jumping any further into bed with him because that level of crass dumbness does not bode well.'" or even the bottle throwing by the cas fans did for the second time cost the club £40K

| Aside from the fact it's completely unacceptable and racist - what was he thinking saying it?
The lame excuse for an apology after he's been called out about it is just as troubling.
Is this guy fit to run a club in Superleague with or without his boat load of cash? Common sense is obviously in short supply at Toronto.

| I'd say the comment about allowing black people in Swinton is racist, the chap purporting to be an advocate for the Devil in my opinion is attempting to muddy the water with his 'Fat Gets' comment using that phrase could be classed as poor taste but I'm not aware of any historic legal segregation of fat people from thin people. As a former chubby possibly even fat get I had a fair amount of name calling some in banter some as an intended insult but it's not illegal fortunately my fat was wrapped in pretty thick skin. A season visiting Weighchers or as my colleagues called it Fatshifters so no more chubby jokes its baldy ones now.
The Swinton comment is an utter disgrace and the man should be dealt with.

| Dumb comment to make. Apology to the player behind closed doors should have been enough to sort this out. Now it's all over social media and the pitchforks are out.

| I feel like I'm wading into muddy ground here, but without having being present during the conversation, I read the comments as a slight against Swinton as a town. ie. a joke in poor taste that they are ignorant and a bit backwards. It's the kind of thing you might say to a mate as a joke, but it's totally inappropriate to someone you're just meeting in a professional capacity. He should be rightfully embarrassed, but for me the apology is enough.
As someone who is mixed race, who has gone to live games regularly for the last 15 years, I'm amazed to say I've never seen even the slightest bit of racism. I think we're pretty good as a sport for it. Watching the BBC's codebreakers docu I think shows partly why.
If these are the kind of comments we have to - rightfully - discuss, then we're doing ok. I despair when I look at the state of football, where racism is completely ingrained!
Stupid comment by Argyle, I'm sure it won't happen again. Lets move on.

| I'm sure a fine will be on the cards as the RFL rarely misses a chance to gather some coffers for its self, it will also have to be seen that there has been some sort of discipline has been dished out as it leaves a precedence for it to happen again without being penalised, you can't ignore it

So you are interpreting the phrase 'do they allow black people in Swinton' as actually meaning 'ignorant and a bit backwards' an interesting interpretation and appears as insulting as the original remark.

No it’s not regardless of how much you want it too be. Incidents involving multiple members of the fan base is different to one individual within the club who the RFL have the power to punish individually unlike they do with fans.

| Personally I think when a club official breaks the rules in any sense it should be the club that receives a punishment (alongside that individual if needs be). I’d exclude players from that because the vast majority of player discretions are on the field and can be dealt with that way, which also punishes the club.
However, the RFL has already set precedent for club officials in punishing them personally. Be it fines for coaches or for instance with Hull and the doping investigation a few years back.

Most* people are fat because they’re lazy and/or eat too much.
Everyone’s race is fixed. Their ethnicity is their identity. The history of their people is attached to their skin colour. That doesn’t matter what scale of brown they are on the skin spectrum from Northern European “white” to Sub-Saharan African “black” (we’re all a scale of brown really). Any discrimination or prejudice by anyone or any group of people towards anyone else or any other group of people due to their ethnicity/race is just backwards. That way of thinking belongs back in the 1950s, like sexism too.
*some people do have problems with their pituitary gland that makes them gain weight, or even depression that can lead to weight gain. But let’s be honest, people are usually fat because they can’t look after themselves and physical activity and a proper diet is not part of their lives.

“I take full responsibility”
Well, no pal, you’re the one who said it. What a tool he seems!
From when the Greeks used to call Northern Europeans “Barbarians”, to some of the wars over ethnicity that still go on around the world today; racism has always been a problem in human history and it never ends well.
For someone to still be using derogatorily racist slurs or making derogatorily racist comments in 2019, it just shows the lack of education and understanding of human history and a lack of empathy towards other humans.

Maybe it's cultural. Listen to the Aussie cricket commentators they refer to Pakistan cricket team as 'Pakis', something you would never hear in UK.

The line for me is where you cannot change something. So holding prejudices against race/ethnicity, disability, gender or sexuality is wrong. That’s what the Nazis stood against so should tell you all you need to know.

That’ll just be because they won’t have had that word linked to it being derogatory like it was in Britain.
To the Aussies, “Paki” might be as innocent as saying “Argies” or “Afghans” or “Turks”.
They aren’t saying it as a negative.
What Argyle said is not innocent though. He’s voiced a question about whether Swinton allows black people to live/work there.

I still await more of the holier than thou pitch fork brigade to want more blood.
It's a comment on poor taste. That doesn't make him a racist. There are racist comments/actions and racist people.
Racist comments and actions can happen through ignorance (i.e. not realising it's offensive or offending anyone).
Racist people know it's offensive and still choose to do it.
I'm sure many of us have said or done something that has been considered offensive and haven't realised it (or realised how offensive). To do it in a professional capacity is pretty poor, and has been a major error in judgement from David Argyle.
The guy has owned up to it. He hasn't hidden from it. He hasn't pretended he didn't say it or deny it or try and cover it up. He has now followed through with more than an apology and effectively left the club. What more do people want?
The club could now be in peril, but I assume that is what many people wanted anyway.
It's sad, because the RFL could easily have sorted this out had they actually investigated the matter when it was brought up and it wouldn't have had to come to this. It's shocking they didn't and perhaps some other people should be leaving their posts voluntarily for doing nothing when they had the power and responsibility to do everything.

I think the player went too far by posting it on twitter, airing his dirty washing in public, enraging the social justice brigade and ruining a man's reputation. All over a relatively minor issue that was a bit naughty but could have been sorted behind closed doors. Absolutely no need for it.
