| Quote ="robinrovers10"I know Hull KR's stadium might not be the best, but the East Stand has to be the most atmospheric in the English game.'"
An inevitable consequence of poor personal hygiene en masse.
Concrete standing and a tin roof amplify sound but really there is far more than that to make a good stadium.
What suits me is an unobstructed view that provides some cover from the elements and is built to be close to the field. Obviously grounds shared with football clubs tend to be bigger and have better facilities but there are some good smaller grounds as well and a full up stadium looks better than a half empty large one. One style doesn't suit all but keep the fundamentals and you won't go far wrong. Rather like a decent ref, you can concentrate on the game and not notice a good stadium seat (or stand).
Anyway I also think Doncaster is a good template for an RL ground, you could I suppose build up the sides to increase capacity. I also think Leigh have a decent ground suitable for the smaller clubs. If Widnes didn't have that godawful pitch then its quite good there as well. Older designs have had their time. I enjoyed them back in the 70s & 80s but really we have moved on since then.

| Quote ="knockersbumpMKII"TBH I don't see what the fuss is about not being able to stand, the seat gives you a guaranteed amount of space (ok some grounds are worse than others but still), you can also get your 'spot' with a seat more often than not particularly if you're a season ticket holder.
Standing is not much cop for kids, especially so if it's packed and IMHO I still think it isn't ideal from a safety POV. Sure if they're standing at the front but then they are at such a low level it's hard for them to see everything as you're already that much further away from the action at the ends.
I loved standing BITD and when I started going on my own to the Boulevard at the age of 9 I'd stand right at the front on a bit of wall pretty much right next to the speedway gates. I went into threpenny a few times when I was older but it wasn't ideal unless you stood near the front from a viewing POV.'"
Sometimes that's the issue.
Because you're guaranteed a space, you can't move elsewhere into the atmosphere. You can't congregate. If you're stuck in a boring area, unless there are enough seats to move there's not a thing you can do about it. That's why terraces always tend to have a better atmosphere than an all seater stand.

| Location is so important, look at Salford. Parking, transport links, local amenities (pubs etc), doesn't take 3 months to get away from.
A mix of terracing and seating is good, as it gives people a choice. I prefer the way Leeds are doing it with the Southstand with terracing below and seating above.
Bowls over four separate stands.

| Whats up with a field with white barriers on one side, some farmers trailers at one end to sit on, a temp stand for 200 at the other and a bar, gym and 200 seats as a main stand.
That's what you are getting if the Broncos come up. Stacks of viewing variety to support everyone's needs.

| Location is the most important thing. Salford is geographically the closest Super League ground to where I live, but it's far quicker for me to get to and from a home game at Wires because the ground is so close to the train station while it takes ages on the bus from central Manchester to Salford's ground. Huddersfield away is more convenient than Salford away and it's about three times further away. At least the Willows was on the tram route. Leigh hasn't got a train station so they should be excluded from Super League on those grounds alone.
Any ground is fine as long as it's not all seater or doesn't put the away end in a seated section and then charge over the odds on the grounds that you're paying extra for a seat whether you want to sit on it or not. Again, Leigh and their £25 away tickets lose out here. Basically relegate Leigh and insist Salford move into FC United's ground.

| I don't understand how anyone can say a ground with restricted views due to stanchions, and one end that is crumbling and roofless child possibly be even thought of as the best design for a stadium!
When Leeds made the Carnegie Stand, they did have knocked down the Western Terrace and moved the whole pitch to. They could have had a big board there are a screen, then make the Carnegie stand bigger and house away fans in part of there.

Clubhouse and bar was probably the best we've been to on our travels too.
Widnes used to be brilliant too but recently always closed when we visit.

You clearly haven't spoken to anyone Leeds City Council planning department - the apparently shocking size of the Carnegie Stand towering over St Michael's Lane was one of the great challenges in securing planning permission for the South Stand redevelopment.
Fortunately by the end of October there will be no more obstructed views at Headingley and in 18 months time Leeds will be reaping the financial rewards of owning a new, shiny money-generating machine which will fund future generations of Sinfields and, maybe one day, a roof over the Western Terrace

Leeds desperately need to rebuild the North Stand, with a double decker all seater and proper leg room for the 21st century. At the moment the North Stand is a disgrace.
As for the Western Terrace, what is needed is a double decker with all seating above and a standing terrace below, and yes a roof over the top.
Then with a new North Stand and West Stand Leeds might attract the 25,000 + crowds that a city of 800,000 deserves.

'" The North Stand is being demolished in October. Unfortunately Leeds have in my view over-done the size of the corporate venue inside its replacement and the seating capacity of the new stand will actually be lower than the existing one (a capacity reduction offset by the seats in the South Stand).
FWIW there is no other club in the world who has even tried to develop a stadium on this scale (the three stands will have cost £25m over 12 years by the time its done) without any external funding from a council, bolt-on to a planning consent or from the sale of their old ground. Leeds are doing this themselves and it is no easy task.

| One often unappreciated aspect of what makes for a great stadium is the ability to circulate, and the use of communal areas. Many of the stadiums which are considered to have the best experience allow fans to circulate within the stadium (Suncorp, Allianz/SFS, Headingley - and Central Park in the past). It really contributes to the atmosphere of a stadium and I would argue it's the main reason why seated stadiums often feel so soulless (as evidence - look at Wembley which typically has quite a good atmosphere despite being all-seater - it's very easy to circulate under the stands).

The redevelopment of Central Park is what knackered Wigan financially in the early 90s iirc.

While Leeds do and will own the West, Carnegie and new South Stand, we will not own but lease the new North Stand, a concern among some.

How long will it take you to pay back the £18M+interest (due to you using the £5M Hethrington says you have in the bank), 30 years? I know eventually it'll all be yours debt free but that is a wedge of borrowing seeing as your (well rather the Football, cricket and Athletic club which own Leeds Rhinos) posted a pre-tax profit of £371k (impressive in RL circles). Even with increased revenue with a new shiny money generating stand you're going to be paying back that loan for a very, very long time.
God knows how YCCC are going to fund their share, even with the championship winning money, ECB payments, International and domestic income they posted a £3000 surplus, the first for years and are still paying £700k/year in interest on outstanding debts. I know they need to have the improvements or they'll lose the internationals which would basically mean YCCC going under.
I hope it works out and your fans get what they deserve.

| One of the best grounds I've watched RL in was Tynecastle in Edinburgh (Heart's ground) - London v Bradford on th road fixture. it's all-seater, but very steep, so you get a good view from above, but still close to the pitch. Not sure building regs would allow it now.

| Imagine Wire's ground on a 65000 scale...
Like Manchester City's old Maine Road, Charlton Atheltics' and Chelsea's grounds way back when, the HJ or Leeds' ground - the big vocal standing terrace along the side of the pitch makes for the best kind of stadium
The posh stand on the opposite side
A normal seated terrace for home fans at one end
And the away section behind the other end

| I like that big stand opposite the away end at Headingley. Terraced at the front with seats above. I've only been on that terrace once when we lost to Hull KR in the CC semi but if I was a Leeds fan I'd stand there every game. I've never liked our South Stand or theirs.
