| At least the game will have more match officials coming forward based on the posts so far.
Looking good.

This. There's too big a variance between the decisions. Personally I thought red (going on recent decisions) for the first one (and I'm 95% sure it would've been a red in a regular league game) but I wouldn't have minded it being a sin bin and the same for the second one. You can't jump into tackles with an outstretched arm like that.

You know what, I've panned the refs recently for their lack of game savy and their inability to avoid the temptation to become the no.1 talking point in games. Thaler did brilliantly tonight in letting the game flow, making decisions only when a team was genuinely disadvantaged and not just being pedantic and trying to take centre stage.
I also thought his handling of the two high shots was great as well. The first was reckless and could have seen a yellow, but the second was nothing, just a penalty. He did really well to avoid ruining the game with a red card, most referees would have bowed to the baying crowd and the embarrassing reaction of the Warrington players.

| Based purely on my own personal views I'd have gone yellow for first and penalty for the second.
However, based on recent decisions - and all we ask for is consistency - it surely had to be at least yellow, possibly even red for the first, though I still don't think the second was too bad and a penalty probably correct, a yellow would have been a stretch. That said, Marshall showed a bit of his grub side a few times.
Overall Warrington played superbly for long spells but I think the raise in intensity eventually told - St George never eased off and capitalised on every lapse. Physically there was little between them, but as others have said the decision-making in the halves was the main difference.
What a shame we're talking about the ref again, but Thaler's decision-making process is baffling at times, he seems to overcomplicate matters and look for a reason not give the obvious decision. Should've given that one easy yellow card and I don't think anyone would have had a problem. And that rip on Atkins at the end - surely a second look wouldn't have hurt?
Whatever, very enjoyable game.

| Personally, i wish all games were reffed like that, i wish that was the bench mark, people will disagree but i preffered it, reminded me of the 80's.
Penny didn't make a meal of it, he jumped straight up, if he'd stayed down and play acted then i think the ref has to give it a long hard think, KP just getting straight up made it a hell of a lot easier for the ref.

| I imagine if Thaler saw that first one again he'd reconsider his decision. It looked a red to me but real time is difficult. Other than that though I thought, once again, he demonstrated why he is one of the best referees in the league. Just compare his clarity, decision making, general error rate and player handling with James Child.

| As a neutral thought the game was reffed ok. I might have a different opinion if it was my team involved but the game was a good game to watch without too much ref involvement

| First high shot is a yellow minimum, poor technique and extremely dangerous/wreckless. The marshall tackle is just a penalty, his arm clearly comes of the ball then off the shoulder into the neck.
If I was TS I'd be more bothered about the laying on and flopping in the ruck and the amount of grapple tackles. SGI took advantage of only one referee in the game.

Games this weekend are supposed to be played under superleague rules .......................................... SuperLeague rules with the caviot from "on high" that the first choices players need to be out on the field for as long as possible for the image of the game.
Joel Monaghan did an interview after the game and confirmed that he spoke to the ref about the (lack of) penalty count in the first high and that Warrington were not smart enough when it became clear what the ref was letting go to change their play. www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/spo ... rt_enough/
With the extra 24 hours to review the video etc, Wigan must be rubbing their hands on glee ahead of todays game.

Perhaps because that one was reckless, from behind, and caused concussion while the 2 last night was not and did not.
I was not impressed with the 'sportsmanship' shown by the Warrington players who patted on the back, shoulders and head of the opposition player who knocked on in the tackle. It was done quite ferociously and it was surprising there was no reaction.
Tony Smith doesn't have a very good record against Australian sides, does he?

| Penny jumping up, although very sporting has no bearing on the decision surely. If he had lay on the floor with a broken jaw would Thaler have seen the tackle differently?
The Aussies are clamping down on head incidents due to a couple of serious injuries last year most notably the Newcastle player who broke his neck.

I thought the same, very poor. Although I did laugh when Sims did it and then knocked on himself in the next tackle. It was disappointing that no one patted him on the head.

| You can't be sportsmanlike v the Aussies. Their play and behaviour don't allow it. You need to get up in their faces and treat them like dirt because if you don't they will to you. They will push every single rule to the maximum, unfortunately our refs let them get away with it instead of reffing like they usually do.
v the aussies you need to smack em harder than they smack you and not make daft mistakes. Those daft mistakes, combined with a different refs interpretation on high tackles and holding down, is what lost it for Warrington.

| The first one was a red in any other circumstance - he jumped into it with his arm outstretched and were it not for Penny's quick reactions and athleticism, he could have been seriously injured. The second was fairly typical Marshall - a lazy arm on a player who had him beat - penalty.
More annoying was the rather obvious message that referees for this series have been told to stay out of things; SGI were allowed to flop, grapple and slow the ptb down to such an extent that Wire were unable to play. The rip on Atkins was a criminal miss - it would have taken 3 seconds to have a look and make the right call.
That said - it was great to watch as a neutral and Wire didn't let themselves or SL down; good start to the series and far from the blow-out that some people had predicted.

| but aren't all those things you mention bren2K, things that are deemed 'fair game' in SL games?
most teams try and stop others getting a quick play the ball-Warrington being one of the biggest culprits recently, though most teams do it.
the one-on-one ball steals-again, Warrington are experts at getting away with this, 2 instances in last years play off game spring to mind where the ball was clearly ripped out by Warrington hands but knock ons were given.
i'm not knocking Warrington over it, i'm just saying it's all very well saying they were victims of harsh refereeing because of the opponents, but every team uses these tactics every game in super league to gain an advantage.

did you see how penny landed?! you think tha wasnt reckless last night!?!? jesus H christ. id hate to play against you and you were in a reckless mood...
the only reason it didnt cause an injury is because of luck. you cant rule on a tackle based on the injury incurred. you have to base it on the tackle alone. and that was reckless.

| I'm going to join the minority here and say that I didn't think either were that bad, and penalty sufficient was the right decision for me.
Both were desperate 'grabs' - yes they were high and around the neck, but neither was malicious, both had open hands, not clenched fists, neither were stiff arms. They were both a result of the defender in 'no mans land' and in 2 minds, making a desperate lunge and grab. Marshall was apologising before the tackle was even complete.
They looked spectacular, which is why I think people are foaming at the mouth, but neither tackle posed a serious risk, it was just a grab and the spectacular falls were due to momentum, not the vigour of the tackle.
A card for either would have been harsh and would have ruined the spectacle. For once, I thought the game was reffed brilliantly. (Bar the Atkins 'knock on')

Being 'outclassed' by the current England stand-off is a lot different to being anonymous. How many current SL 6s are as good as Gareth Widdop?
