Makinson - 12 tries in 10 SL games and 2 tries in 1 CC game. Total - 14 tries in 11 games.

Hall - 10 tries in 9 SL games and 2 tries in 1 CC game. Total - 12 tries in 10 games.

Makinsons a good player, good to watch. Not in the top tier of wingers in this country in my opinion, but a good player none the less.

Plus Hall scored 3 against the mighty London, who we haven't played yet, and another hat-trick against the in-form Bradford Bulls . . . . .

That's not to say Makinson is better than Hall, just that I think Makinson's tries haven't been on a plate against the easy beats so far this season - he is playing very well indeed.

Needs to carry on current form to even have a sniff of international honours though, as pointed out there are players in front of him in Hall, Briscoe, Charnley and perhaps others too.

I'd agree Hall and Briscoe are currently in front of him but the Josh Charnley of 2014 is certainly not.

I wasn't sold on him in his first couple of seasons, but he seems to have really come on. That said, his finishing is really good, but the rest of his game isn't anywhere near the standard of guys like Hall or Briscoe yet. He is another to add a growing list of exciting wingers though.

People do get a little overexcited about him diving in at the corner though. It's smart finishing, because if you get your feet off the floor it makes it really hard for the defender to do anything. But the skill involved isn't as great as some would have you believe. Hell I've seen Liam Colbon score one this year.

The scrum half at Hull is Harry Tyson Wilson. I don't like to overhype youngsters before they've even broke into the first team, but he's a good as anyone I've seen at his age in this country.

It requires much more in the way of of determination than skill. I'm not putting the kid down at all, I just object to people saying how amazing it is, they look a lot more than they really are. I could probably find an example of all the good Superleague wingers scoring try's like that.

The changes to the rules regarding the corner flag has made spectacular finishes in the corner a lot more common. It's funny because had the rules changed a couple of years earlier Saints would probably have won the 2009 GF. It's great to watch but it's not as difficult as some make it out to be. Damian Blanch scored better try than anything I've seen from Makinson a few years ago.

I wouldn't say Makinson has been piling on the timber like there was no tomorrow.

In terms of skills

Makinson has a nice little kick that he puts in too. Won't be on his try scoring clips, but shows an awareness of how to progress the team forwards when he has run out of space.

Not just a hoof and hope a nice little deft touch with the inside of the boot.

Nonsense. If he didn't need to do it then he wouldn't. See his two tries on Good Friday for example.

Bias? More like your paranoia pal. I've no problem praising Makinson* or any other player and do so whenever it's warranted, I just happen to disagree with you on that try.

This comes through in the many posts. Just because we praise someone, doesn't mean we're saying he's better than anyone/everyone else. England has plenty of good Wingers - Briscoe and Hall(and BJB), Makinson and Swift, McGilvery and Broughton, Lineham, Charnely and Burgess - the list goes on.
Just because one of them does good things, doesn't mean the rest are any less capable.

I can remember that. Two men on him, all of his body in touch and still managed to get his arm wrapped around the post to score. I like Makinson, he's a great finisher, I just don't think he has as much about him as Hall, Briscoe, Lineham or Charnley. But he's young and can only get better.

It's just the usual hype you get in all sports.

In a few months it will be someone else, it's also perceived hype. We've been on TV a lot recently. Once we are off the box, someone else will be deemed to be getting too much media exposure.

Who actually cares whether you find it skillfull or not? Skill in scoring a try doesn't win you rugby league games.

Effective finishing does win you RL games and that's what it is: effective.
