Of course not! They remember the last 15 or so years well, being propelled from the bottom of the table to yearly title/cup contenders on ambition alone.

| People go on about Moran as though he bank rolls everything which is a massive insult to Steve Broomhead & Andy Gatcliffe, I admit he's a safety net and there for the little extras in life but if Moran walked tomorrow Warrington Wolves would be in good health and sustainable and profitable.
Franchising/Salary cap was in a nutshell the holding back of successful clubs so that the likes of Wakefield and Castleford could catch up.
Teams now able to spend at cap
Wire, Wigan, Leeds, Saints, FC, Huddersfield, London (yes really), Widnes, Catalan and Salford.
10 out of the 14
Now people say that not all the club's make money but if they could bring in the likes of SBW, Inglis, Thurston and Cronks then you're increasing your pulling power, you'll bring the fans you bring in more money.
So Wakefield/Castle have ambition, show us, show me where it is (Cue pictures of fantasy stadiums and Council run facilities)
I love the fans, I love the club's but the people running them 'just make do'

| a salaray cap isn't designed just to stop a club going bust, it's to maintain a more even/level competition. The Americans nail it, but only by giving all the power to the central organisation who are bl**dy good at what they do commercially.
It doesn't work in UK sport, we have no interest in changing our sporting culture enough to make it work. All the power's with the big clubs and they'll never let it go.
Just scrap it and move on.

| It's all well and good saying they'd be sustainable now, but do you really think if Simon Moran hadn't come along all those years ago that you'd still be in the same situation?
I'm not trying to take a swipe at Wire here, they've done very well for themselves and are now in a good, stable position - it took money and a good strategy/business plan to get there though!
Unfortunately ambition is a lot easier to have than to fulfill.

You are respectfully talking out your backside. If you think Steve Gill is content to make do, I dare you to go ask him? Go on! Turned around a failing business, reviewed all deals and renegotiated them to bring in more commercial revenue ever before.
On top of that, we are spending the basic cap this season. It may not be the cap with bells, whistles and extras but the basic cap, yes, of 1.65m.
Cas are moving forward after a period of stagnating but your belittlement and naivety is rife im rugby league without true facts of the situation. I accept that to the casusl viewer it seems like promises with no result but, please, do research before making such comments. Cas have done everything possible to get a new stadium but we do not have a rich council nor do we have a rich owner. We are at the whim of other people, which in the current climate is not likely to move fast.

What does cas bring to the league that other teams don't?
I'm a big fan of cas, your win at the very first game at the jjb in the playoffs in (I want to say 2002) was an absolutely fantastic game to watch. But we've seen teams come into the league after cas, and then catch up both on and off the pitch, and have either overtaken, or look likely to. Whilst the gap hasn't seemed to close between those above cas and yourselves.
Like I say, I say this in the politest possible respect, sometimes the harsh questions need to be asked though.

The "Americans nail it" simply because there is no other place the players can go and play NFL or Baseball at a higher level, they have no competition from other countries to keep their star players. Every kindergarden, pre -school, high school, college, sat and sun community sports clubs all play the damn sport so they have unlimited supplies of fresh talent entering the market. Notice how the system fails at Association Football because there is pressure from other countries and the game is not played to a great extent ..........
By having a cap low enough for poorly funded teams to try and compete on an equal level it forces players to seek employment elsewhere, NRL or Union. It also shows the sport in a bad light and this also turns investors away, unfortunately in the UK there is greater competition from other sports chasing the TV rights and sponsors money.

| Quote ="bewareshadows"If anyone read part of the article it would show that you could increase the SL salary cap by x 3 and we would still be behind RU.
So is anyone suggesting that paying 3 times the amount of money we already do for the same players (as those who follow the money will still play RU or NRL as their cap is higher), is going to improve the game???
Will paying John Wilkin 3 times his current wage make him a better player, will it pull in more fans to pay this bill?
I'm not actually a fan of the cap as I think it does little to manage clubs over expenditure. But this false economy of thinking that just paying more will solve anything is crazy.
Let Salford spend £1billion a year, they will have the best team by far, but the 10,000 fans they may get will still not cover the wage bill at it's current level.
We have to increase revenue before we can increase expenditure.
Give me a break even rule any day and allow those who want to throw money away to do so. Now some little clubs like Warrington and Salford have caught up. Some of their fans are wanting to spend even more to see how quickly they can go bust. I say let them and watch the fans drip away when after a few years splurge the bills come in and the revenue can't match the outlay.
It's Wigan all over again, they had the best team for years and years and years, but even their far larger fan base could not support the outlay. Same as Bradford, Saints etc etc.
Increase revenue and then pay what ever you like to match that increased revenue, but not beyond.'"
15-a-side football have much bigger squads, so obviously their wage bill is going to be much higher, they have 45 to 50 in their squads. SL cap should be slightly higher with 2 marquee players not included on the cap.

| I can't possibly imagine why Koucash would want the cap increased.... what a shock! Oh, and also, I'm baffled why clubs like Wigan, Leeds and Warrington would want a bigger cap... shocking behaviour.
It's almost like those clubs with tonnes of money burning a hole in their pocket want to spend it... I mean, surely increasing the cap will make SL a far more evenly competitive league... Teams like Wakefield, London, Bradford et al will be able to develop and grow by spending MORE money that they (don't) have.
[size=50"sense the tone"[/size
Lets put this stupid salary cap business to one side.... you could have a cap of £50 million each year.... you'd still only get the same teams buying players... they'd just have less money to develop themselves off the field.
Until rugby league in the UK recognises its place in the sporting spectrum and actually does something about it (other than harp on about how great it is to itself in the mirror)..... we're always going to lose the best players to RU or the NRL.
SL in England is the equivalent to MLS in the world of football/soccer.. I'd love to see our sport improve, but the issue isn't the salary cap, its that the sport is marketed and shown on TV as a cheap version of RU.

That's not true though, there's global competition in some of their sports and they still succeed, particularly ice hockey which has a number of big leagues in Europe/Russia, but still NHL dominates due to the structuring of the sport and the power and commercial ability of the governing body.
We're stuck in the past over here. That's why the Aussies copy the American pro leagues and not UK pro leagues with what they try to achieve in the NRL.

Fair question and I'd respond with this.
We haven't brought much to the table over the last few years, however, prior to our relegation we have always been a competitive side. Even after our relegation we were perhaps unfortunate to go back down in 2006 (who knows where we'd be now without that second relegation), but we bounced back made the play-offs and the Challenge Cup Semis.
We've had a bad couple of years - even our fans recognise that. Despite that we've brought through a number of young players that are now plying their trade at other clubs, as well as a number of players in our own squad. We always seem to take a fair few away from home too. At the same time we've tried to reduce our reliance on overseas players to develop our own and not using exemptions to try and bring more in.
Barring the last few seasons, our crowds have always been reasonable with potential to improve further: we have a decent, loyal fanbase.
Also, we're one of only a few sides to have actually turned a profit over the course of the last 5/6 years. We've never been into administration, we don't grossly overspend.
You could claim stadia as an area we fall down significantly and that's holding us back both on the field and off it. However, that is something we've tried to rectify even spending money off our own back to get planning permission to get us to a stage where we can try and build a new stadium. Alright we have nothing to show for it but just think about the six figure sum invested for PP; had that have been used on improving the business ahead of facilities there would have been outcry. We were in a catch-22 situation that we could only win if a stadium came off.

| Quote ="Wire Yed"Forget it, as long as clubs like Wakefield and Castleford have a say, that's clubs with zero ambition btw, then it won't happen.'"
I am sure that I am not the only Wire fan who would wish to disassociate themselves from this pompous, patronising pile of poop.
I totally agree with those contributors who remind us that, on more than one occasion, Warrington RLFC has been in danger of folding and we were selling our best players to survive. What a short memory some people have.
With regard to the argument that we would be in a strong position even without Simon Moran, I can only say that people argued that when Ossie Davies ran the club. We were soon in trouble when he pulled the plug and, in saying this, I do not wish to demean the excellent job the present board are doing in running the club.
It appears to me that very few of the top clubs could succeed without some form of extra financial backing over and above the revenues they generate.
If the two clubs mentioned were able to hold on to the local players they produce, they would be a match for every club but the finances of the game are such that their best players inevitably move to richer clubs in order for the clubs to balance the books and for the players to achieve success. Super Benny is a prime example. A Wakefield lad who has been one of our best players for a number of seasons and there are plenty more.. That is why I think, for us to have a competitive league, we need a strictly enforced salary cap.
However I don't think this is achievable with a toothless league executive being undermined by the self interest of the richer clubs. It is this self interest that is killing the so called Super League because as long as the likes of Wakefield and Cas are struggling, Rugby League hotbeds that have produced legends of the game, then IMO Rugby League will struggle.

Homegrown players only count at £100k maximum, so if you develop superstars, you can pay them what you want. So at saints we have Roby counting as £100k but he's probably on at least 3 x that

Pompous patronising pile of poop?
No mate, not towing the pc, we're all friends we aren't allowed to criticise anymore nonsense, look at us we used to be poor blah blah.
I don't have a short memory at all and we had a lot of clever, intelligent people who worked us out of the poop.
Wakefield are bouncing from one disaster to the next but we can't critise them? Why?
Oh they produce players, they have a great history blah, SO WHAT?
People rip London to spreads and you all collectively nod your heads in agreement yet turn on a Northern club at your perile, say something about a northern club and all the, we need to stick together nonsense comes out.
Wakefield have been loaning players, not paying wages on time, signing players who leave at the 11th hour because they can't guarantee them a wage.
If I'd substituted Wakefield for London all you here is "disgrace, embarrassing, kick them out". What's any different?
So answer me this and answer it honestly are Castleford and Wakefield NOT holding us back? Just answer that question with a simple yes or no
