| Not that for one minute I'm saying the RFL are going to turn Odsal into the kind of stadium Odem is suggesting, but in terms of logistics it's pretty ideally placed, right next to a major motorway and away from a city centre, with hotels aplenty in the vicinity.

The stadium already meets the current criteria, therefore it changes nothing.

I too would have preferred the RFL to buy a ground made from portacabins with an excellent road network connecting it to the surrounding terrace houses.

Yes, it's very amusing isn't it?
I have nothing against the Bulls, but as a supporter of club in a similarly 'evocative' stadium that we no longer own, thanks to finanical difficulties and the vaguaries of an unhelpful council (sound familiar?) you'll understand that I feel a touch aggrieved.
Fortunately for the RFL, they don't have to justify or explain themselves to anyone in any meaningful way, because I don't think they'd be able offer any credible explanation as to how they decide who to bail out and who to allow to go to the wall.

I can understand you've feeling a tad p!ssed off. It was the dry sarcastic response that made me chuckle.
The details are still a little hazey as to the exact nature of this deal.

| Absolutely disgusting they can do this. Do they step in to help Wakefield? or to help Castleford or the many other teams who are in financial difficulty?

Apparently so. I think it is perhaps wise to see what the long term plan is before getting too carried away.

| i think if they re concreted the place, put up a roof like at don valley on the 3 sides, had better toilets and food facilities, flatten the pitch it would be quite a decent stadium

| So the RFL do a deal that helps a member club, and will almost certainly ultimately profit the RFL, and people complain?
It's true that the biggest detriment to our sport is the fans.

That's not the point, really, though is it? The point is why do this for Bradford when there are numerous other clubs struggling with ageing premises that have not had the same assistance.
They could have made up the difference to Saints who lost over a million quid on Knowsley Road thanks to the economic downturn.
They could have bought Castleford's stadium off them so they could move into their new place.
They could provide Oldham with a decent place to play so that they wouldn't keep having to endure thefts and vandalism.
In fact, there are a host of other stadia that the RFL could have bought or invested in which would result in the team playing there being able to continue. But the RFL hasn't stepped in.
They shouldn't have stepped in at Odsal either. It compromises the RFL.

| The RFL invested in a stadium in North Wales recently, that doesn't fill me with confidence about the future of at least one of the parties involved in this deal

| If they have paid a bargain price and are serious about developing a ' national home ' in a similar vien to twickenham? , then fine, if this is just to save a member club? , oh dear

What land would they have owned in return for the million quid?

That's not a parallel - they would have nobody to rent the stadium too like they do in this instance.
Quote ="SaintsFan"They could provide Oldham with a decent place to play so that they wouldn't keep having to endure thefts and vandalism.'"
They're not a charity - they must see something in this long term. I'm not sure many people with much sense would buy a stadium for Oldham and wait for the cash to flow in from rent . . . . .
Quote ="SaintsFan"In fact, there are a host of other stadia that the RFL could have bought or invested in which would result in the team playing there being able to continue. But the RFL hasn't stepped in. '"
It's difficult to see what is going on here until we get the full facts, but it's likely to be a commercial proposition for the RFL whereby they can buy some land and get Bradford to finance it through rent. I'd be surprised if they were investing in the Bulls for charity's sake. There will be a reason and I'm sure that reason is in the game's best interests and makes commercial sense for the governing body.
Quote ="SaintsFan"They shouldn't have stepped in at Odsal either. It compromises the RFL.'"
I don't think so, it shows they are willing to think outside the box if a commercial opportunity arises that may benefit the game.
To the upset Wakey fans - I see your point (although it's far from a direct parallel) but the brutal truth is that losing the Bulls would impact the game and its value to broadcasters far more than losing Wakey. All IMO of course.

| Quote ="Odem"At the end of the day RL doesn't have a home whereas all the other top sports in the country do.
Football - Wembley
Rugby Union - Twickenham
Tennis - Wimbledon
Cricket - Lords
Golf - St Andrews
Athletics - Olympic stadium
Motorsport - Silverstone
Many minor sports will now have a home as part of the Olympic legacy.
Our sport needs something to own. Somewhere to play our big games. Keep the finals at Old Trafford and Wembley because it works but we need a semi-final venue we won't have to pay rent for, a finals day venue we won't have to pay rent for, an international venue we actually own as a sport. Somewhere we can rent out for concerts and other events, the place could potentially make a tidy profit for the RFL. Most of the profit for the RFU comes from Twickenham.
Stick a fancy roof all around Odsal, do the place up, give it the things it needs to be a classy modern day venue along with the old fashioned RL style venue. It would look like nothing else in the UK.'"
Its just that easy isnt it. Dont factor in any costs what so ever, lets just have these fantasies that Odsal will be amazingly transformed into a world class venue. Odsal is nowhere near the standard needed for premier games and it will take alot of money (that isnt there) and time to change that. Great deal for Bradford though.
