| Quote ="dally messenger"ingis to souths is a good deal for them, but im not sure his signing will make them win the competition, hes only a centre, and an inconsistant one at that
playing for the storm and the maroons, teams which can carry his inconsistancy is one thing, playing at a club which hasnt won a comp sice 1971 and where hes the main go to man, thats very different
hell be blamed for all their losses, much more expectation whilst at the storm he was part of the fab 5
champion is a very talented player and will kill it in a team like the storm
have a look at mat king in the storm and then what hes done at wire'"
I think Souths will be around the top 4 for sure as long as they dont get crippled with injuries like they did last year.
Inglis wont win them a comp but he'll certainly gives them a better chance of doing it. The problem they'll have still IMO is the spine of their side, FB is massively important to any side and Wesser isn't in the top 10 FB's in the NRL. The halves are hit and miss, Sandow and Sutton, can be great one week and dire for the next 3 so they need to improve their consistentcy and improve their game, especially Sandow. They need to keep Isaac Luke fit all year aswell, he's massively important to them and they really missed him when he got injured, he's up there with Farrah and Smith for sure as the best 9's in the NRL.
That's there main weakness IMO, the FB and the halves but you just never know. The Dragons won it last year with an average 7 and 9, Hornby and Young.

im a fan of sandown and sutton is ok
the big problem for me is their forward pack doesnt live up to expectations, other than burgess
wesser is old and slower than he used to be but hes not that bad

| true, there is a reason why Melbourne went all out to keep their world class 1, 7 and 9. The modern game is built around them positions and without really classy players in those positions a GF is unlikely.

i dont think souths will make the gf but its still a good deal for them
theyll improve on the field, building up to a gf in the next 5 years, depending on who their new coach is
and the inglis signing will add to crowds and season tickets as well. souths will cover his salary via increased crowds

| salary recovery isn't an issue as all clubs are paying the same in total, its how much of the cap you spend on one player and what that leaves you to sign around them that makes the Champion deal for Melbourne a decent one.

<whoosh>
inglis will help souths make a bigger profit
there are loads of things outside the salary cap clubs can spend their money on
heck russel might even like to make more money from them
souths have a long term goal of 20,000 season ticket holders and 30,000 members so the publicity of gis signing helps them do this

theres many ways to win a comp
we won it off our no mistake forwards getting field position then we strangled our opponents out of the game
darius is one of the most talented fullbacks in the nrl imo, and hes just getting better
remember it was nathan fien who made the big difference at 9. without him we dont win
i still dont rate hornby but the broncos won a comp with shane perry so it can happen
hornby plays to the best of his abilitites and with nathan fien chippin in its a great combination

imagine what bennett could do with the talent at souths
i never thought coaches could make that much difference, now ive changed my mind completely
bennett took an average side on paper, designed the game plan good for them and made them believe in themselves
bennett leaves and we dont make top 4

You may not have meant anything to the contrary, but I rate Boyd as top class. Add Soward to the halves and the only ordinary position is Young at hooker.
Top fullback and class in the halves. Add arguably the best forward pack in the comp and some good backs and you've got the Canberra Raiders 2011.
I'm gonna see if Doust can print our t-shirts for October.

| I should have put more in my last post as i do actually rate Boyd massively. It was intended at Hornby and Young, i dont know why i put Boyd.
Boyd is massively important to the Dragons, i didn't think he did enough in attack when he first joined but since then he's improved more than most and sets up alot of tries for the Dragons, doesn't score many for a quality FB but sets loads up and is dangerous on kick returns, also makes more metres than most aswell.

I'd agree with that.
Raiders will be exciting to watch again and Orford will be important especially with Campese being out injured. Consistency is key for any side looking to make the top 4 and the Raiders can beat the Dragons one week then lose to the Cowboys the next. Hopefully they can keep everyone fit and have a good crack at it, i hope they go well as i like watching games involving them.

yeah good point on the raiders lack of consistancy
still think if they get a good run with injuries and get a winning streak going you never know with them
but like penrith and the roosters, theyll have much more pressure o n them this year vs last, wont be flying under the radar
some teams dont handle that pressure well eg parra last year
expect storm to bounce back well from last year and tigers and eels to go better than last year as well
with the dragons and maybe manly, thats where i see the gf coming from
dogs to have a much better year as well, top 8 for sure, maybe top 4
wont surprise me to see the panthers miss the 8 and roosters miss the 4
penrith fluked last year, this year will show them as pretenders or prove me wrong as the real deal

Manly in the GF? srsly? Why?
Dogs have an excellent pack at full strength (depth is questionable). HUGE question marks over their halves though. If they can fire, i'd perhaps agree with your assessment. Until then, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them miss the 8.
Don't know why so many people are writing Penrith off. A team with Lewis, Coote, Civo, Gordon, Jennings and now Earl, are always going to be a threat.
