Normally the only thing to cause a shutdown at the HJ is when they yet again fail to order in the right amount of booze (see annual thread on this topic on Warrington forum).

Sky said later that that was the reason people weren't allowed back. Keeping it closed because of the smell of smoke had me wondering what they'd have done in years gone by when we all watched through a thick haze of tobacco smoke - remember looking round the stands at night games with all the sparks as people (including me) kept lighting up?

I thought that the situation was dealt with very efficiently. It shows just how good modern stadia are at coping with such circumstances. The whole stand was evacuated in minutes and the fire which, going by the amount of smoke it produced, seemed to be quite serious, and was dealt with very quickly too.

All-in-all we can be very thankful that this happened at the Geri Halliwell.

It does make you wonder whether there might be a little firebug amongst the Halifax supporters. This sort of thing rarely happens and now it has happened twice in a month to the same fans.

I was there as well , and it was handled quite efficiently , although when they announced that for safety reasons they would be moving the crowd from the West stand to the East, they all trooped across the pitch leaving the poor lone Skysports camera man all alone in the stand, I suppose his safety wasnt THAT important,!!

I quite liked it when he was pretending to waft all the smoke away!

I was at the bar when the evacuation started so actually left the ground to the outside. When they let us back in there was still plenty of smoke in the bar and toilets area and it smelt like a firework / flare.

There's little ventilation and they had some sort of fan trying to get the smoke out.

Not true, there was the cameraman, plus 4 or 5 other photographers inc myself.

Id be more concerned about the man currently fighting for his life.

OK im sorry i didnt mention the photographers and maybe a couple of stewards , and the seagulls walking around , but I WAS looking at the cameraman and the image I recall is him standing on his little balcony all alone, I didnt really count the guys wandering round or taking pictures

Looks like you could be right Pepe - according to the report in the Warrington Guardian the fire was started deliberately, from a cubicle in the women's toilets. Lucky that the HJ is a modern stadium.
